This is heartbreaking stuff, on their way to play in the copa sudamericana final which is kind of like the south american Europa League equivalent. Whole team pretty much wiped out.

Seems 3 players survived from 22 on board, can imagine they will be badly injured also

Reminiscent of Marshall University (We Are Marshall movie).

Such a shame.

Awful. But surprised it doesn't happen more often considering the miles that top athletes rack up.

76 confirmed dead, 5 survivors.

A miracle that there are any survivors at all really as plane crashes usually spare nobody.

On their way to hopefully winning their first Continental South American trophy and first real prominent competition and the majority of them end up losing their lives. Devastating.

Just 5 survivors now as one has passed away in hospital

Awful news, on their way to their first major final too.

Some nice tributes from top Premier League clubs on Twitter. We, meanwhile, are tweeting comments from Kevin Wimmer about Swansea. Our official social media leaves a hell of a lot to be desired.

Absolutely tragic. I feel for all the familes and friends of those who have perished, including the football team. They are saying three of the team are known to have survived and are in hospital.

I was only a kid when the Munich air disaster happened and this brought the memory flooding back. We had no TV and heard the news on the radio in our kitchen in the morning and later saw the photos in a newspaper. The media is very different nowadays but the impact of what has happened to a football team that had a meteoric rise to success is no less.

Two players - Alan Ruschel and Danilo - seem to have survived and they were sat next to each other.

Don't really see why a club should be held to a response tbh. There were probably some Accountants on board too, statistically you'd imagine there were anyway. Should KPMG official twitter be tweeting something in memory of any accountants who died?

Anyway. RIP all the poor victims :(

We coined the hashtag #FootballFamily. Yes we should have responded by now. It's not a moral necessity, it's PR, and the fact is the Arsenal do social media better than anyone in the league. Our attempts are laughable.

We have plenty of connections with South American football, be it Poch & Lamela, or going back to some really crap Brazilians we've had.
Our social media team really are on another planet most of the time though.

Oh, is there a league table now for performative empathy? We should definitely go all out to beat the Woolwich, then.
