It pisses me off that Lamela is having an atrocious season because relying all our impetus on Eriksen is going to lead to burnout. When Eriksen plays well we play well - but he's young, he's going to be inconsistent, we really do need another avenue of attack. Can't keep relying on just him, good as he is.

"Atrocious" is a ridiculously strong word to use.

Lamela was probably one of our best players in the first 10/15 games. He's been poor the last 8/10 but hardly atrocious. Eriksen was poor himself for the first 10/15 so what does that tell you? And if anything we are relying on Kane, not Eriksen.

Eriksen has not been poor at any time in his career at THFC. He was weak in the tackle and not very fit last season and has improved that this season. But all the time he has been scoring goals and making assists and winning us games in the EPL.

I strongly disagree with this. The first chunk of this season he was bordering on terrible. He has improved markedly recently though, so props to him for that. Last season he was mostly very good to excellent.

I'm sure if Eriksen does get injured or burns out, Lamela will step up if he is played in the no.10 role for a run of games.

One thing I love about Eriksen now, compared to earlier in the season, is that he looks MUCH fitter. I understand that Eriksen might not be very happy with Poch playing him out on the wing, but Poch has done wonders for his fitness. And that's something he will really benefit from when Poch (hopefully, at least) starts playing him more centrally.

Eriksen himself said he likes to play as left winger or left sided midfielder .... his best performance always comes when he plays in that position .... Most of the time frank de boer always used him on that side of the field

Hmmm. It's not that strong.

After the first handful of games, where he looked like a proper player (but still not in the same league of effectiveness as Eriksen or even Chadli), he's gone completely off the boil.

If he carries on like this, I'd say he's had an atrocious season.

If he continues grabbing assists at the rate he has this season then you won't be able to say the word "atrocious" without coming off as acutely hyperbolic.

Atrocious is meant as a relative term.

For an Argentinian international attacker (and it's not easy to get into that team in his position) who has proven quality at a very high level, for whom the club paid top whack, his current level of performance is atrocious.

He needs to get scoring. It's that simple. Chadli and Eriksen have got six PL goals each already this year. Lamela hasn't got a single one.

when was his last assist? at his seasonal rate he should end up with about 10, at his current rate he'll probably end up staying on four. even if he were to manage 10, an assist counts for a single moment in a game, he could still be atrocious for the rest of it like he has been for the past couple of months. good stats doesn't mean good performances.

I'd like to see Christian in a midfield 3, like the OP from months ago (1st choice/second choice):

---------------------- Lloris -----------------------

Walker --- Fazio --- Vertonghen --- Davies

------------ Bentaleb/Stambouli --------------

--- Mason/Paulinho ---- Eriksen/Dembele ---

Lamela ------------ Kane ------------- Chadli

I think playing in the 10 role for him hasn't worked out great in the past - he needs a bit of freedom, and bit of help around him. He's only 22, yes he's very experienced but he's also very lightweight. I've noticed he's at his best when he's closely supported by other players he can play one-two's with and who can support him with the physical battle.

I think him, Mason and Bentaleb in a midfield three, with Mason and Eriksen getting forward and looking to create, whilst also working to drop back and help Bentaleb, could work well. Frankly you could also bring back Hotby and put him in either of the forward positions as perfect cover as well.

That would give the likes of Lamela and Chadli more freedom to actually attack, which is what we bought them for and what they're good at, rather than saddling them with too many defensive duties as we do now. Lamela in particular isn't a right midfielder as we keep playing him, he's a wide forward who should be in and around the opposition box, not defending on the edge of ours.

Personally I think this system would play to the strengths of the players we've got, as well as being an effective system in principle anyway. Which is why I blatantly post it in every thread :playful:
