How does this work? Is it based on performances in a calendar year and the list is whittled down as the best players come to the fore? Or is it really irritating like the Premier League player of the year where everything is horribly delayed and goes to a player that peaked a number of months before the announcement?

It's based on the calendar year. The 30 man shortlist is picked by the organisers - nothing to do with UEFA/FIFA anymore - and then journalists get to pick their top three players. The winner is announced in December so you should avoid the issues you get with POTY - although many selections will probably be based on who won what back at the end of the season.

Him for Denmark and us are two different galaxies. Like Kane for England.

Eriksen's been outstanding for Denmark lately I believe. haven't seen all the games but listening to what others have said. and watching a couple of recent ones.

Buffon 4th. Is he better than De Gea who was 20th?

No surprise on the top three or Ronaldo winning.

They should of just given Ronaldo another one of these:

Ramos 6th and best defender. Just shows there's a dearth of decent centrebacks across world football.

Kane should be higher.

Lewandowski scores for fun at the best side in a one team league.

Mbappe and Neymar had incredible ends to last season but have spent the first half of this season at the best club in a second rate league.

Ramos has consistently let his side down with stupid sendings off.

Kane is a goal scoring machine with an amazing all round game, a leader on and off the pitch, who has consistently excelled in 2017 for club and country despite both that club and country being visibly handicapped compared to their rivals.

Who cares about that when it's a popularity contest. ;)

Luka, "Change of position helped me a lot in my career. I used to play more offensively.

"When I dropped back, I was able to read the game better and show my creativity. Harry Redknapp made that change."

The first women's Ballon d'Or award has sparked a sexism row after winner Ada Hegerberg was asked if she knew how to twerk.

Host Martin Solveig, a French DJ, made the comment as Hegerberg collected her prize for being named the world's best female footballer.

Hegerberg, 23, said "no" and walked away.

The comment sparked outrage on social media, with many users calling the remarks "sexist", and Solveig released an apology on Twitter shortly after.

"Sincere apologies to the one I may have offended," he said. "My point was: I don't invite women to twerk but dance on a Sinatra song. Watch the full sequence, people who have followed me for 20 years know how respectful I am especially with women."

He's a fucking moron. That was probably one of the biggest moments of this ladies career and he's ruined it for her by acting like a class A knob

Great for Modric, but it should have been Ronaldo or Messi again.

Remember Luka's first few games for us under Ramos and how he looked completely lost playing either from the left or a more CAM role. I remember too well the 0-1 at home to Hull where he had an absolute shocker. And from that he rose to become the most gifted player we may ever have had.
