Defender on why he needs to leave.

Sebastien Bassong has outlined his reasons for quitting Newcastle in favour of a move to Tottenham.

Bassong is set to finalise an £8million move to Spurs after undergoing a medical in North London.

The 23-year-old, who only joined Newcastle last summer, insists he has little option but to quit St James' Park.

"Playing for Newcastle was a real honour in front of the supporters at St James' Park," he told the Evening Chronicle.

"It has been an unbelievable experience for me.

"But I have always said that I wanted to play in the Premier League and that wasn't possible with Newcastle.

"It was not good for my career to be at a Championship club. I want to play in future World Cups and African Cup of Nations competitions with Cameroon.

"That is made more difficult if you are not playing at the higher level."

mmmmm, nothing there about wanting to play for Spurs particularly, just that he didnt want to get stuck playing for a club outside the Premiership, which, although understandable, doesnt make him sound exactly thrilled to be joining us either. :-|

In fairness it is more about why he left Newcastle rather why he chose Spurs.

The quotes were from a paper in Newcastle. It's only natural they'd ask him questions specific to Newcastle. Don't read too much into it.

Crouchy lays it on heavy for Spurs on his arrival, and we say it was scripted. This guys tells us as it is, and we still ain't happy. Oh dear!

I actually like the fact that he does not slam the door behind him - as Bent has done it. It seems much more professional not to mention mature if you ask me.

Think he will be a great squad player for us.

I agree. From all the reports I have read he seems to have a good attitude, quite refreshing to see that in a footballer.

looks like we'll lose him when the ACN happens, which isn't ideal really.

Although I am happy for this signing, I can't help but feel a gutted that we've just paid £8m for a player that we wont see much of this year.

But hopefully King, Woody and Daws will be fit by then - we also have Charlie and Chimbo who can play there. Our league games in Jan are against Liverpool, Hull, Fulham and Birmingham which I shouldn't think would pose TOO much threat (Liverpool excluded) to the back 4 - and with all due respect.
