Best combination of AMs

I think there is a continuum that needs to be applied for the players as to strengths

Dribbling/Shooting/Pace <----Son----Lucas----Lamela----Eriksen---->Passing/Playmaking/Chance creation for others

Obviously Eriksen excels at shooting as well and is no slouch in the running department and Lucas definitely has an eye for a pass and a through ball, but I think it helps to have a framework in mind for the situations they would excel in

Borrowing this from another thread, because I think it makes a great observation of the various skill sets - I think it makes for an interesting discussion - What is your best combination of AMs to play behind Kane? (assume 4231)

Dele is not included in the continuum above - but he has a somewhat unique skill set.

For me, the key is getting the right balance, of creativity, off-the-ball movement and goal scoring.

Creativity - Eriksen or Lamela - both are pass first, shoot later type players. Eriksen has a bit more goals in him, because he seems to have more confidence in taking shots from outside the box. My best combination would have 1, but not both - and I think Eriksen offers a little bit more than Lamela in terms of all around game.

Goal Scoring - Son, Dele, Lucas - I would take two of these players to play along side the "creator". They are each a little different though. Son is the most direct - he doesn't really dribble well, but he has a direct approach, and his first thought on the ball is to run at defenders. Lucas is less direct than Son, in that he can dance around a bit looking for space for a pass or a dribble. He is the best dribbler of the bunch, and can create space as defenders collapse on him. Dele, to me, is still the smartest footballer we have. He instinctively makes great runs, and finds himself on the ball in good places. But, I think he needs to play with a creative partner - who can find him when Dele makes his runs from deep.

I don't think there is a bad combination if you play 1 of Eriksen/Lamela and 2 of Son/Dele/Lucas. If you play Eriksen and Lamela together - I think we leave too many goals on the bench. In the past, that was not really a bad option - but given the emergence of Son, and now Lucas, I think we should have another goal-scorer in the lineup.

My preferred line-up:

Dele - Eriksen - Lucas

I think Lucas will create gaps in the defense with his dribbling, and Dele and Kane will be able to exploit those spaces. I like Eriksen orchestrating play, but would not fret if it was Lamela. And, in any given match, I would happily swap out Son for either Dele or Lucas.

But, the more I think about this - the less I am sure we need to spend money upgrading AMs this summer - Malcom and Sessegnon interest notwithstanding. This group, as long as they stay healthy, seems to offer a plethora of options both starting and off the bench.

I got lost when you said Dele isn't included and then included him.

In my defence I did skim read it.

It only felt like 5 minutes ago we didnt have enough attacking options to mix it up a little bit. How times change very quickly. :)

For me Eriksen starts, it is great having Lamela coming back into the team, Lucas looks interesting and like a good signing, Dele is Dele and adds the degree of unpredictability to the game and Son is well on form.

In all, I'm going to sit on the fence and say I don't know. I could moan when Poch clearly gets it wrong tomorrow and should have played <player 1> instead of <player 2>.

Where is Sissoko in all of this?

I try and remind everybody that it is a squad game these days so I dont think you can pick an optimum line up; it depends on who we are playing

Against top sides who also win games can be very different line up than say a good Prem side and a containing side. The combination changes again when you Euro games and have to add the home and away line ups to the equation.

Some sides are good for say 70 minutes before they tire so first the line up needs to match the energy and then to impose a more sophisticated approach on them ( imo Dortmund being a classic example of a good side that could not maintain their approach for 90 minutes.

Currently we are strengthening the side but we need an understudy to Kane ( I know not AM ) but currently if we bring on a Llorente or Janssen s different combination and type of player needed.

Sorry it does not name names

This is how I would go for tomorrow’s game vs Huddersfield, do we really need 2 dms for games like this?

Bus parkers? Then Lamela has to be in there for me at the expense of God only knows. If I was to chose one it would be Dele as he does seem (to me) to lose the ball alot in tight situations and needs space to do his thing, but then what do I know?. Now for the neg rates

When Lucas was on with Son it felt like it had freed a whole load of space for Son to run into.

Lamela has the least offensive end product for me. His main strength is his work rate, pressing, and tactical fouling, which we did miss when he was out injured. He is really great at finding space between the lines, but then is not decisive enough to drive at the defence. I'd love to see him turn and drive straight at the heart of their defence and either slip a pass or unload a shot. But instead he dilly dallies and nearly always gets tackled from behind. He needs to have more hunger to score goals. He did it at Roma, but whenever he gets near the last third for us he seems to lack any kind of decisive / killer instinct.

I like this! Pure out and out attacking! I agree that this should be played againat Huddersfield tomorrow, if Verts isn’t fit then play Dier CB with Dembele or Wanyama in the CDM role! Really think we could tear them apart with this.

I agree with most of what you say regarding lamela but to be fair to him his through balls are his main strength.
He needs to be more of a goal threat to be a 1st choice imo

He literally does this :ROFLMAO:

He doesn’t, he slows down and rolls the ball with his instep whilst trying to give the defender ‘the eyes’ ... meanwhile another defender recovers to tackle him from behind.

Compare Lamelas goals and assists with Eriksen/Son/Dele and you’ll see he’s by far the least effective in the last third.
