I think I am correct in saying that we are the only Premiership side who has it's goalkeeper as Captain. The question I would ask is can a player in that position effectively 'captain' the side during a match when perhaps things need to change quickly on the pitch ? Would it be better to have someone who can bark out instructions from midfield rather than a lone figure situated far from the action ?

Please understand that I am neither condoning or condemning this decision by Spurs but simply asking for your views and opinions on this. Lloris does appear a relatively quiet and unassuming character when interviewed but does he have another side to him during a game ?.

I really would appreciate some informative posts as to why you think a goalkeeper can effectively hold down such an important position or then again why he shouldn't.

I have no particular opinion either way so please don't have a pop at me but I have often wondered why no other team adopts the same tactic......?

It really doesn't matter who the captain is during the game imo. Poch is the captain on match day and can get instructions out to whoever is closest

Off the top of my head Cech, Schmeichel, Gomes and Heaton have also captained their teams although admittedly not (as far as i'm aware) on a full-time basis. Having said that, even if they do it only a few times a season it can't be seen as a problem generally, otherwise it'd be a rarer occurance than rocking horse shit on the floor in Hamleys.

Personally, i'm not fussed who has the gig, it's more of an honarary thing these days anyway, gone are the days when you'd have a Blanchflower out there changing things as needed, today's footballer needs to be told when to take a shit let alone anything more taxing.

Your answer therefore begs the question "What the hell is the point of having a player appointed Captain for a match ?"

Because the laws of the game say you have to.

Hope the likes of John Terry, Wayne Rooney and Vincent Kompany don't find out...they'll be gutted to discover the title was meaningless !!

Que?

I was responding to the comment questioning why have a player appointed as captain at all. And I replied because the laws of the game state that you must have a nominated captain on the pitch. Not sure what the disagree rating is for!

I can understand Lloris as our most experienced player taking the duty. On the pitch I think its probably better to have an outfield player that is in the midst of it geeing everyone up but I think Kane& Jan do a lot of talking. As others have said Poch is very vocal and is the real leader it's only when people are slacking or need to give more you need the captain to put the boot in. The defence calls the back line and Kane leads the press so we are all good.

I wish it was like rugby where only the captain can talk to the ref.

It really should be this situation as well. Such an easy thing to implement but nope the authorities remain scared of the players so don't do it.

Anyway...whilst that is not the case, I agree with those that say the role isn't as important as it used to be. A lot of it is the influence around the club itself and in interviews etc so no reason a keeper can't do it.

In terms of leading on the pitch I'd hope we wouldn't leave that to one player and with the likes of Toby, SuperJan and Harry in the team we've got a fairly good selection of influential characters to keep us going forwards on matchdays.

I think I may have read somewhere that FIFA were keen on introducing it, I might be remembering wrong, but there was a committee lead by Marco Van Basten that was looking into things that could improve the game.

I'd always prefer an outfield player. That said, what we are doing seems to be working.

If the only reason is to conform with the law then why not abandon the law if as you say the real captain is the manager. If it's just a lip service title then abandon it and hold the manager responsible for team behaviour.

I mean, each unit on the pitch will have a 'leader' and the team will know who those are. However, our team is full of players who show leadership, who stand up and are accountable and that is rare. I'd rather than than a dude with a bloodied bandage on his head staggering about shouting at halfwits.

 You been on the sauce? I think you're getting a little confussed dear boy... I didn't say anything about the manager being the real captain???

You said:

Which you disagreed with. And by the way is also a fact.

Quite right...totally confused....sincerest and deepest apologies...rating duly changed...it was kaz Hirai who stated :

A leader is a leader regardless of position, that's true in life and football. Lloris has always presented himself as class personified, and he's the captain of France as well. I can't think of anybody I'd rather have represent my club then Lloris who exudes calm, collected excellence with just the right amount of Gallic charm.

There is an interview with Trippier doing the rounds.

“He called me in and said ‘I know what you did last night'. I thought I was in trouble even though I didn’t do anything...He scared me and brought in Hugo, the captain. I thought ‘did I do something last night? No I didn’t’. He then said - congratulations, you have been called into England.”

That suggests a bigger responsibility for our Captain, rather than just being the wearer of a trivial armband on match day.

Personally, I'm very happy with Hugo as Captain. He's clearly respected by all his team mates at Spurs and France. Long may it continue.
