Tom Huddlestone did not disagree with the suggestion that he played his best game for us yet in Tuesday's meeting with Middlesbrough at the Lane.

source - official site

The naturally modest midfielder did not commit himself either way, but it was certainly a fine display at the Lane with the England Under-21 international the dominant figure in the centre - also more than doing his bit when the team were in retreat and pushing forward.

"I don't know, but after not playing the last game I felt I had something to prove," reasoned Tom to the question of whether it was his best game in our colours. "We won the game here and hopefully I contributed to that.

"With them playing a three in midfield you have to be more energetic and I think me and Didier played well together. Then there was three, stroke five at the back and that can be difficult and the final ball has to be spot on. That wasn't always the case, but we got the three points and after the derby game that was the important thing."

It was a deflating moment for the side when Robert Huth smashed home an equaliser to Dimitar Berbatov's strike, but Tom believes himself and his teammates showed what they are made of to push on and win the game.

"It was gutting for the lads, but bouncing back and showing the character to win shows the belief we've got in each other. The weekend hurt and we had a point to prove to ourselves, the manager and especially the supporters who always support us in such numbers."

hoddlestone is gonna b HUGE time for his run in the team BMJ
2. Breezer
Hudds is Quality and should ALWAYS play in the middle along side Jenas or Zokora depending on form!

Malbranque Jenas Hudds Lennon

Definately good enough to be a top 5 team with that midfield!
3. swedespur
The Hud has the potential to become just as good as Carrick, or even better. He´s not there yet. But at the moment he gets exactly the right amount of first team action.

It's about time we gave someone a jolly good thrashing

We've got to start improving our goal tally.

It would be sooo nice to get 4 or 5 against charlton.

Read will be Oliver Reed come saturday night

The Huddle

I agree, Tom seems to have a cool head for such a young player. He looks very composed and think Spurs have done well when he plays.

The Huddle is the new Hoddle.

I reckon over the next few years, he could be the new Jason Dozzell....!

Lets hope so :)

i have always said the hudd should start, mark my words he will be better than carrick and he will be a spurs great
8. Mullers
Jason Dozzell??? Lets hope not. He was a terrible player when he played for us.
9. Shirtfront
Huddle. Brilliant. Best of his (far too many) nicknames.
10. Bulletspur
I will give you the benefit of the doubt that you are taking the piss.
11. jackhealy
He's already better at free kicks than Carrick. He'll be as good as Carrick at a younger age.

Hudds is class but as someone else said he is not quite there yet and nor should we expect him to be at 19. The role he plays requires so much more than a striker or centre back, he needs not just touch, vision and great technique but also the ability to defend and tackle. For me he is best played at home when we monopolise the ball and he has more time, for away games a pairing out of ghaly (who I think is a very good player), zokora (who could be a great attacking/box to box player but not such a great holding player) and jenas (who is our best athlete and consistent performer) and tt, who despite his critics is just what you need in tough games.

We have enough variety to compete we just need to address that away form..........

must be taking the piss.:duh:

huddlestone will be a legend,no doubt.really annoys me when he gets dropped.very hard to compare him directly with any former players(the carrick comparison is odd because hudd seems to have much more to his game defensively) but vieira is closest i can think

I’ve been what you call a lurker for the last few months, spending ever-increasing amounts of time reading the threads on the front page. Now that I’ve finally registered I’ll try to contribute some thoughts now and then. Can’t work out quite where to post now but am happy to add to a thread in praise of Tom Huddlestone – as soon as it was clear in the summer that Carrick was on his bike I was convinced that we should build our midfield around his vast potential.
It’s a big day for me and my three children tomorrow – we’ll be at the Charlton game. When I was a kid I lived in Hertfordshire and went to every home game. Until my thirties I lived in North London and could go to the Lane regularly. Now we have to pick our games pretty carefully – at £110 quid for the four of us, plus the trip from Oxford we can’t afford to do it as often as we’d all like, and I feel like I’m betraying them the times I go alone. More important still, my brother is bringing his seven-year-old son to his first-ever Spurs game tomorrow, passing the torch as I did to my two daughters and my son, and as my Dad did to me when I was seven and he raised me on his shoulders to see the last ten minutes of a game against Chelsea in 1962. Let’s hope all the children go home smiling.

Good post. Heartfelt. Post more. Enjoy your day at the Lane.

Much as I think Huddlestone is incredibly talented and is the future of Spurs (if we can hang onto him), I have to disagree with that.

The Spurs player who reminds me of Vieira is Zokora (when he gets his attitude right). The bite, the rumbling runs forward, 50m toward goal with scarcely a diversion from his objective. The tackling (ouch).

But more importantly, how can you possibly say that Huddlestone at 19 is better defensively than Carrick last year at 24? One of Carrick's great skills is his defensive positioning, stifling opposition attacks by knowing where to stand and diverting the opposing team into less promising alleyways. And if they try to go through him, he often nicks the ball.

Huddlestone has many good qualities and is mature for his age, but his positioning is the weakest aspect of his game (that and his tendency to pass to the opposition when he isn't concentrating). There have been numerous occasions when we've been caught out and I thought, in the back of my mind, "that wouldn't have happened if we'd still had Carrick".

Hudd will be a sensational player in a couple of years and I think we should be playing him frequently, mistakes and all, to develop his ability for the long term, but saying he's defensively better than Carrick is just not true. Have a look at Man U's goals-against record this year. Same defence as last year. But now they have Carrick.

HUD v HOD

I was somewhat dissapointed not to see Huddlestone
against the goons last weekend..
The ability he has at such a young age needs to be nurtered in the right way, itt's also important to play him in big games
in order to gain experience.

He does have qualities that hoddle doesn't have mind,
He can tackle better, better defensive awareness, can
play centre back, good headerer. In the other departments
he has a bit of catching up to do,but then who doesn't.

What a prospect, can't wait to see defensive splitting
through balls, superb free kicks and long passes with
curl and spin on a plate.
19. rouser
Hoddle-stone has the potential to have as big an impact at Spurs as his namesake. He is the kind of midfield anchor man that every team needs, and his awareness & vision is quality.

BUT HE AIN'T the second coming & he AIN'T the next Jason Dozzell either.

That'll come as a shock to some of you guys!
