2006 was better, but it's been decent

Up until the round of 16 it was in my opinion the best world cup ever... plenty of surprises and great to see some of the unknown quantities stick it to the big boys. Since then it has gotten progressively worse, cynical and predictable - and now I am at the point where I agree that 2006 was better.

See that's it, for me Mexico '86 with campos and his multi coloured kit, maradona, Hugo Sanchez, the Azteca stadium and all these players who most of us had never seen play etc was by far the most eye catching tournament I've witnessed....oh, and England actually done alright which was a bonus!
From an England fans perspective I just don't see how a tournament can be good when your national team doesn't actually perform, I don't remember anything about 94 or 2010!
Campos' multi-coloured kit was USA '94 as, for me anyway, was Carlos Valderrama and his amazing hair.

I've really enjoyed this World Cup so far - hopefully the semis and final can pick it up again.

One on the best international tournaments I've seen. Euro 96 was the first comp I can remember watching (i would have been about 10). Certainly the group stages were great, lots of upsets and tons of goals. I'd agree that the knock-outs have have been disappointing, especially normal time, buts there's been lots of late drama in ET (if you can stay awake to see it...).

Cheating has always been a part of the World Cup, but this year it's been less dastardly and more cowardly. Where it might've been the hand of god, or a dig in the kidneys in previous years, now it's the work of the "victim" that's getting the highlights - imo, IT IS NOT a foul if someone kicks your heel as you both tangle for the ball and it's not enough to make you fall over. MAKE you. If it is a faint tap to the ankle then the player has not been impeded and therefore it was NOT A FOUL. Its players themselves choosing to fall over that halts their progress and that's nothing to do with the oppo.

If we're going to stamp on diving and trying to win by being a pussy, we need to highlight it on this stage. Here and the Euro's (to some extent) are the only real places that the governing bodies have the chance to make a difference in front of everyone, but instead we see the usual suspects tumbling around, making themselves look softer-than-shite, pathetic individuals who are unable to withstand any form of contact at all, yet are still worshipped.

Sense. This makes none.

The group stages were great to be fair. I thought we were on course for a fantastic WC. The knock out stage thus far has disappointed - bar the Belgium/USA game which was one of the best of the lot.

I just don't understand why they couldn't of put the four quarter finals all on at 9 in the evening, spread out over Thursday/Friday/Saturday/Sunday...as opposed four of them crammed into two days...where the heat in the earlier kick offs slows the play.

They could of still spread it out enough to ensure enough time for rest until semis.

yup.. some of the so called smaller games were fantastic.. I think Ecuador vs Honduras makes it into my top ten of most entertaining matches ever.. although there were a large number of empty bottles the next morning.. :cyclops:

I can't remember most games an hour after watching them so I certainly can't remember whether this tournament was better than one in 1970 for example! I was 16 in 82' and was in awe of the Brazilians. You didn't have TV access to them like today. Out of their 22 man squad only 2 played outside Brazil. For me the greatest Brazilian I saw playing was their captain in 82 - Socrates.

So for me 82 was the best tournament, purely because of the greatest Brazilian side I've been fortunate to see. It really does sadden me to see what the current Brazilian side has become. And I do wonder if that's because so many of them play in Europe now compared to the Brazilian sides of the past.

Probably has something to do with the fact that clubs want players back for pre-season by a certain point...

In fairness to the pundits the atmosphere in Brazil has been amazing, so i hear, so part of their WC experience is the vibe in the country it's being played in, as well as the games themselves.

first wc i saw was 1990 and i thought it was boring tbh. Ditto 94 and 2010. Have enjoyed this wc so far but for me France 98 was the most enjoyable and dramatic

Taking aside the round of 8, I gotta agree with the general sentiment that this has been a pretty awesome world cup. The group stage was a lot of fun and the round of 16 was one of the most dramatic and intense I have ever seen. If the semis are able to live to expectations, then this might end up being the greatest World Cup ever (though my first world cup was USA 94, so I really can't speak of the ones before that one).

I think it's been great. I can't speak about best ever but definitely the best I can remember. Even the matches that have gone to extra time, there have been many missed chances or great goalie performances to facilitate that, it's not as if we've been watching bore draws. Tim Howard and Navas performances, Van Persie's miss, Greece hitting the crossbar several times, last minute equalisers, I think it's all be thoroughly unpredictable and entertaining. I'd agree that there hasn't been a stand out team as such, but there have been standout performers dragging their teams forwards. Messi, Neymar till his injury, Rodriguez, Robben, there's a lot that's memorable about this world cup for me anyway.

It's not really been annoying me, I think the groups and second round were pretty entertaining. I think the best thing about this WC has been Spain going out and nobody looking like walking it. I mean on paper the Germans should beat Brazil but i certainly wouldn't put any money on it.

It's no where near as annoying as all the fake positives types last time around going on at anybody who slated the South African WC. It was shit, only a a handful of decent games and they kept telling us to stop moaning as we had football so regularly so why complain. Well, because it's shit to watch perhaps?

1986 was the first world cup I really remember (I was 9 at the time).

1990 was my favourite in terms of England getting to the Semi's, although in all truth, most games were quite boring.

Enjoyed USA 94, made easier that I could enjoy the football without England pain.

The rest since then have just been frustrating as fuck, as an England fan.

This world cup, I've enjoyed apart from England - probably the best world cup in a while, certainly since 86/90.

I hate Spain's tica taca style of football - whilst brilliantly done, it's boring as fuck to me, I'd rather watch up and down, mistakes, kicking, passion etc etc all day long.

And even those games that have gone into extra time, some of those have been enthralling games - Germany, USA, Holland games for example.

I suspect the Semi's will also be cagey, seperated by only a goal too, and I'm looking forward to the 4 powerhouses of international football going against each other, certainly the 4 best teams in the semi's in my opinion.

I would just like to this moment at half time to comment on what a boring, uneventful, predictable World Cup this is.
