We'll have to do it again at the Lane after Sunday's somewhat scrappy FA Cup third round tie against Cardiff City at Ninian Park ended in a goalless draw.
Chances were few and few between with Jermain Defoe just off target twice for us while Paul Robinson hardly had a save to make - Michael Chopra poked Cardiff's best opportunity wide when Lee Young-Pyo's headed back-pass fell short.
The atmosphere inside Ninian Park cranked up considerably just ahead of kick-off, although not too many of the home fans were singing along to an earlier airing of the Chas n Dave number 'Rabbit'...

It was fairly typical cup tie stuff in the first ten minutes, Dimitar Berbatov and Jermain Defoe doing enough to suggest they would be able to disrupt Cardiff's best laid defensive plans, while the home side demonstrated a desire to get the ball down and play a passing game.

It didn't need any intricate football to create the first real opening, just an undercooked header back in the direction of Paul Robinson by Lee Young-Pyo that was seized on by the speedy Michael Chopra, who did manage to steer past the quickly advanced Robinson, but also wide of the post.

Midway through the half a Berbatov snapshot had Neil Alexander scrambling in the Cardiff goal, while Robinson was none too comfortable in dealing with a routine header at the other end. Cardiff's played gathered momentum and the boys were planted on the back foot for a spell, during which time Michael Dawson had to be his towering self to avert back post danger before a Chopra cross only just cleared the head of Steve Thompson.

Cardiff were certainly the livelier side going into the interval.

Defoe drilled a powerful low effort just wide of Alexander's right hand upright just after the break as a little more intent crept into the team's play. However, the intensity level of Cardiff - roared on by a full house - didn't decrease and they were very quickly into their stride on the counter attack.

Riccy Scimeca punted just wide after good work from Willo Flood down the right. It was Lennon-time, with the jet-heeled wide man entering play on 67 minutes in place of Danny Murphy.

Steed Malbranque came pretty close with a scissor kick from a Pascal Chimbonda cross as the clock ticked towards the last 15 minutes.
Both sides continued to push but it was always a case of carving out that one chance - and neither side did.

Greeting Fellow spurs Fans from acorss the globe ! I am still having that nightmare from last year against the Foxes ! But we have a hards proposition, which I think we will overcome ! Lets get behind our lads ! Great to see lennon and Keane back ! Berbs and Defoe to Destroy the Sheep Shaggers ! We love you spurs ! :) :) :) :)
  3. mart_loves_me
    Our bench looks fucking strong!
  4. Adam
Haha, Tainio, some people never learn do they?
  5. chiveliyid
Strong team, strong bench. Only wonder is where is Davids? Is he still injured or just not getting a look in?
  6. elDiablo
Relatively strong, and hopefully the creativity that Murphy and Hudd can provide will compensate for the lack of pace in the centre.

im suprised that zokora is not playing. we are all aware that he has been showing poor form of late, but maybe a tough, physical game against lower opposition can aid his development. On a side note though, i do love the fact that when players show poor form, Jol just drops them. This is obviously how it should be, and a managers responsibility - but there have been managers that are too afraid to drop their under performaing players!!!!

The defence should work hard today for not conceding any goal to boost the psycological confidence in coming matches (we have conceded ? 12-13 consecutive league matches??).
  8. Marty
Predictable line-up. Must win this one.

    COYS!
  9. Dangerousa
What the hell is Murphy doing, his lack of positional play is putting us under unneccessary pressure down the left flank,

and Robbo's looking very poor as well again.

    Not looking good here guys

    C'mon SPURS
  10. longdistancespursfan

Maybe thats because Murphy is not a left sided player, if he is playing badly out there look no further than Jol, its his fault, he is adamnat he can do a job out there.

We need to quieten down the crowd, keep possesion for a while.
  11. Dangerousa
The manager has put him on the left,

Whether that is right or wrong right now is immaterial, he has to give some support out there, he hasn't been on the left side of pitch at all.

And has Tanio disappeared in the last ten minutes?
  12. Shaymus
More midfield mediocrity. No service for Defoe and BerBs
  13. devonte01
Im obviously not BMJ or purporting to have the nous on tactical formation but why does Murphy keep going for a walkabout in the middle of the park, right midfield instead of his position LM? Am i missing the tactics by BMJ? Could someone with the nous please somebody explain to me?
  14. longdistancespursfan
im sure he is doing his best, but its like saying if we had to put jermain defoe in goal he would have to come and collect crosses, I understand your frustrations and I dont actually rate murphy but whoever has played that left side we have the same problems, until we buy someone to play there I dont think we can critisize the performances of those trying out there, if there is a critisism then it should be of Jol./comolli/levy.
  15. alfiespurs
Typical Cup Game ! Chopra looks to be a real menace, if he is let loose. The weather is not helping much, but this is the beauty of the cup. Anyway, chin up lads,. all is not lost !
  16. longdistancespursfan

yeah this is apparnatly a jol tactic to leave no one left midfield so that leaves the whole of the left flank open to lee.... shame when he gets possesion he can do fuck all with it, hmm wonder wat he will do next cut in on his right foot?

Actually today he once went outside and used his left, ended up with a goal kick,

If I wasnt a baldy bastard already I would be tearing my hair out!!
  17. longdistancespursfan

Lol your positive these days alfie, good to see. Were doing ok so far, this is a very tricky tie, they have a partisan crowd up for it and its the we hate the english thing, we might have to take them back to the lane, as long as we dont get beat and were in the draw for the 4th round i will be happy.

Quite a dissapointing game so far. The forward line looks very lively and started brightly, but our midfield looks shocking IMO. Hudd for me has not lookded composed at all. Too many passes from all the midfield boys were to hurried, and allowed for mistakes to be made.

To be fair to Cardiff though, they have played very well. That have hassled all our players when in possession and have broken at pace.

Robbo for me looks very edgy. It seems as if the lads are so desperate not go out at this stage that they aint playing footie as they should.....it really isnt flowing!!

Hopefully our quality will shine through on what looks like an absolutely shitty cardiff afternoon
  19. davidmatzdorf
Sloppy defending is the main concern at half time. Why don't Robinson and Davenport communicate the way Robinson and King do? Lee, with the exception of his idiotic back-header, has been OK and Chimbonda has been excellent, as ususl, but Dawson is covering for a lot of poor organisation back there. Davenport has been fine when he plays as part of a back 4, as opposed to on his own.

All in all, we're lucky not to be a goal down, not because the rest of the team has been playing badly, but because of the panicky defending.

The midfield is a real 50%/50% zone. Cardiff obviously have some very good players in there and they're actually trying to play the ball through there quite frequently - not always hoofing it forward. When we can string a few passes together, we're starting moves, but they aren't leading to chances.

Malbranque looks good and has improved as the game has gone on. Huddlestone has been the usual combination of beautiful passes and loss of possession. Murphy, when he has the ball, is using it well, but (as others have noted), he's playing as a central midfielder, usually not even in the left channel, let alone on the left flank. Tainio has been doing the dirty work, but Murphy is in his space all the time.

Berbatov is holding the ball up very well, but nothing is coming of it. In the first 10 minutes, he and Defoe linked up beautifully 2 or 3 times, but Cardiff have figured out how to harass Dimitar off the ball, so everything has broken down since then.

We need Lennon on the pitch soon. I'd take off Murphy and switch Malbranque to the left.

It's the sort of match that I don't see how we can win by controlling it. Cardiff are a good side and difficult to play against. If we are going to win this, it will have to be with pace and quality and bits of magic. We certainly won't out-hustle or out-pass them.

At this stage, I'd take a draw and a trip back to WHL.
