I think it may be time for fans to admit King and Woodgate are almost done as Spurs players, their ages and specifically their injuries are catching up with them. It seem to me that management already has come to this conclusion through the apparent approaches to Kjaer, Cahill and Kaboul - all three would see themselves as starters

So if that truly is the case and we do have a legitimate crack at signing any of the above three defenders who would you prefer??

IMO either of Cahill or Kjaer would be a mark of intent and Kaboul would be great if you look at it from a versatility stand point. Either way any of these three would sure add a much needed threat from set pieces.

I dont really know much about KJear but would much prefer a proven Prem defender. Kaboul would be cheaper, due to the money Portsmouth owe us, and I feel more agile than Cahill. However I cant really see how anyone cant demand a start competiting against a back two of Bassong and Dawson after 5 clean sheets on the trot.

We need someone who could come straight in, someone who has experience of the EPL. With that in mind I'd go for Cahill any day of the week.

As for Kaboul can someone remind me why we sold him.....

Reports have stated that Kjaer wants 100k a week so forget that one (if true). I'd go for Cahill. Good defender and scores a few too. Wouldn't have thought we'd get much change out of 15m though. Should never have sold Kaboul, he was raw but had great potential and with a run of games and a bit of experience has shown what he's capable of. Seem to remember him getting itchy feet though as wasn't getting many games so would he want to comie back and compete with Bass and Daws?

Dont know much about this Kjaer but if he is hot property and we have a chance to snap him up I think we should go for it. Cahill would be my second choice. I think both clubs will want 15-20 million so its down to Harry who he thinks is the best.

Cos he young, he got chucked in at the deep end, when we were fighting relegation and his confidence was blown. He`s now settled a Portsmouth and performing well. I feel that he would be great competition to Bassong and Dawson and the three could compete for the 2 positions, as opposed to Cahill who I feel expect to start.

As I have never seen Kjaer play, I think it'd be stupid to vote for him so have gone Kaboul as I was gutted when he left and thought it pretty obvious he was going to be good. I also miss his rocket shot.

Chiellini (sp?) is an absolute beast and would be a great signing even if it meant spanking 18 mill on him and a huge contract. I know more about him and seen him play more than Kjaer but I back Redknapp completely and who ever he brings in i'll be happy with.

Kjaer or Cahill would be good additions to the squad. NOt so sure about Kaboul, his positioning isn't great and he can't be arsed to get back too quickly when he ventures forward leaving gaps.

Interestingly Pompey have conceded only 32 goals this season which is less than any other team in the bottom half. So maybe Kaboul is doing something right. Could only see him as back up though. Might also do a job whenever WP gets suspended too.

I wouldn't give up on King and Woodgate yet! I think King will be able to play 30 league matches a season - this year he's been unlucky with other injuries. Woodgate is being experimented on in the surgery room and there's a chance he could fully recover or never play again.
Our backups have been excellent so any defender coming in would have a fight on his hands to get first team football.

The thing about King's other injuries is that they're possibly a result of his major injuries - i.e. so long as he's carrying them he'll keep getting other minor injuries. Hopefully I'm wrong though, and fingers crossed for Woodgate too.

Maybe they shouldn't be written off just yet, but if by next season nothing has changed, then maybe we should be looking for a first-choice pairing that will play 30-40 games a season? I haven't watched enough this season to judge whether that could be Dawson and Bassong - anyone think they could be our long-term first choices?

If we were to sign Cahill or Kaboul, would they be ahead of Dawson or Bassong in the pecking order? Would either of them come to sit on the bench?

No idea about Kjaer - never heard of him before today!

Admire your optimism, but I doubt it.

There’s a very good chance King's injuries have occurred because he doesn't train, at least 3 times this season he has had to be taken off it looks like when he does finally play and run about his body isn't ready.

I've sung "you can stick Sol Campbell up your arse..." as loud as the next person, I fucking love Ledley King, but the team has to come first and we need a settled back line. It’s no coincidence that we've let a few in since BAE/Bale and Bassong/King have been swapped about (not that I'm targeting any one of them).

Dawson has been one of our most improved players this season and is looking very composed and confident (and even looks capable of scoring a few now). Overall I think Bassong has had a good debut season (odd mistake here and there but he's still young for a CB) and compliments Dawson well. When needed Dawson comes out and pressures while Bassong covers with his pace. So to answer the question above, yes I think at the moment they are good enough to be our first choice pairing. They have clocked up the most games out of our CB's and our goals against record isn't too bad (better than the scum!).

Regarding Kjaer, I'd never heard of him either until I player Football Manager 2010! He's attracting a lot of attention from big clubs by the sound of it (in real life I mean!) but the key thing against this for me is his age, I'd rather us buy a defender with experience because that’s something we miss from King and Woodgate.

Cheers for all the comments. Kjaer sure seems the poll stand out at the moment.

I should have mentioned this in my original post too... Is Dervite an option?? As with Kaboul you don't captain French underage teams (i'd heard he captained the U19's) without having something about you.
