Canelo Álvarez has signed the largest contract in the history of sport, agreeing a five-year, 11-fight deal worth at least $365m with streaming service DAZN.

The move comes after DAZN, which only launched in the US in September, looks to exploit a gap in the market after HBO announced it will end its 45-year history of broadcasting boxing at the end of 2018. Álvarez has a huge following in Mexico and the United States and his fights have pulled in hundreds of millions of dollars on pay-per-view. However, his fights on DAZN will not be part of a pay-per-view deal but will instead be accessible to viewers who pay $9.99 a month for a streaming service showing a package of combat sports. The Mexican fighter can also earn money on top of his deal if he helps bring in a certain number of subscriptions during his contract.

Álvarez’s next fight is against Britain’s Rocky Fielding on 15 December at New York’s Madison Square Garden. “The most important thing to me was being able to give the fans the opportunity to see me fight without having to pay the $70 or $80 for my fights on pay-per-view,” the 28-year-old Álvarez told ESPN on Wednesday. “That was the most important thing, more important than what I am making.

“It’s very important for me to give the fans the biggest fights and the most important fights, and I promise you I will always do that. The December fight with Fielding is a dangerous fight. I am moving up in weight, and I don’t know how my body will feel. But I always want to take on challenges, and I am very happy my fans will be able to see me fight for a small cost.”

Álvarez earned around $50m from his last fight, a defeat of Gennady Golovkin in September. The previous richest contract in sport was the 13-year, $325m deal Giancarlo Stanton signed with the Miami Marlins in 2014. Stanton now plays for the New York Yankees.

Any one watching BT1? All kicking off in the crowd. Frank Warren on the mic trying to calm things nobody facing the ring.

Been a couple of good fights on this card so far, the current being the best so far imo.

This is a fantastic interview for anyone that hasn't got a chance to see it...have so much time for Fury and am looking forward to seeing him school the incredibly overrated Wilder in December.

Watched this on Friday, really went into detail about the problems he was having and as you say a really good interview. He gonna fuck up Wilder.

I think it takes a lot of guts for a man of his background to talk about that stuff so openly.

Looking forward to that, will be a good scrap and there still seems to be a bit of genuine bad feeling between them.

These on Saturday...

BANTAMWEIGHT
RYAN BURNETT VS NONITO DONAIRE
WBA 'UNIFIED' CHAMPIONSHIP

SUPER LIGHTWEIGHT
JOSH TAYLOR VS RYAN MARTIN
WBC SILVER TITLE

Love wee Burnett as a fighter, unashamedly biased as fuck though.

Fights in the WBSS tonight will be live on Facebook from Glasgow.

Fancy Burnett to beat Donaire by decision or by TKO in the last 4...even though he's getting on a bit, I though Donaire hung tough against Frampton earlier in the year.

Josh Taylor to stop Ryan Martin too.

Wondering about opinions on Burnett here, am a massive fan as he's a Belfast lad and I think he's only going to improve.

So anyone giving Bellew a chance tomorrow?? It seems a bit of a dead cert that Usyk will win but it does seem that every time Bellew is the underdog he comes up with the goods

From what I've seen of both fighters, if Bellew beats Usyk then he'll be retiring with a new fan. Just don't feel he can match him technically.

Will need to put on a hell of a show tbh...good luck to him, think he'll need it.

Also think this is a good fight for Usyk as he works his way up the weights...still unsure if he has the power or chin to trouble the main Heavyweights, as slick as he looks he hasn't ever been overly tested yet.

Technical brilliance against a big heart. Usyk is a great technical fighter and Bellew has a great heart I can see Bellew winning this as he will be relentless in pursuit of the last big one. His ego wants him to be known as the best in the UK ever. If he gets to Usyk I can see Bellew knocking him out inside 8.

Bellew looking in the best shape physically I think I've ever seen him in.

Looking forward to this more now.

Would love Bellew to win, but just can’t see it myself. Slaughtered a very over-the-hill Haye last time out doesn’t prepare you for one of the best boxers in the business.

I think he’ll struggle like he did against Adonis Stevenson - who I personally consider the only top class (or bordering on) opponent Bellew has faced. Though Cleverley had his moments too.

Would love to be wrong, as I really like Bellew as a person.

The last bellew, cleverly fight was one of the worst fights I've ever seen, absolutely terrible. Cleverly looked like he'd never boxed before.
