Not sure I see this one happening anymore.

Would probably fill the same need as Grealish and by all ITK accounts Grealish is Poch’s #1 choice for that position and that transfer seems further down the road to be done.

Funny you say that because most fans here in Portugal think that the Sporting president tipped off the hooligans of where exactly in the facilities the players were and told the security to let the 50 hooligans stroll in unchallenged.

He'd been throwing the players under the bus for the weeks building up to it too.

Perhaps it's like Levy's evil evil twin and he negotiates in different ways.

Jesus what a **** putting the players at risk like that.

Carvalho, Dost, Fernandes and Martins all resigned now too. With the other 2 last week, regardless of any signing on fee, you'd imagine we would have been keeping an eye on the situation

Even if it were a case that a signing on fee would be required to buy their way out of the contract, wouldn't that just equate to paying off the remainder, of which would be significantly less than a transfer fee.

@Trix this isn't a question about your ITK info but a general one about this contractual situation and "resigning from a contract" if that's ok. What is the legal situation around this, can they just walk out of their contracts like that and if so is there a precedent for it?

These kinds of things always seem a bit too good to be true. I have a feeling these guys will be keen for someone to pick them up quickly if (legally) possible. Which although we've done occasionally I don't think is a particular strong suit of ours while other clubs may just throw money at them and get them out of there.

Would be great if we could capitalise on this though. Even just for a squad player or two if Poch has main targets elsewhere!

When there is a simple no complicated deal to be done we tend to get it right. I can think of Dembele and Paulinho as good examples with clauses. I'm sure there are a few more. Where we struggle is when there are bigger clubs interested and we play kiss chase all summer hoping the other clubs get bored.

Normally players can't just 'walk away for contracts' (otherwise every transfer would be much simpler), but this situation is different. The players have been physically attacked and harmed at their workplace. Their president (and boss) doesn't seem to do much to protect them, and there's a serious suspicion he was involved in the attack (or at least, knew it would happen and didn't stop it). Under EU law (I think), if a worker feels unsafe at his work place and has a reasonable reason to believe he's under physical threat there, any contract is void and can be rescinded. This is working laws, not football laws. Sporting players were attacked at their workplace and can all claim to be unsafe at work, hence why they have a legal reason to terminate their contracts.

Well this should be interesting then!

Weird if they don't take a bigger step than to Benfica given their situation.
Yeah, I'm sure there is some shady agent goings on if this has indeed already been put in place. I have no doubt their reasons for leaving are legitimate, I would if I was them. But why not take some time and assess the best options. If they really are on a free I'm sure there would be a lot of clubs interested. Quickly signing for Benfica is a very odd move. And really, if they go there then their price would go straight back up to 60/70 million and no doubt they probably won't leave Portugal for a vary, vary long time if at all. This realistically is one of the few chances they have, especially Gelson, to leave the country.

Seems there's some proper dodgy stuff going on in Portuguese football. This whole Mendes connection at Wolves, the saga at Sporting with players being beaten, now all these players apparently heading to Benfica.

Him and Bryan Cristante have the same worrying trait of having bounced around a bunch and then had one good season. I’d rather go for someone who doesn’t run the risk of having just had a purple patch.
