"Big Game" Players & Mentality

Does anyone else get more worried about us playing smaller teams than the big sides?

I keep saying to all of my mates, our players have "big game" mentalities.

Our stars have no problem being up for the big games, putting on a show and giving 100% but it's not translating to the other games which are just as important.

Why is it and what is the answer? Is it a simple lack of experience of being in such a big competition in the Champs League and competing for 4th?

Yes. When they have something to prove they 'raise' their game. When they play teams they should be beating they seem to relax too much.

I think its just inexperience and the classic mistake of being dazzled by the big time.

Still, maybe failure to get CL this year will boot them up the arse and make them realise where they went wrong this season.

I think not getting CL for next year may be a blessing in disguise. We might just see ourselves overtake the scum next year if we sign a decent striker in the summer. I'll settle for that.

We aren'r overtaking Arsenal anytime soon I'm afraid...and frankly I don't care about doing that anyway. I want us back in the CL and steadily finishing in the top four, if that means we have to still finish below the scum then so be it.

If we can keep all our best players and view Europa League as a run out for our fringe players I would agree with you.

How is that gonna be a blessing in disguise...? Our players have just had a taste of CL footy and could be tempted away by a far bigger club if they come knocking in the summer. Also what right minded top notch striker would want to come and join a club who don't a. Pay top wages )£100k+) or b. Can only offer Europa league footy.

City have been absolute fucking garbage since Xmas yet we are gift wrapping them a CL spot next season. Harry needs to sort it the fuck out and get this so called class team, that is 2 or 3 players away from winning the league he will have you believe, to be up for EVERY game. IThe way this season has gone we could, and should, have been in with a massive chance of getting a automatic CL spot as opposed to scarping a 4th spot. The management are happy to take all the plaudits when the going is good but by the same token they have to take the blame when it's not so good. Not signing a striker last summer, and this Jan, is gonna go down as one of our biggest fuck ups in many a year.

I agree with you completely. Harry has done so well but the last four games, against bottam of the table sides, has been immensely dissappointing. Yes every game is tough and these sides are battling for every point but a 3 point return, that is just so poor.

You think back to the Blackpool game, chance after chance spurned. Against Wolves Defoe hitting the post with 10 mins to go which would of made it 4-2. Then the West Ham game, again chance after gift wrapped chance spurned over and over again.

Ok today we were just poor and were lucky to even take a point but just think what a 7 point return would of done - and thats hardly unrealistic given that run of fixtures. We would be a point ahead of City.

Many put our qualification for the CL last season down to that run were we beat Arsenal and Chelsea etc on the trot. The sad irony will probably be that most will remember this sequence of games, against this opposition, as us blowing fourth this time around.

I hate to use this expression, but this is "typical Spurs". Best squad ever, blah, blah, blah. Heard it so many times.

A squad is only as good as their performances and their management. When both do well they have earned their right to consider themselves worthy, but. liek you say, the price of that is that you must take responsibility when you turn to shit.

Refreshingly, not only was Defoe finally subbed today, but Harry also hasn't yet been feeding the bullshit after today's result (mind you, the "its very difficult to win matches in this league" comment is borderline).

Those that are left, presumably.

Every club thinks that. Every supporter likes to think their players are all down to earth loyal lads. The fact of the matter is that money talks. If city or somebody else come in with a huge fee for modric and offer him silly money with champ league football he'll be off. Same applys to Bale.

It's true but we're also missing a striker who can punish lower teams.

We find it hard to play against teams that sit back and make us try to break them down

Can we not recall Robbie Keane? He has a big game mentality and experience
But isn't the point of the thread that we already have a 'big game mentality', but completely lack a 'small game mentality'? Does Keano have that?

I think the problem is that the players are unable to determine which games are the big games.
