I hindsight, shame Onomah didn't go there with him, at least they have some tactical/coached ethos. Bruce is very much of the Redknapp/Sherwood school of "get out there and run arraaand a lot"

But the problem with Onomah isn't tactical or technical, it's that he doesn't run arraaand enough.
I suspect they wanted him to play for an old school manager in a physical league to understand the physical part of the game is the most important.
He has to learn to impose himself, that doesn't have to mean kicking the opposition off the pitch, but covering every blade of grass either pressing, dropping back, or moving into space for the ball.
If you look at the heat maps of the top players they are everywhere, always looking to get involved.
Josh is comfortable at u21 level but senior football is a whole new level. He's already shown at Villa he's the most technically competent player in the team but he's been overtaken by workhorses and results have picked up.

Hopefully, this season, he will learn to become a workhorse and then his talent on top will see him back in our first team squad.

One of the reasons he’s comfortable at U21 level is because he’s played in his best position, and invariably in a well coached team that’s tactically set up with some intention to get the best out of its constituant parts.

He’s been overtaken by workhorses because his manager hasn’t worked out how to coach and tactically balance the need for both work and brains.

When Alli plays in CM3 for us he’s not exactly tearing around like a tenacious metronome, but Poch balances it off.

How’s Onomah going to shine playing as a second striker for a team that hump everything?

Yes, he’s got to work on his game but using him the way Bruce is isn’t improving or teaching him anything much except how to jump a bit higher.

53' 1-1 Carter-Vickers on the overlap puts in a superb cross that's turned in expertly by Leon Clarke. Game on!

    won 4-1 in the end.

This is turning out to be a very successful loan for CCV. Really pleased he has cemented himself into the team & also great that they play the same formation that we do.

With CCV and Foyth we have two potentially excellent centre backs to add to our already quality defence. Personally I just love the fact that we are building a strong young team that have the ability to step into the first team in the positions required. The likes of:

CCV, Foyth, KWP, Bennetts, Onomah, TOB, Edwards et al, are all top quality young players that could play in the first team now alongside our more experienced players. Great times.

Now we know a good coach to send our lads too in the future (if we need to) - hats off to Chris Wilder. Looking at a potential double promotion!

yup he seems to be a great coach.

i think back to that deadline day video they did with him, and how some players weren't keen on joining him, bet they are kicking themselves now.

Just been watching through those CCV clips and love how quick, positive and accurate his distribution is. He's becoming an absolute monster too.

Good thread on him after tonights game

    https://www.s24su.com/forum/index.php?threads/ccv.59878/

Pleased he is doing so well there, if he is playing on the right of a back 3 he is really going to have to improve his play out of the back, but I've always said his passing, if he has confidence is more than adequate. It can improve but I've seen him break lines before. His strenght and pace is translating well to the Championship.

Also found this tweet which made me laugh

Knowing spurs that carter vickers guy gonna walk in after alderweireld and be like prime Pique

I wonder what type of midfielder they want. The only ones I think that would be worth loaning out and getting experience from development squad would be Roles or Duncan. We know Poch won't TOB out, but I think Roles would score goals with them, and has the mentality and grit to play in Championship. He has more than enough ability to be playing in the CM regardless of the type they need,

    loved this bit
That tackle by CCV near the end of the first half was the best moment of the game, bar the goals. Clobbered him (cleanly), hooked the ball away, jumped to his feet, played a lovely little pass.

the way ccv is developing, we are loaded with right sided/ middle center backs, with Sanchez, foyth, dier and toby. Wonder how we are going to manage all those bodies, also it'd be interesting to see if Foyth could play the left side, he's definately technically good enough.

Poch loves options. He knows players get injured, lose form, sometimes need a rest so will be happy the more options he has. The more successful we are on the pitch the happier players will be to be part of the squad
