Apologies @Krule

You've took the time to start a thread, a platform for discussion.

So...I'm sorry to hear about Carrick's irregular heart rhythm, and wish him every success for the future.

Have to agree, only 34 caps was surprising. I suppose the love in for Gerrard and Lampard hampered his appearances somewhat.

The fact that England squandered both him and Scholes' passing ability to continuously keep trying to play Gerrard and Lampard together is symptomatic of the problems England have had in recent years.

When he left it set back Spurs' progress significantly and I'm not sure we had a player quite as integral to the way we play until we signed Eriksen.

Was hugely underrated at Spurs as well by many. Sadly Fergie recognised his talent and that was that.

No need to apologise at all....he's one of the few players who left us because we did underestimate him as talkshowhost86 pointed out....Fergie took full advantage of that unfortunately. Always liked the lad and I wish him well in his new coaching role.

We signed him when we were finally starting to get our act together. That midfield of Carrick, Jenas, Lennon and Davids was a real step up in quality compared to what came immediately before it and Carrick's passing ability was integral to our relatively dramatic improvement as a team. It was painfully obvious how much we missed him when we tried to replace him with Zokora.

Excellent player for Spurs. Good passer and ball retention he always made us click. It took us ages to find a better central midfielder until we got Modric.

United got a steal, so did we when we got him from the hammers on the cheap

The Scholes case is a bit of a myth.

He played 4 tournaments - World Cup 98, Euro 2000, World Cup 2002 and Euro 2004.

Only in 2004 did he play on the left and even then it's not like he was literally stuck on the left wing. That was in my opinion England's best tournament of the four, and the last good one, because the performances were good. The team played spritely attacking football and it was more of a diamond shape than a rigid 4-4-2. It was also Gerrard and Lampard's first tournament together.

Scholes chose to call time on England right after. So I don't buy this argument that England wasted Scholes to shoe-horn Gerrard and Lampard. Scholes was a great player but there is a bit of revisionism when it comes to him. He was never held in such light until he retired.

On Carricks caps don't forget how many caps he didn't get when Fergie pulled him out "injured"

Not so sure. All I know is, Scholes could literally direct a game, in a way that no other England player could in his generation. I always thought there was only space for one of Gerrard and Lampard...and one of them had to give way. I'd choose Gerrard ahead of Lampard; but Scholes had a vision, composure, and whole pitch and game awareness that should have been properly utilized.
