Don’t wanna make this about specific players we might buy from World Cup hence not in transfers rumours. More about why it’s frowned upon to buy players off the back of a World Cup. At the end of the day it’s the highest level of world football so if a player shines and they have a reasonable CV to back it up why not. Also sprang to mind that with a few clubs doing their business early Liverpool united etc. If a diamond did appear at the World Cup would leave the pathway much clearer for us. Might be quite shrewd to leave £40m in the budget for such an occurrence. So how would you feel if a complete unknown has a stunning World Cup, would you take a punt ?

Nope. I wouldn't. Lots of players have had good WCs without doing anything special at club level.

There aren’t really any complete unknowns these days, it was different years ago but the scouting networks cover the whole globe now so the days of finding players that no one has heard of or already researched etc are minimal IMO

Well we really missed a trick on the best players of Euro 2004, Traianos Dellas, Giourkas Seitaridis and actual Player of the Tournament Theodoros Zagorakis.

I’d say there’s still plenty of relatively unknown diamonds out there. Players are still picked up for bargain prices every season in PL. Just find it strange how a player can perform on the biggest stage in the world then flop when come to PL.

WC football is nothing like the Premier League.

Lots of the top players in the world cup may be tired after a full season and so not at their best. It's also summer so demands a slower pace than an English winter.
Therefore, when Yedlin can keep Hazard quiet in the world cup, it doesn't mean he should be our starting RB in December.

Last time I can think we bought "unknowns" based on a good world cup performance was Popescu and Dumitrescu in 94.

Most of the others have been established players elsewhere prior to a world cup.

& Sissoko off the back of his Euros exploits.

Same principle

He was playing in the Premier and tore us apart last game of the season before the Euros.

In honour of this being my 1664th post I'm off to the pub. If anyone can make it to the plough in the next half an hour I'll buy you a drink! :ROFLMAO:

EDIT, There's 216 pubs called the plough in England so good luck.

Scouting has changed a lot since the 90s. If a player plays well at the world cup, our scouts will have access to a datbank of all their games from the last few years. There's really no excuse to buy a player off the back of a few good appearances.

Having said that, the ability to perform on a big stage, with the pressure of your country on your shoulders is something that can't be quantified either.

My memory isn't the best but I seem to recall we played them in a friendly, that transfer felt more like we were trying to drum up some interest in the USA than a post cup buy.

We did something very similar with Mabizela [sp?] or was it Khumalo ? after playing his team in a friendly in South Africa.

That probably explains why we never took a serious run at signing Messi.

We did play Seattle that summer, but Yedlin talks to move to Europe started right after the 2014 World Cup - where he was considered an exciting young prospect.

Never judge a player based on their (good or bad) performance at an international tournament.
