Our interest in Pavard and De Ligt, with their specific conditions, suggest to me that we are resigned to losing or replacing a centre back next year. If we can arrange a deal for either I’d be happy.

Wouldn't they be replacing Toby this season (if he leaves)?
It could also just be somewhat long term planning for Vertonghen's replacement, he's 31 and footballers all age/decline at different rates. It wouldn't hurt to get someone in to cover if Jan's decline happens sooner rather than later.

He’s had a great World Cup all in all, scored a blinding goal against Argentina and been pretty solid throughout (today aside). If Toby goes I’d feel a lot happier with him in the squad than relying on Foyth to suddenly be ready. Can’t judge him on current match alone, he helped get France to the final

Thought I'd watch him as itk is linking him with us. Not impressed so far. Have no idea why we would be linked with him
Not impressed by his performance in the final.
Im not convinced Pavard is the solution if toby goes

Basing your opinion of him off one match (hell, not even a full match yet) is just downright silly. He was excellent for Stuttgart last season and has had a great WC up until this point.

Through ITK and club statements, neither Ajax or Stuttgart are in favour of a transfer this summer. We’ll have to move swiftly if Alderweireld does go but think there is one eye on Vertonghen too.

Croatia targeted him because right back was the obvious weak point in France's unbalanced formation. On the left they had Matuidi tracking back and often acting as almost an auxiliary left back, whereas on the right Mbappe was playing off the shoulder of the Croatian defense trying to quickly get in behind when France won possession. Pavard was completely isolated.

It's like when loads of Spurs fans thought Danny Rose was shit when Sherwood's tactical naivete left him utterly exposed in match after match after match. You have to put a defender's performance in its appropriate tactical context.

Absurd to judge a player off of one match, anyway.

I know. But it also seems rather silly to rate him as a straight replacement for toby based on a few WC matches.

The guy was one of the top young CBs in Germany this year...hence why such a young player got picked in a stacked France team and was a starter for the winners playing out of position.

Aymeric Laport has been a big name as a promising player for awhile now and last winter Manchester City spent a lot of cash buying him, yet he was left out and Pavard was selected ahead of him.

Not many are judging him off of the World Cup games especially when there’s so much to see him playing in his actual position at CB.
