Christian Eriksen has reached an agreement in principle with Tottenham over a new £22.9million contract, Football Insider sources understand.

The attacking midfielder, who scored the winning goal against Manchester City on Sunday, has indicated to the club he will commit to a deal that will lift his salary to £80,000-a-week and run until 2021.

Eriksen’s current £60,000-a-week agreement has two-and-a-half years left but Spurs are keen to reward his status as one of the team’s most important players.

A Tottenham source has told Football Insider that talks have been taking place for months about an extension and all parties are now confident that an agreement is in place.

Eriksen was the subject of strong interest from Manchester United last summer but Spurs had no desire to cash in on a player who has been key to their resurgence under Mauricio Pochettino.

He celebrated his 24th birthday by scoring his fifth Premier League goal of the season on Sunday when he scored the 82nd minute winner for Spurs in their 2-1 triumph at City. Eriksen has also weighed in with nine assists in the competition for the second-placed Premier League team.

The Denmark international, who was recently crowned Danish Player of the Year for a record third consecutive year, signed a five-year contract when he arrived from Ajax for £10million in the summer of 2013.

Speaking last month about the possibility of a new deal, Eriksen told Danish broadcaster TV 3 Sport: “We are talking [about a contract], so it is coming, yes. Well, it looks positive.”

In other Tottenham news, Sky pundit Jamie Carragher has claimed Pochettino’s managerial performance this season will go down as the greatest in Premier League history if Spurs go on to win the title.

Vesey's decent iirc, so probably legit.

£80k a week. With the new tv deal coming in that is a good deal for spurs.

Tie all the boys down and try and add a couple in the summer.

Don't see why not, he may not always make the highlight reel but I think some of the work he does keeping the ball moving is essential to the way we play.

Good news, very important to us in general play and his goals and free kicks are nice to have. Having said that can we insert a "I must stop being a pussy" clause where he gets deducted a few grand each time he pulls out of a tackle, happens every game. Man up Christian!

Good news, what flummoxes me is the kind of ball he received from Eric yesterday is one that I expect to see more from Christian.

Still he knows where the goal is and finishes like an assassin.

You got some statistical evidence to back that up?

Was going to post exactly the same, pretty sure Eriksen and Lamela had the same length contract and he certainly deserves one. Obviously Poch needs a new one one as well.

Yeah, all the current squad deserve something, it is a proper unit!

Eriksen has two-and-a-half years to run on his current contract and can see the direction they are headed under Mauricio Pochettino and wants to remain part of it.

‘We’re still talking about the contract. It’s all positive,’ Eriksen said. ‘I think everyone can see that I can fulfil my ambitions here.

‘We’re doing a really, really good job. I’m just enjoying the moment.’
