Bongani loan to Reading

25 July 2011

Share

Bongani Khumalo has joined Reading on a season-long loan.
The South Africa international defender joined us in January from club partner Supersport United and impressed during a two-month loan at Preston North-End towards the end of the season where he made seven appearances.
The defender was also part of the First Team squad that recently returned from South Africa and our successful participation in the Vodacom Challenge, featuring in all three fixtures.

Loads of my friends who support Reading and go to the games have said that he took a while to get going, but has fitted in well. His cross field passing has been very impressive and it appears to be a tactic they use quite often as they have quick wingers and try to get the ball out to them ASAP.

Well according to most Reading fans including my own family, he is the worst defender they have had for about 14 years.

Blimey, they must really think he's awful then based on most of the dross that I've seen their over that period of time! Andy Bernal springs to mind!

Not played since end of August

Bongani Khumalo eyes Reading return
Posted: 2011-10-20 18:31
Bongani Khumalo admits he is itching to win back his place in the starting line-up at Reading, but is prepared to wait for his chance.

The 24-year-old former SuperSport United captain joined the English Championship club on a season-long loan from Tottenham Hotspur back in July and started the first four matches of the campaign under boss Brian McDermott.

However, injury meant the centre-back lost his spot and, despite not having made an appearance since the Carling Cup defeat to Charlton Athletic at the end of August, Khumalo believes he is ready to make his return.

"I feel good and strong and ready to play so I just have to wait for my chance," he tells KickOff.com.

"The team is doing quite well at the moment so it's unlikely it will change right now – all I can do is keep working and make sure I'm ready.

"I think I've finally settled in now but it has been a tough year for me. I'm getting used to the pace of the game and feeling more confident now."

Khumalo's lack of game-time in England since January has seen Siyabonga Sangweni move ahead of him in the Bafana Bafana pecking order.

But even though he was an unused substitute in the catastrophic 0-0 draw with Sierra Leone that cost South Africa a place at the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations Gabon and Equatorial next year, Khumalo admits it was a painful experience.

"It's one of the things but the rule is there so we just have to move on now," he says.

Really can't see him ever making it with us. Imagine it will be Dawson Kaboul Cahill Caulker and King next year.

Looking to leave Reading and find another club that will play him week in week out

Fuck - half the comments below the article are about colonial racism and it being the reason why Khumalo can't make it in England... I'm really embarrassed to be South African sometimes.

Bongani is a great guy, hard worker and should really be good enough for the championship but I don't think he'll get a sniff at spurs with our current form/squad and with Calker coming thru the ranks. I do think we should bring him back as back up till King & Gallas are fit..

Brilliant how the OS still do updates on him. Maybe it's just to keep Steven Pienaar informed of what he's up to

Away from the UK, Bongani Khumalo was back in the PAOK line-up in a 2-0 win against Giannina in the Greek Super League. PAOK remain second, 15 points behind Olympiacos.
