If you're saying it's a soft pen it means you're admitting it's a pen. You can dress it up all you want but it's a foul because the defender took the advantage away from the attacker unfairly.

Really disappointed with the reactions of people on here. So much bitterness coming from people who can't accept Juve beating Spurs in the last round, and allowing it to cloud their opinions. That was such a soft penalty, there was a hand on the back but it wasn't excessive and Benatia got the ball. Vasquez hit the deck the second he could hear Benatia come up behind him and the ref should never have called it. A big talking point at work and amongst my friends and I'm struggling to find anyone that thinks it was a stonewall pen. Quite a few 50/50's but not the levels of exaggeration on here. Apologies if this pisses people off but quite a few posters showing how fickle and bitter fans can be. If Real had knocked us out in the last round you just know it would be a complete reversal of opinion. It's also one of those where had it have been Spurs in Juve's position with those decisions people would be apoplectic and calling for Oliver's head.

Buffon was understandably frustrated, albeit probably too animated, but that's pretty standard for Italians to be so animated. A straight red for protesting for a man who has never been anything but a consumate professional and a gentleman of the game is incredibly harsh. If he said something untorwards then fair enough, but a straight red is over the top and Oliver lost his nerve.

It's frustrating for me as I've also been a Juve fan all my life and totally expect people on here to be one sided when it's Juve vs Spurs, but to see people carry forward the bitterness is disappointing. I genuinely wanted Spurs to go through, I've always been 60/40 towards Spurs in terms of my allegianeces and I really felt we needed and deserved it more. I really feel Spurs would've gave more against Real than Juve so that's a shame, but I guess that's football. Gutted to see both teams out but very proud of them both.

I wanted Juve to win but that was a pen all day. The only person to be blamed, if anyone should at all, is Benatia. Buffon let himself down with his reaction and deserved to see red. I wish more referees would stand up to aggressive players in their face.

Buffon says the referee "cannot destroy dreams like that, you cannot ruin the dreams of a team". Perhaps their dreams being ruined had less to do with the referee and more to do with losing 3-0 at home.
Buffon speaking about Roma and referees after a 2014 3-2 win:

“Winners find a way, losers find an excuse. It seems to me a motto that fits in well with everyday life as well as sport.

“I advise you not give life to excuses or alibis as mediocre people would, but on the contrary roll your sleeves up and get to work.”

Seems to me he should be taking his own advice. Juve players as a whole seem to be a bunch of crybabies. I'm no fan of Madrid but I'm glad they beat them in the most painful way possible.

I was annoyed that it was given, but it was a penalty. Benatia had already made two rash tackles prior to that. The person at fault was Allegri, who a) didn't press for the win and b) decided to hang on for extra-time when it was clear that his team were tiring.

That's just total bollocks. You don't sign for Juve for being average. He was a beast for Roma and if Wenger had half a brain, he would have kept him at Arsenal. Gooner bias aside, Szczęsny is a fantastic goalkeeper. I don't like him personally, but you can't deny him talent. He was brought in as Buffon's successor.

It was delicious that he was the one in goal for the penalty. Chin up, Wojtek!

I have nothing but respect for Juve and certainly ain’t bitter about them beating us but that was a penalty all day long and twice on a Sunday.

In the first half Juve got a free kick just inside their own box when one of their players stooped down to head the ball and real kicked the ball off his head( no contact made) so I am guessing high feet?

If that was given as a foul then I can see it being a penalty, boot came round and got the ball but up near his head and a nudge in the back imo.... Enough for a foul to be given.

If we had been in Real's situation and that wasn't given, we'd be fuming. Yes, it was soft but it was a penalty.

Couldn't care less if it was for or against Juve, it was a clumsy.

watched it again - its a pen. Vazquez wasnt going down before contact - he leaned forward to chest the ball down to his feet and then Benatia ran him down from behind.

It was a penalty, just, and Buffon’s behaviour to the referee was pathetic and disgraceful. At his age you’d hope he’d be able to control himself but instead puts his team at a further disadvantage by getting himself sent off.

Criticism of Oliver is shocking. I wonder if the referee who gift wrapped Barca’s comeback against PSG is going to the WC?

That's how I'm seeing it as well.

I reckon the same people who are saying it's a 'stonewall' penalty would be up in arms if it was given against Spurs.

I understand why it was given, and I think looking at it again it probably is a penalty, but to say it's clearly a penalty is nonsense, particularly as the guy was going down before there was any contact.

I don't feel sorry for Juve at all, and I think they were lucky not to have more players sent off for that reaction to the penalty, but it was definitely a soft one.
I said in this thread that I really wanted Buffon to win the CL before the incident occurred, and I still thought it was a nailed-on penalty. I would be very disappointed in our players had we reacted like that to a correct decision.

It's one of those where the replay makes it look less of a foul than it actually is because it takes away the speed of the players coming together. There is for me no doubt at all that Benatia runs into Vazquez causing him to lose his footing, and doesn't play the ball at all. There is no scenario where I would argue that that sort of coming together isn't a penalty.

He got clattered from behind by a defender he didn’t know was there? What exactly else was he going to do but fall over?
And Benatia tried to wrap his leg around Vasquez's neck for good measure. From behind, of course.

What I have witnessed of Juve's defending these last few months is extreme cynicism and absolute filth. They kicked and dragged our boys all over the place. Could not give a fiddler's for them, and nice to see Chiellini's barb about us rammed down his throat. How about his match-fixing gesture, too? Classy.

Sergio Ramos may face another suspension because of his actions during the game last night. Spotted in the players tunnel during the last minutes of the game. Surprised he wasn't escorted by the 4th official to the stands. Stood there and gesticulated towards the ref also

BRAVO!!!
Pretty much sums up what I'm feeling.
However I've stepped on so many toes here, that defending Juve is a battle I'm not about to pick.

It’s a clear penalty. And no I wouldn’t be up in arms if it was given against us, I’d be annoyed at whichever defender was stupid enough to stick two arms straight out into the back of the player.

Lost a lot of respect for Buffon after all of this. Things don't go his way and he's wound the clock back to being a 5 year old. I understand the reaction on the field even thought it was well worth a red but to continue personal attacks on the ref in the media afterwards is pathetic for anyone let alone someone of his experience and supposed character (n)

How is this a debate? Clear penalty.

It's the way Vazquez's eyes light up when Benatia crashes into him that sells it for me. It's a reaction that shows surprise and loss of control, and it's extremely hard to fake a natural reaction like that. I really don't understand how people can argue it wasn't penalty as it's clear that Benatia doesn't touch the ball before he's upended Vazquez.
