Absolute disgrace of a referee tonight. 2 of the most blatant penalties I've ever seen not given. As others have said though, Roma's inexcusably clueless tactics in the first leg and appalling defending this leg put them in a position where they made it too hard for themselves.

This..

"
here is a scenario where fourth place in the Premier League - Tottenham currently - don't qualify for the Champions League next season.

If Liverpool win the Champions League and drop out of the top four (which is still possible - if Chelsea beat them this weekend, the gap is down to three points and the Blues have a game in hand) and Arsenal win the Europa League, then England have reached the maximum of five teams you can have in the competition.

As if Spurs fans needed another reason to want Arsenal to lose to Atletico Madrid tomorrow..."

Can this really happen to us? Knowing our luck I just don't know.

No because surely for both us and Liverpool to drop out of the top 4 would rely on Arsenal finishing top 4 unless I'm missing something, which is no longer mathematically possible since the weekend. i.e. you'd have to have:

City
Utd
Chelsea
Arsenal
Liverpool
Us

Right?

Arsenal win Europa is automatic qualification to the CL, Liverpool winning Cl, that's 2. Then you have the Utd and City and third place only getting the other CL spots. 5 is the max number of CL spots, so if Liverpool drop out of the top 4 and Chelsea finish 3rd above us then we don't qualify for the CL.

The main reason I want Real Madrid to win it is because if they lose there's every chance Zidane goes and then our resolve will be tested to keep Poch!
I genuinely believe people overrate poch on here, he is a great manager for us but what has he done to be linked with the biggest jobs in the world?

Nah Liverpool are quickly becoming the team I hate most. Saw a Atletico Madrid fan on Reddit saying he might support Real for the first time ever because he wouldn’t stand Liverpool fans if they win. That’s how bad the Liverpool fans are, other teams from around the world is starting to hate them

Doesn't matter what they do, they are a sideshow. Arsenal are our most hated rivals, always will be.

To be fair - just making the final is massive in itself. I'm just reacting to the perception that Liverpool have been utterly incredible when we have every chance of finishing above them despite playing away from home all year AND having played them off the park home and away.

Fucking City... :banghead::D
Thing is, they had a very easy run and yes were incredibly lucky, but, if our situations were reversed, I see nothing to suggest we could have beaten City over two legs so we still would have gone out. Granted, I think Juve would have beaten them, but as you say, what they have achieved in CL is very impressive and more then we have done. I will be very surprised if Liverpool don't win the cup at this point. I hope not, but RM are looking shocking and I don't see Liverpool not scoring.

Ffs. Somebody post a table of Net Spend and wage spend Vs table outcome.

We have surpassed Arsenal on less spending - before moving into our new stadium - and look to have staked our place in the elite of Europe.

Pep and Mourinho spent over 400, 000 million pounds to get City and United to get past us.

I'd suggest we give the referees some assistance (maybe with video) so that missed calls that occur at high speed don't impact who makes the Champions League final.

But, it seems most people don't want that. Maybe we should just accept that these mistakes will happen when you don't get to take a second look from 10 angles in slow motion.

Agreed on the Arsenal point - However we're not in the elite of Europe after just one season of champions league football, getting knocked out in the round of 16.

When those referee mistakes happen in a run of the mill Everton vs Swansea game in the Premier League, it's easy to say "referee mistakes are apart of the game". When it happens in the later stages of the Champions League or the World Cup, those pills are harder to swallow. Referees need the help and the VAR system gives them a safety net. It's unfortunate that England's trial period was such a disaster compared to other countries and leagues. But if the missed PK and red card to Alexander-Arnold is apart of the game when Liverpool play some Championship side in the FA Cup, then it's also apart of the game when referee decisions likely decide both Champions League final teams.

That was tough on Roma tonight, some really bad calls, Scouse were very fortunate, should be a goal fest in the final as both teams are a mess at the back but great going forward, would make it 50/50, in fact wouldn't be surprised if the ref has a big say.

Garanteed the final is gonna be a low scoring affair, gping to be played at a different tempo with players playing with caution.

Not sure why you're having a pop at me about that. I'm fully in favour of VAR and think it should've been introduced a long time ago. My point on the referee tonight though was that even without the benefit of replays etc both of those incidents should've been given by a top quality ref, which you would assume was who was picked for a CL semifinal.

Liverpool keep conceding late goals, which obviously points to them running out of steam late in games either mentally or physically.

It’s a shame that the final is 2 weeks after the last league game as they’ll now have a little break to recharge their batteries. That might help them out a lot unfortunately.

Looking at things another way RM can sit down and say Liverpool were stuffed 4-2 and maybe it could have been worse if the 2 penalty calls were given so I agree that their defence is suspect especially late in the game.

Secondly are the Liverpool players who would hope to be in the final going to be fully committed in their last two PL matches ? Would they risk injury, would Klopp play or rest his key players like Mane, Salah and Firminho ?

They will only go after Poch when he starts winning trophies.

Means nothing. Zidane's only experience in management prior to taking the job was unofficially managing the B team for a season without a single coaching badge!

Spot the difference:

Real Madrid route to the final:

Apoel Nicosia
Borussia Dortmund
Tottenham Hotspur
Paris St Germain
Juventus
Bayern Munich

Liverpool route to the final:

Sevilla
Spartak Moscow
Maribor
FC Porto
Man City
Roma

And guess what? We're unbeaten away against both and thrashed them both at home :)
