David Bentley has been fined a maximum of two weeks' wages by Tottenham Hotspur after he was charged with drink driving yesterday.

The midfield player was involved in a collision with a lamp post in the early hours of yesterday morning. He was arrested and taken to Hatfield police station and was bailed to return to St Albans Magistrates Court on August 28 – the day after his 25th birthday.

Harry Redknapp, the Tottenham manager, has moved swiftly to punish him and reiterated that he would not tolerate bad behaviour from his players.

“I’m very anti-drinking in the first place, and I’m very, very anti-drink driving, there is no place for it," Redknapp said. "David is very lucky someone wasn’t injured in the accident, so in a way he has got off quite lightly.

i dont think i would be fined two weeks wages for this offense.. i would simple be sacked... whether anyone was killed or hurt is irrelevant!!

time to grow up... makes you wonder what happened that night someone walked up and punched him in the face... was he, as he was made out, the innocent party?

I agree he should be sacked, he has brought shame on the club, he acted irresponsibly and without any consideration for other road users or pedestrians. I think he is a bloody idiot who doesnt deserve to be a great club like ours.

Dont be too hard on the lad. He is lucky it was not worse but maybe this will be a wake-up call for him and might bring a little humility. Get your head down lad, work hard and show some character and make sure this is the low point of your slide over the past year or so. Too much talent to go to waste. Besides everyone deserves a second chance.

Yeah, he's obviously a total gizzard but I can't really see how this reflects badly on the club.

Would have been a hell of a lot worse if he'd made it wherever he was going and got in his car to go home .

there not going to sack him are they! thats mental, the guy cost us 15-16m levy will not just write that off, the guys a ball bag yes but lets give him the opportunity to prove all of us wrong and try and get into the 1st team

bentley has made a prat of himself and the club, but i think redknapp will use this to try and get a positive reaction from him. no doubt bentley will be trying his utmost to impress after this

Should Ledley King also be sacked for attacking a bouncer outside that bar? Would people be asking for Defoe or Modric to be sacked if they were arrested for a similar offense?? Let's look at this in real terms...Bentley has massivly underperformed and maybe his personal life is the reason (back in Ldn, out with his mates.)

Currently his stock could not get any lower. If we sell him now we would be lucky to get 5mm... teams will try and have our pants down. Maybe this is the wake up call... let him get his head down and see if he can get to where he needs to be. If not flog him in Jan or next summer when this will have passed.

I think he deserves a last chance

Yeah, definitely deserves a second chance. I have a sneaking suspicion that we will see a very different man/player this season.

Hearing this in contrast to certain itk reports that he was improving in training clearly doesn't add up to anything that is on a par with the sort of lifestyle you'd expect from players these days, but it still occurs clearly.

Question is: Has Bentley done this out of sheer stupidity (he is still a young and naive man - as most footballers are), or is he at odds with himself still?

I favour the latter, I would have thought that with an England spot up for grabs at the World Cup next year he would knuckle down - but if he doesn't do that soon....

..then he should be shown the door.

tcyrus... if i was caught drink driving and lost my license then i would have no job as i require a clean license to do my job!

yes i would be sacked... i also earn less than he does in a week per annum and yet I am able to rustle together the cash to get a taxi once i have had a few pints...!!!

what he did and any other person... footballer or not... did is selfish and inconsiderate!! please do not try and condone anyone who drinks and drives coz quite simple your wrong!!

I think people are being fairly harsh on Bentley. I'm no fan of his, and think he has turned out to be a terrible signing, but he deserves and probably needs a second chance now. And of course, he's going to get it because his contract is valuable to the club and Harry isn't the sort of manager to throw one of his players under the bus in this situation.

Lee Hughes made the same decisions and mistake that Bentley did and ended up killing a fella. He did 3 years in prison. After doing his time, Oldham gave him a chance to resurrect his career. I don't know what type of character Lee Hughes is, but he looks genuinely beat up by that event and has to live with it for the rest of his life. That's no consolation to the family of the guy he killed, but Hughes did his time and should get on with life. Oldham deserve credit for giving him a chance to play again, when moralists, like some commenters here, were jumping all over them at the time.

Bentley is very lucky he's not in Lee Hughes' situation. In fact, he could do worse than contact Hughes. He'll get another chance at Spurs, and it should be his last. I hope he bouces back now and sheds the cocky cockney schtick and just gets on with it.
