Chelsea have reportedly reached agreement with the advisors of Carlo Ancelotti for the Milan coach to take over at Stamford Bridge.

Milan revealed at the weekend that they had rejected a request from Chelsea to speak with the Italian coach. However it seems that they have held successful talks with Ancelotti"s representatives.

The Blues, owned by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, are seeking a coach to replace Avram Grant, the Israeli boss sacked despite leading the club to the final of the Champions League.

The other frontrunner for the job was Blackburn manager Mark Hughes, who has since agreed a deal to manage Manchester City next season.

According to reports, Abramovich offered Ancelotti a four-year contract and £70 million war chest for new signings on Monday evening.

Despite winning two Premier League titles under new Internazionale coach Jose Mourinho - who was sacked in the early stages of the season, leading to the installation of then director of football Grant - Chelsea failed to previously reach the final of Europe's premier club competition.

Having made it to the final in Moscow this year, they were within one successful penalty kick of a famous triumph when captain John Terry slipped and missed.

Ancelotti has pedigree in Europe, having twice won the European Cup as a player with Milan and going on to lift the same Champions League trophy with the Rossoneri in both 2002-03 and 2006-07.

He has also won numerous domestic 'Scudetti' league championships and several Coppa Italia titles, as well as the UEFA Cup as a coach with Parma in 1998-99.

However, a disappointing season in Serie A saw Milan fail to qualify for the Champions League after they finished fifth.
He has never previously played or managed outside Italy.
