For all the negatives, he has a very good scoring record and knows where the back of the net is. Would he be such a bad signing? Could he offer a better immediate alternative to VJ? Could he play along side Kane too?

I think he's not a bad option.

I know things change in football, but Benteke said earlier in the summer whilst he was being linked with Everton that he would stay at Palace this season with it being a World Cup year.

We shouldn't be buying anyone just because he is an upgrade on Jannsen.....if thats the case we could buy almost anyone.
Surely the pertinent part of my comment was 'better upgrade', implying that I felt this guy, if within our well know strict budget, not only improves our options but do so more than anyone else well known who I believe is gettable.

The alternative would be a gamble, just like Janssen a year ago, which could easily end up no different to Janssen.

My point being, if we are to give up on Janssen then a premier league proven 26 year old who has been in this league scoring regularly for over half a decade would represent significant improvement.

The fact Liverpool let him go because he didn't suit their system should mean we avoid. His whole game is based on aerial strength and hold up play. He has limited work rate and that's why he signed for palace which is his level. The fact they might sell says it all...

All I'm saying is that he's a good goal scorer in the league who offers us something our squad lacks, so I would not be outraged if @Hercules itk is true as he's a player I'd be confident in doing what we need.

As if he will be happy to bench warm anyway, and he gets 130,000 grand a week and he is a pony.

We need Pace.....and a player who can play wide as well as cover for Harry when needed.

A Salah..Marne type

Salah and Mane don't have the hold up play to cover Kane. A number 9 (if we sell Janssen) AND a wide player is what we need, or keep Janssen and get a wide man.

Sorry, not to cast aspersions on the info - but I absolutely refuse to believe that we are after Benteke.

Not because I think he's shit, it just wouldn't make any sense whatsoever from a wages, cost, age, workrate standpoint.

He might not think playing in next season's championship is right for him in the prime of his career...

Also, we have work rate and youth in Janssen, if Pochettino really doesn't trust him then surely premier league proven scoring ability is the antithesis to this?

I've started this thread and quoted you all in here because I don't want to be banned.

100% this.

I remember this, but getting relegated might not help his World Cup chances.

In 157 premier league games, including a season of being on the Liverpool bench, this chap has scored 66 league goals. That's a goal in every 2.4 games, over a spread of several season, as first choice for two relegation battlers and a bench warmer for a 2nd tier side. If this guy falls within our price range, with this level of pedigree in the Premiership, I struggle to think of a better realistic upgrade on Janssen.

@Breezer did also comment on this in the ITK thread but it's been buried. His comment was something along the lines of how it would seem highly unlikely due to Benteke being a top earner there how important he is to Palace. It's worth searching for.

Also @Hercules did also pop back into the thread and said it was more just an enquiry from us, didn't mean we had bid for him etc. Again in the ITK thread but it's probably been buried in there.

For loads of reasons this one doesn't make any sense...and why would they sell in the last few days of the window after their crappy start to the season.

Would be a pointless signing, too similar to Jansen. We need someone with pace.

Jesus some if the comments in here are deluded.we aint stoke.in what world would this be a good signing. Benteke isnt getting in the team ahead of kane.isnt young and hungry.isnt on a small wage and hardly seems like the sort of player that would thrive on a minute here and a minute there like janssen has had to make do with.has no pace or resale valve.no team he has ever been with has been successful.would be an equally bad deal as sissoko.

Palace bought him for £30m and so would likely want the same again. Therefore its a no from me.

We need someone with different qualities than Kane. We need a pacy, technical player- someone who can offer something completely different. We sort of made that mistake when signing Janssen (he doesn't bring anything new to the table) - lets not make it again.

What we need is a fit and healthy Daniel Sturridge.

So...we want until the last few hours of the window...so that the Benteke apple can fall into our laps

Genius strategy
