The Sun saying he's about to sign a new four year contract.

Should go down well among our "supporters".

My two cents; Davies and Rose have been playing about 50% of the matches each in the last three seasons, and the welshman seems to have Pochs trust, even though he hasn't been as good this season as he was last year.

Good performance at the weekend and won a lot of 50/50 balls putting his head and body in when it counted. As others have said when he gets the chance of a run of games he always improves with time. Reliable servant and by all accounts happy with the rotation with Danny Rose. Not many players at his level would accept a squad role.

For those saying take Sessegnon now he made the same mistake as Davies did against Mane at the weekend. He is raw as hell and needs time before he is ready to play anywhere near our level. I'd be well up for bringing him in to mature with the under 18's/23's but he is no where near ready for the Premier League or Europe. With that in mind a new 4 year contract for Davies whilst we make moves for someone like Sessegnon to come in and develop would be a well thought out option.

Has signed a new contract until 2021.

I've been critical of him if I'm honest but I think the last game he played in showed that he very well may be a different player if he had a solid run in our team with his confidence improving. He's still quite a young guy too is he not?

Good. You won't find many better back up left backs in the PL who knows he's second choice when Rose is fit.

Not sure that's the point, though. He's a good fullback, but not a good wingback. We need a backup wingback.

He's fine there really. Personally I'd consider playing him on the left of the back 3 and putting Jan at wingback but then you lose Jan's pure excellence (unless he's tripping over himself) at CB. Whoever plays there will be back up to the best LB/LWB in the league so we can't be too fussy, especially if Poch continues to alternate between formations.

Davies is a decent enough back up for Rose and Verts. Probably not the best wing back but that is something he can work on.
He is fully integrated in the squad and seems to be happy to be Rose's deputy.
I am not his biggest fan but fairly happy that he gets a new contract.

Vertonghen would hate that, even though he's good at it.

I like Davies, think he's a good player who can just look below standard because rose and Walker are 2 of the finest on Europe.
Glad he's committed, just needs to stop faking with his hair at important moments

Great news, very dependable player and great professional. Nice lad too from all accounts.

One roasting from Mane when completely unprotected in a game where the whole team were shocking does not make Davies a poor player.

If we're going to stay 3-4-3 I'd still like a more dynamic understudy for Rose.

We know that signing a new contract doesn't guarantee your long term future here, it's more Levy protecting their monetary value.

Yup.

Don't get the negativity about him TBH.
He's 23 YO, so plenty of room for improvement. He rarely gets a proper run in the team. He's versatile...Poch likes that. He's the back-up. We couldn't afford someone as good as Danny Rose*, and if we could he would expect to play or he would leave. If he is so terrible, why are Chelsea supposedly sniffing around?

*If such a player exists...many consider Rose to be the best LB in the country.

This is probably a big part of it. He slots in when Rose is out. He isn't Rose, he isn't as good as Rose, it is hugely unlikely that we could ever get back up that would be better than Rose. If we replaced him (internally or externally) with someone better than Rose, fine - we support THFC not Ben Davies FC. But it is hardly a priority or even something to see as a negative at this stage IMHO.

And I agree, think he is quite decent really. How many folks on here were slagging Danny Rose off when he was 23 YO? Doubt many of them thought DR had the improvement in him that he has shown (fortunately, I wasn't one of them :) )?

Ben Davies biggest problem is he lacks pace which isn't a major issue unless you play for Poch as the demands he puts on his full backs is insane. Poch wants them to be leading the attacks but the problem with that is if you lack the pace to get back you are only one slight mistake from looking like a twat.

How many times have we seen walker or rose get back and redeem themselves for being out of position or giving the ball away?

Still a pretty decent backup but also put back up full backs play fairly often so he needs to be better than decent really.

I generally run hot and cold on Davies, but considering his age, versatility, and our less-than-perfect record on transfers recently, I'm happy to see him sign this extension. He is like a lot of young players, in that his confidence seems to fluctuate wildly, even within games. You saw the same thing from Danny Rose during the AVB days, and look how much he improved. It's not a given that Davies will gain a little more nerve, and even if he does, I can't imagine him ever being as good as Rose, but it's reassuring to view his mistakes in veins that allow for improvement in the future.

I think he's a very useful member of the squad. I'd like to see us bring in a young left back who can really bomb forward to give us that option if Rose is out, but as you say Davies offers cover in two positions and I think is good at both.

Pleased he has signed a new contract, a very good squad player who would probably be first choice LB at most clubs.

Too be honest, he's coming into his own now he's had a bit of a run in the team, people are being a bit over the top about how he isn't good enough to play wing back. He's actually got a pretty decent cross on him, he's very athletic, and gets up and down the wing very well.

It's a big ask to step into the team and suddenly perform when the first choice player gets injured half way through the season, especially someone of the calibre of Rose.

He's a great rotation player of you ask me. We have the best set of wing backs in the league in Rose, Walker, Trippier, and Davies.

The new contract is great news.

But that's my point. If you're thinking about swapping Verts and Davies then doesn't that suggest we need a better wingback for cover? I'm not saying sell Davies, but we need a backup wingback.

Probably not the best wing back but that is something he can work on. If Poch believes in him and can work with him, then I am okay that he got a new contract. But as someone else said, he is fully integrated in the squad and seems to be happy to be Rose's deputy.
