We are delighted to announce that we have reached agreement with Newcastle United for the transfer of Sebastien Bassong to the Club, following the player successfully completing a medical examination and agreeing personal terms.

The defender moved to St James' Park in July 2008 from Metz where he made 79 appearances in three seasons.

The 23-year-old played 34 times for Newcastle last season in his debut campaign in the Premier League.

Bassong, a French U21 defender moved to United in July 2008 from Metz where he made 79 appearances.

After a short trial on Tyneside, which included playing in the pre-season game at Doncaster, Sebastien, a left-footed centre half/left back made his switch permanent.

He is a product of the renowned Clairefontaine youth academy in France which has an excellent record of producing top class footballers.

After an outstanding first season at St. James' Park, he was named Player of the Year.

No waiting around for the start of the Championship season then. Good to get him in, I have to say.

King/Corluka to start the season, and then see how it goes. I hope the boy can prove his worth for us and do the business.

Would have thought we would have waited until after the Newcastle game. Oh well. Good player, good signing and will think he has been brought in with a view to replace King, if, by the end of this season, he isn't the player he was/is.

well if we wait to get him after the newcastle game to serve out the ban then he will not start for us in the remaining friendly and would be thrown in at the deep end against Lpool.

Will be the first to admit, I've heard all the paper/fan talk about him. But is he actually that good?

As far as I saw, every player in a Newcastle shirt was abysmal last season.

    Did he actually stand out?

Good buy, and better off getting him in now then waiting until after the weekend.

Is this Ledley's long (short) term replacement?

Now if only we could get Diarra and Robben that would round out the transfer window.

I'm really surprised we didn't wait for him to serve out his ban with Newcastle.

EDIT: Anyone who isn't sure about the whole suspension thing, please see the hilarious Rupstoh rant in "Bassong-The Rupstoh Sketch " in Transfer Rumours. Warning, your sides may split...

This is a good signing i.m.o.
Seb. Bassong, unlike many of our players with 'potential', is good enough right now to start alongside one of our more experienced CB's.....but at the same time is still young enough to learn from them.
Him and Daws. could be our future.

Pleased with this buy, sensible bit of business with our talented, but fragile centre backs.

am i the only one confused by it and it's implications?

surely king-gate is our first choice. so what does it say about these two.

then daws is the obvious backup and should be seen to be knocking hard on the door.

also charlie can do the biz and has done effectively. not to mention chimbo and hudd.

so what does spending 8 mill on a new centre back say about the above?

Team vs Liverpool (assuming King isn't fit)

    Gomes
    Hutton, Corluka, Chimbonda, Assou-Ekotto
    Lennon, Palacios, Huddlestone, Modric
    Keane, Crouch

Subs = Cudicini, Naughton, Dervite, Jenas, O'Hara, Pavlyuchenko, Defoe

(ps - i always forget players as we have so many..but Keane and Crouch to score against former club? sounds good to me !!!)

Prob that King cant play too much, Dervitte really isnt what we hoped for, and we needed LB cover as well as Bale hasnt been up to it so far. In terms of Dawson, could mean he wants to be a certain EPL starter, as he in all fairness deserves...

I have a feeling that maybe it means Woody's injury might be a bit more serious than first thought, better not to rush him back so he gets fully healed.
  16. TheDutchMaster
Welcome aboard! I havent seen a lot of you, so I hope your as good, as everyone keeps saying!
  17. TheDutchMaster
I dont understand how some people see Leds and Wood as our 1st choice CB's? Obviously if they were both 100% fit and playing week in, week out it would be amazing! There is no doubting the quality of Leds but I believe we cant rely on him anymore! Woodgate again, quality defender but injury prone big time and I reckon his experience and positioning gets him through games! Corluka could be a decent CB but feel he needs someone with quality and experience next to him.. we'll see with Bassong!
  18. Shirtfront
Is that the team you would like, or the team you think he will put out? Because if it's the latter, I have a crisp £20 note that says Jenas and Defoe will play.

King will be "fit". (ie as fit as he gets).

Charlie can do a job there but Id say he was predominantly a RB, in which case is it not better to have competition at CB from an actual CB? Harry has gone on record in recent months saying that the squad needs depth and that players need to be fighting for a starting place.

Daws has "been knocking on the door" for the last 2 seasons, to the extent that I don't think he needs to do any more knocking. We now have 4 out-and-out CBs (as we have 4 strikers) - 2 with experience (Woody and King) and 2 who are very good and have lots of room for development (Bassong and Daws). Can only be a good thing, no?
