David Beckham will leave Real Madrid and join Major League Soccer side LA Galaxy at the end of the season.

The 31-year-old former England captain will sign a five-year deal, reportedly worth £128m.

Beckham told Reuters: "This week Real asked me to make a decision regarding their offer to extend my contract.

"After considering several options to stay in Madrid or join other major British and European teams, I have decided to join LA Galaxy." <!-- E SF -->

In a statement, Beckham continued: "I would like to thank the supporters and people of Madrid who have made my family and I feel so welcome in my time here, making this an extremely difficult decision to make.

"I have enjoyed my time in Spain enormously and I am extremely grateful to the club for giving me the opportunity to play for such a great team and their amazing fans.

"I am proud to have played for two of the biggest clubs in football and I look forward to the new challenge of growing the world's most popular game in a country that is as passionate about its sport as my own.

"For the rest of this season I will continue to give 100% to my coach, team-mates and fans as I believe Fabio Capello will bring this club and its supporters the success they truly deserve."

Beckham left Manchester United in July 2003 to sign for Real, who paid £25m for the midfielder's services.

However, in the three-and-a-half seasons since his arrival, the Spanish giants have failed to win any silverware.

This season has proved particularly disappointing for Beckham, who was dropped by England coach Steve McClaren and struggled to win a place in Real's first team.

LA Galaxy admitted their interest in signing Beckham in November, when general manager Alexi Lalas told the BBC Sport website of his admiration for the former England captain.

In an exclusive interview, Lalas said: "The Los Angeles Galaxy are looked upon as the jewel of Major League Soccer.

"We play in the best stadium we have had incredible success over the history of the league, we have had great individual players and great teams. There's a tradition of excellence.

"All of this leads to this race to become the first MLS super club, if you will.

"It is something we aspire to and in order to do that you have to have quality players, a direction and a passion, a good coach and you have to get credibility domestically and internationally.

"Signing players of Beckham's stature would be a wonderful step in the right direction not just for the Galaxy but for soccer in America."

Landon Donovan, Galaxy's star player, said Beckham's arrival would be a huge boost to MLS.

"I think it's hard to quantify what David Beckham being here would mean," he said.

    "Marketing-wise it's a dream come true and it's not a 35, 36-year-old washed-up guy.

"It's a guy who can still play and a guy who still has a lot of appeal, probably the most famous soccer player in the world."

And US national coach Bob Bradley added: "We have improved in so many ways during the 11 years of the league.

"But we are constantly trying to get more people to take notice and certainly bringing David Beckham to LA will push that part of it up the ladder." <!-- E BO -->

Must admit I'm glad he's not going to us...

Is it really possible that they're paying him £128m??? That's close to £500,000 a week. That's ridiculous.

That would blow away even the most lucrative contracts in American sports. Basketball players don't even make that much money.

incredible, im shocked that hes effectively said gd bye to his Eng career, gd luck to him i guess

    who cares........

I saw that too, and its absurd! I'm an American, and I can't even think of a contract in any sport thats worth half of what Beckham will be making.
  6. Hertspur
I know! I worked that out too and thought there must be something wrong with my calculator! Can't be true... can it??
  7. will8587
I believe the previous largest contract in MLS history was Freddy Adu, who was making $500,000 a year (£250k), which is somewhere around £5k a week.

relieved that we are not signing him. I've said it many times throughout his career and now i say it again... David Beckham is by far the luckiest man in world sport! Good luck to him, hopefully now that he is on a different continent all the Beckham farce of the past ten years will do away for good!

    128 million shome mistake shurely

At least that's one less rumour the club has to deny and we have to listen to. Good luck to him.

It's not about the money is it Becks! Cause the quality of football in the US is amazing - not!

Glad he didn't join us though. Apart from being past it, the greedy bugger would have bleed us dry!

surely his wages include any outside sponsership deals so his only income will be this wage from the club every bit of his endorsements will go to the club otherwise this has to be wrong or being paid for by roman !!!!!

    SuperStar

    A) Its not that much.

    B) The football and football money have nothing to do with it. He is looking for his career after football and that means LA -- NOT being a coach, but in TV and movies. Victoria has been angling for this for years.

    C) It WILL be good for USA football, although his name alone isn;t enough to make football a 'Top 4' sport in the States ... [ another 'Top 4' discussion ]

I think it is the right decision by him. He would never have the same success in England that he had at Man U, and instead he is headed for a new continent where he will be one of the greatest stars, who might help taking the sport to the next level overthere. So, he has the possibility of invigorating his career, becoming a bigger name in the US and retiring from the game with Hollywood in the backyard. Sound decision.

We know who wears the shorts in your house, right David. I can get a taaaaan all year round.
We could do with the money.

As soon as it was rumoured I said "He's going to america". Even if he took a pay cut he would go there, I think that's where I would go if I were him. If he can raise the profile of football in the land of the yanks then he would have pulled off one of the toughest tasks in the game.

Had to laugh at this quote
    "Marketing-wise it's a dream come true and it's not a 35, 36-year-old washed-up guy."

No, it's a 31 year old washed up guy. One with a serious attitude problem too. However given the level he'll be playing at, it should make him look good and as an Englishman I'd be interested in seeing him play
  17. NeverRed06
    victoria has brain washed him

she will have an album out in the next year and funny enough no one will buy it so he will end up back in england
