In many ways I prefer this version of the world championship.

The level of darts isn't quite so high but the matches are just as close and you dont get the whole Sky/Barry Hearn thing whipping up a frenzy that doesn't quite seem to fit darts.

I love seeing the c/as to the wives in their finest tom and the fact that you can hear the thud of the dart hitting a dart board because the crowd are knowledgeable and respect the thrower. Not hearing moronic football chants that have nothing to do with the action on the oche. Or the fights. And there were many fights at the Ally Pally.

This is real darts. Blokes that come from local pubs with a shot at the title.

Rocky with Arerrs.

Definitely worth a look if you haven't seen it yet.

Inspired by the PDC championships last week, we went out yesterday and bought a dart board....
The missus beat me 5-1 last night as I couldn't hit anything I needed at the end of a leg.

Get used to it lol
I started playing for a team again this week and it was exactly the same. Hence the saying, "Trebles for show, doubles for dough"

I hit a few treble 20's and the bull twice, but even hitting single 1 or 2 was a nightmare!
Need to figure out a half accurate throwing style and then practice a lot.
The only advice I can give is to try and keep your stance as solid as possible, keep movement to a minimum preferably just from the elbow to the hand on your throwing arm.

you should also try different weight & length of dart!

I'm winning this morning..... Think I have found some range and a way to throw more accurately.
Still taking me 30+ darts to get there though, but that's to be expected.

just got knocked out, needed about 10 darts at every double, the standard is pretty piss poor..
I've been thinking the same about the standard. One of my old team mates has just started plying for Essex and he's very close to this standard in my eyes.

I work with a guy who played county darts with Bob Anderson, i think for Surrey, thinks the BDO is a joke, i was willing Adams to get knocked out, Big fish mentality with Adams he wouldn't even make the top 25 in the PDC.

Exactly, the split elevated him from being an absolute nobody, to World No.1. he's been lucky that more often than not winning the BDO title has prompted players to head over the PDC.

As a local to Lakeside, I absolutely love this tournament and have been to many of them over the years. Semi final day is by far the best.

Unfortunately for this tournament, the 'best' players have gone over to the other side of darts where there is more money.

Another local lad, James Wade is doing pretty well, but all the big names started in the BDO tournament to begin with. Wadey still hits the locals, plays anyone and everyone - is a fucker though, will play on his knees from about 10 yards away and still beat you ;-)

Only issue I have with the BDO tournament is I find Bob Potter annoying as fuck, but I've had a good few drinks on him at these tournaments, drinks with the players, taking the piss out of them in the back room, whilst live on BBC, trying to beat them in the back room as they are warming up to play, never winning, but giving it the billy big spuds.

The venue is decent, there has never been any trouble, ever, the dutch fans are brilliant always up for a laugh.

Bit like the EPL and SPL then. All about the benjamins. I love lakeside as it was the first darts I ever watched. Has more of a pub feel about it rather than the superbowl effect of the PDC

I went to the knockout rounds at Lakeside in 2002 when Tony David won. It was total chaos. There was nearly a riot when they ran out of ketchup about after the first semi final. I got my ring stuck in Andy Fordham's hair. Martin Fitzmaurice warmed up the crowd every day by saying "Hello the Dutch" followed by 10 minutes of jokes about world war two. Ray Stubbs played air guitar on stage to "Rockin' All Over The World" by Status Quo. Those were the days.

If you think the men's standard is piss poor you should have seen the women back in 2002. Every leg lasted about 15 minutes whilst both players had 20-odd darts at double one.
