Man Utd is a good ref. They got their players with SCOUTS. Giggs was scouted, Becks was with us but then Fergi bought his parents a house (thats the sneaky side we need) but he was a fan too so he didnt take much poaching.

It is a combo of scouting and training and I hope the balance is not too lop sided.

I mean building the thing for 30 million is one thing. Maintaining something the size of a village over 30 years is another. < cash for wages.

Perhaps part of the community projects is to build a scout hut, so we get first dib dib dibs on who's there

Or have I got completely the wrong end of what you are saying?

But we also have a good scouting set up. Hence how we got Parrett from QPR, Rose, Pekhart etc. and this trend will continue. These players that we bring in young have more chance of developing into top players if they have the right facilities.

As for the maintenance, sure it will be reasonably expensive to maintain, but we are a football club with a very high turnover and I really don't think that will be an issue at all. We still have to pay for our current training ground, the only way you can get round it is to not train.

I would be astounded if the business was set up so that the running of the training ground directly effected the cash for wages. We will have data and projections and they will be budgeted seperately. I don't think you should overly worry about the figure, I think it is a very small price to pay for the benefits and certainly not a problem to our finances.

I also think basing your ideals on the crop of United youngsters that happened to come through all at the same time is a little bit deluded, gibbs.

United will never get a crop of youngsters like that again - nor will any club.

Always something to moan about with you isn't it Gibbsy........

:)

Do a search on my posts. I have been defending a lot of players that have been slated. I have been positive recently.

I could be wrong about this its no biggie. I am still cynical about our structure to produce players that can oust the ones we get via transfers.

Looking back at that youth team is hilarious. The two Nevile's, Scholes, Becks, Giggs, Butt, and even Savage were all in one pic and all kiddies. It was friken amazing.

What do you mean I am deluded? What did I say that was delusional?

My point was good and crafty scouting obtained the kids in the first place. Not them going from school straight to a Man Utd Academy and produced.

I have yet to be impressed by the scouting set up. We are paying significant amounts for obvious players (like under 21 Internationals etc that everyone in football know is quality). We are not exactly unearthing gems at bargain prices. Or potential under the radar. We are brining in good young players, but paying millions for them.

I agree with you Gibbsy that scouting plays a major role. But those players wouldn't all be who they are now if the coaching hadn't been good. West Ham are another club who have produced their fair share of players, how much money do you think they have made out of their youth development? In fact probably their focus on the youth kept them competitive in the league. The likes of Lampard, Rio, Joe Cole, Carrick, Glenn Johnson, Mark Noble, even Jar Jar. They have managed to fill important positions in their team as well as making a whole stack of money (far in excess of £30m).

And as another point - that £30 million isn't thrown down the drain as you make out. The land will still be an asset and have a significant value - so just because something like that costs a lot, it's value will still be high 'books-wise'.

But Gibbsy surely you have to pay significant amounts for obvious U21 internationals, but they have gone straight into our first team squad.

As for the younger players you have to wait a fair bit longer to see them come through the ranks and even then it takes a lot of hard work on the training field to develop them into top players. We have a number of schoolboy internationals who we have acquired over the past couple of years, but you can't expect to have seen the results yet, certainly not from the new system (i.e. Comolli (and his scouting team), Inglethorpe, Moniz, Alvarez, Ramos). Most have only been here a year or so and the only way to get players coming through in a year is to pay the money (the like of Lennon, Bale, Taarabt, Boateng).

We will have to wait for players like Parrett, Rose, Obika etc. to come through the system, but what encourages me is that we probably have the best set up in terms of coaches to bring them through and this can only be aided by the new training facility. Even if we can only produce 1 player each year, that would be great, especially as you have said the last real player was Ledders and in the past we have neglected the youth.

Lets have some patience and see what the next few years brings, I'm particularly looking forward to seeing the development of Parrett and Rose.

Yep. I just hope the board don't think that this is going to be some magic grass that will yield results.

The real magic in my opinion is natural talent. The people chosen to train are more important than there being 7 fields to run on.

You know me I am obsessed with coaching and am convinced that you need star players off the field as well as on it:

Best Scouts
Best Coaches
Best Youth Players Chosen
Best Facilities

All these ducks need to be in a row when it comes to development.

I hope the vast development of the facilities don't overshadow the scouts, coaches etc that are needed to fill the training ground with the best of the best.

Its just in the past our ducks have been drunken lame and blind in previous attempts of developing players. We were one of the worst at it!

Ryan Mason came back and looked tasty too.

You are starting to bring me around. Hopefully by the time it is built we will have the same manager in place to use it!

I am in full agreement, but I believe in the last couple of years we have seen a vast alteration in our scouting and youth coaching set up. I know you like Inglethorpe and Moniz. I am sure Alvarez will bring a lot of useful things to the club in terms of fitness and developing the athleticism of our youngsters (something which a lot of our players who have come through in recent years have lacked) and Ramos will develop the right ethic within the club which can only aid development of youngsters. I am sure you agree this is a vast difference to a few years back.

The facilities can make a big contribution, especially if it means all of our age groups can get as much face time with the first squad. The chance for them to be around top professionals as well as having state of the art fitness, dietary, medical facilities is a major plus. I am sure they will be in a much better position to develop.

Very pleased with the new training ground, we need to compete with the top clubs in England and Europe, this means a top class training facility for our youth sides right through to the first team. Many a player has decided on a club having seen the clubs facilities and infrastructure.

Imagine in a few years time a promising youngster looking around our new training ground and a brand new 60,000 WHL, it's gotta help.

I wouldn't worry about the £30 million development cost, we'll probably make at least that from the sale/development of the Chigwell site.

Yes, something that's been overlooked. I'm sure there must be ample space for a developer to knock up quite a few very expensive des resses there.

I think we need the new training facilities for two reasons.

Firstly, a state of the art training set-up will help the development of youngsters and the first team. OK you need the staff to go with it but hiring and firing is a far quicker process than building.

Secondly, when trying to attract players both young and old to your club it's a damn sight easier with the best facilities on offer. Even a 16 year old is going to be drawn towards a £30 million academy as opposed to a wooden hut on a playing field.

As far as scouting is concerned it has been poor in the past but I disagree it is now. OK we have recently spent big on youngsters but they have been for the first team not for youth development so the cost is justified.
As far as the kids are concerned the 1 hour rule means we have to unearth a top Premiership talent on our doorstep. What are the chances of finding one of Europe's finest players within a stones throw of Tottenham?

So what we have now done is start to bring in 15/16/17 year olds to make up for this. In the last couple of seasons we have seen Peckhart, Olsen, Parrett, Rose, Obika, Berchiche and Dixon all come into the club. It's going to be another 2-5 seasons before we see any of these challenging for the first team so we really can't judge the current set-up until then.
