Ben Davies biggest problem is he lacks pace which isn't a major issue unless you play for Poch as the demands he puts on his full backs is insane. Poch wants them to be leading the attacks but the problem with that is if you lack the pace to get back you are only one slight mistake from looking like a twat.

How many times have we seen walker or rose get back and redeem themselves for being out of position or giving the ball away?

Still a pretty decent backup but also put back up full backs play fairly often so he needs to be better than decent really.

Seems to happen less with 3 at the back (which is one of the things I like most about the system). The 3 CBs are less stretched and the wing backs can take a few more risks going forwards.

He's fine there really. Personally I'd consider playing him on the left of the back 3 and putting Jan at wingback but then you lose Jan's pure excellence (unless he's tripping over himself) at CB. Whoever plays there will be back up to the best LB/LWB in the league so we can't be too fussy, especially if Poch continues to alternate between formations.
The benefit of having Davies is that we are sure to see Vertonghen go on more of those driving runs, as Davies has the knowledge to fill into that position, whereas Rose would probably stay up top and offer support. We get the best of both worlds I think.

But that's my point. If you're thinking about swapping Verts and Davies then doesn't that suggest we need a better wingback for cover? I'm not saying sell Davies, but we need a backup wingback.

I don't really agree. My point about swapping them is as much to do with Davies being comfortable in a back 3 as it is about Jan being excellent going forward. I don't think we can just buy a back up left wing back when we already have Rose, Vertonghen, Davies and Wimmer who are all left sided defenders and can do the job there. I think Davies does ok there personally. He's not a worldy, but he isn't expected to be seeing as he's a back up. I'd rather promote a youngster once in a while if needed rather than go out and sign someone in an already well covered position. Obviously if he gets injured, we're fucked, but that would be the case anywhere on the pitch if our first choice and back up got injured.

I know there's a massive difference to our style and quality when Rose plays instead of Davies but I have to say I'm ok with Davies, except for when he brushes his hair literally whilst trying to defend a shot.

Great news, solid squad member, great to keep this young side together as much as possible.
Think this is a serious contract extension (ie. not just to add value to an assest) since Poch is wearing a pretty nice sweater, and he just doesnt do that for schmuck.

Got a feeling he's worth keeping if we are staying with 3 at the back because he can play 2 positions in the system.

Also so it probably means we won't be buying another left back in the summer.

"It's a fantastic club to be part of at the moment and you can only see it getting better," the Welshman said.

"If you'd have said this before the start of my career I would probably have been in shock, I wouldn't have believed it."

Love the attitude. He's obviously not a big time Charlie with comments like that and it's a reminder of how young he is (seasoned pro's dont often come out with that kind of stuff) and has lots of time to get even better.

If Pochettino did not think that Davies had the ability to play well in a number of different positions and formations, then Davies wouldn't be sat next to him signing a renewal. Pochettino prizes flexibility and the ability to be able to provide whatever the team demands over pretty much everything else. Eriksen can play in a front 3, a front 4 and, against the right opposition, a CM2. Alli is a midfielder who is currently operating as a second striker. Eric Dier is echoing the early career of Gary Mabbutt when it comes to taking on different positions across the defence. And that's why Davies is so valuable. He can play LCB in a three-man defence, LB in a flat-back four and, again, against the right opposition, LWB in a 3-4-3.

And if you don't think Davies is flexible and I'm pushing it a bit, then take a look at the photo on the Official Site. Rather than ruin the symmetry of the all-important Poch pose, our left back is signing his contract with his right hand. If he goes with his left, then he cuts across Poch, resplendent in his suit and tie combo, and that would never do. So he goes with his right and provides perfect balance to the composition in much the same way as his role is to provide balance in the team's formation. Now there's a young player who knows how to accommodate the needs of the manager and the team.

Well done, Ben.

Reckon Poch is eyeing him for the LWB role as backup to Verts, don't think Wimmer will stick around personally.

Didn't realise he's only 23 years old. As people above have said good back up for Rose. COYS.

As long as he's been here, him and Rose have generally played 50% of the games each, and Poch quite obviously trusts him. At times, Davies have been the better of the two, while Rose obviously now have taken it to a whole other level.

And as I mentioned earlier in the thread, he's now at the same age Rose were when he signed his new deal before the 14/15 season, so let's just see if he can improve. He had a better season last year than he has had so far this season, but there should be no reason why he shouldn't be able to kick on.

Wimmer is off.

That's what this says.

I still think we will buy a LWB with more athleticism and offensive potential. Wimmer will be off and we will replace him with more game time for CCV.

Davies will step in very well for Rose initially more or less depending on how well the new LWB settles in and then will also provide Vertonghen depth IMO.

Or maybe I know nothing and he'll start for us in 40 matches next year as we win the treble and he snags the Golden Boot, the Ballon d'Or, and PL POTY.

I agree. Especially if we stick to the back 3, having Dier, Toby, Vert, Davies, CCV, Wanyama (if need be) as options is not too shabby. It would allow us to go all out for Sessegnon and slowly get him used to playing in a poch team.

Doesn't sound like you support him at all tbh.

What better back up could we sign and who has a better back up than him in the EPL?

Spot on assessment, i am though most surprised Poch hasn't looked around at Barca or Madrid for a back up left back to Rose to be honest..........:cautious:

If we're going to stay 3-4-3 I'd still like a more dynamic understudy for Rose.

We know that signing a new contract doesn't guarantee your long term future here, it's more Levy protecting their monetary value.

Name us one, just one (so that shouldn't be too hard). One who would willingly sit on the bench for say, thirty odd games each season? That "more dynamic" player that would look up and think that he would become first team choice at left back anytime in the next ten seasons. One who would play for a club as a sub that has won sod all since Leo Sayer was at number one in the vinyl record charts?

Easy peasy.

If Poch thought there was one out there Davies would be shipped out to Hull Tigers to join our retirement home for Spursy players.

We are very lucky that the player wants to stay with us, and those thinking he's not good enough are living in cloud cuckoo land, or are on weed, or both.
