If he stays I hope eh sorts his attitude out. I think he's a bit overrated, but he can do a decent job for us on his day if his head is in the right place!

He has let himself down with recent form and alleged sulking.

However don't forget he made the Premier League team of the year in his debut season which is no mean feat.

So, overrated? Nah. Just recently under-performing.

What actual evidence is there that he has a bad attitude other than the lack of a big grin on his face. To me, bad attitude means berating team-mates, blaming others, bad mouthing and so on. Has he done any of that? Can't say I blame him for looking a bit pissed off with some of the teams we fielded (particularly under Sherwood when our fragile back 4 were offered no protection from MF). I'm very glad he wants to stay and hope he can become a cornerstone for the team. he made losing Ledley much easier to bear IMO.

Great news if he signs it ....if not still has 4 yrs left so cards all in DL's hands.
On his day a great defender that can play the ball.....got a sweet left foot ....in his first season ,him and bale down that left side was a joy ...specially against man poo at their place :)
Last season got injuried in pre season if I recall and was playing catch up then and well the whole team had some very poor performances by their standards .....yes managers can be blamed for that aswell ...but at the end of the day its the 11 players on that field that need to get it sorted.
Some shocking errors cost us dearly last season.

As for his bad att ....i think in several games his body lang just showed he didn't want to be out there or was thinking here we go again ( before the match had started ) ....and i can understand any player thinking that HOWEVER that's when you want leaders to kick them up the ass and where the players should pull together and stand up and be counted.
Last season we lacked that .......but its done with and a clean slate starts now.

with Jan following Hugo and signing a new deal I have a feeling its the new manager having an immediate effect on our so called star players. they can see his direction philosophy and attitude and its probably something they like.
im starting to get more optimistic.
wish I renewed by bronze membership now lol

I wish this was true but Jan hasn't even met him yet... I think it will definitely be the case in the future if the players are buying into his philosophy we will be vastly improved on last year...

I don’t think he has a bad attitude necessarily. I just have a problem with him not taking enough responsibility. For such an experienced and talented player, I expect to see him leading by example, whether that be with body language or the spoken word.

We conceded a lot of soft goals towards the end of the season and the amount of times we had 4 defenders just walking back into position without exchanging a word or a glance was frustrating.

I want to see questions being asked and the back four talking to each other. There is even a place for someone berating other players, within reason (think Roy Keane). What I have no time for, is the silent and defeated stroll back into position which appeared to be endemic in our back four, and embodied by Vertonghen.

Mentally speaking, I think he needs to grow some boll0cks. If he does, he’ll be a truly fantastic player.

Not the quickest and prone to a few bad errors of judgment here and there. So still overrated in my opinion...

Gets criticised for looking uphappy during the several thrashings we got last season. Makes sense. Personally, having seen our performances last season, his facial expressions display exactly what I was feeling, and how I'd hope the players would feel whilst being severely beaten.

Although of course, facial expressions don't really actually mean anything.. He just looks like that all the time

If the report is accurate, it's the second best piece of good news after the Lloris contract extension.

Which CB do you rate more highly and is available to a club or our size?

I'm not saying I'd replace him. I'm just saying that he's a bit overrated. Would live to see him prove me wrong though! I want him to be fucking brilliant!!

And his bad attitude? Where've you got that from? Or is it just based on his facial expressions?

To me a player saying 'Id like to stay' and has been offered a new deal but not actually signed it implies there is a hidden 'but' at the end of that comment.
Hidden but....mmmm lol.
But you're gonna ha e to make it worth my while.
Could be wrong. I'm a sceptic.

So you don't remember him sulking half of last season?! It's difficult not to think of you as some kind of moron. I'm bored now...

@Lufti / @bigspurs

Come on guys you both write some good posts, so chill out a little. No need to be personal?

None of us are experts at body language, and it can't be fun being a defender at any club when you are losing by the odd goal in six now can it?

Jan for me is first and foremost our third most important player behind Lloris and Eriksen and i think most of us would put them in that order if asked the same question.

So long as he puts in a shift, i don't really care if he smiles, grunts, or blows kisses. But let's not get too upset about it............................(y)
