I hate stories like this. As a parent I couldn't begin to understand why a Father would take his own life (like Gary Speed etc..)
I know depression is crippling but I don't understand it at all. Just find it incredibly sad to be honest
I've suffered from depression, on and off, for about ten years. It truly is horrible. I have never been so low that I would consider taking my own life but I can will imagine how things get to that stage for some people. I hope he can find some peace and contentment and that he gets the help he deserves. Very sad.

Take care this Christmas fellow Spurs.

I've never understood why anyone would involve someone else in their suicide, it's not right to put truck/train drivers in that position and the same goes for "suicide by cop" or even doing it in a way that will leave a mess that anyone could find and will need to be cleaned up. If someone has good enough reasons to end their own life then fine, it's their decision, just do it with a bit of dignity.

I hope he recovers and realises that his family are better off with him than without him, this would have ruined their Christmas every year.

Is there anything out there to substantial that this was actually a suicide attempt? There is no mention in the media of this. Are people putting two and two together based on his previous battle with depression and the documentary he was in?

The local newspaper was reporting it early on, before anyone knew it was Clarke Carlisle.
I would also imagine the lorry driver will have provided relevant information to police.
I don't think we will find out for certain if it was a suicide attempt, but I find it incredibly unusual for someone to just be walking along that stretch of road at that time in the morning.

That's kind of what I gathered from this thread.

If he does become 'crippled for life', it would almost be worse in a sense. It would also make me even more pro-Euthanasia, if he still felt like he no longer wanted to live.
Some people who are crippled manage to make great lives for themselves.
He's only 35, he has a wife and three children so he has a lot to live for.
He's battling depression and it's a life long fight really, ongoing treatment is needed, I don't think euthanasia is the answer for people in that type of situation and condition.

If true...The best way for him to deal with depression is to ruin someone else's life and push them towards depression in the driver's case.

One of my drivers was a victim of this type of incident last year and is still trying to get over it following numerous counselling sessions.

So if he does get better hope he realises what a selfish idiot he has been but he won't be getting any sympathy from me.

I'll reserve judgement for the time being, but if it was a suicide attempt potentially endangering other people's lives too I feel no sympathy.

For now, I wish him all the best and hope he pulls through.

I think you're making an assumption that people at the very depths of depression are able to empathize and make rational decisions. The preferred wording often goes along the lines of 'while the balance of their mind was disturbed'. Judgement and other considerations go right out of the window when people get this low. My sympathy for anybody experiencing this is guaranteed, no matter what.

Japhet, your first sentence is absolutely spot on. Nobody knows for sure what happened at this stage, but if this is a depression - related incident then personal choice (in the sense that non - depressed people understand it) may not have come in to it.

Best wishes to Clarke & his family, & also to the driver & his kin. Very sad all round.

His book is a great read (seriously, check it out, absolutely superb), and he has always impressed me with how he handles and articulates himself in the media. He talks at length about his depression and previous suicide attempts in his book and he admits to not knowing whether this is something that will come back to haunt him. Hope that his demons haven't lead him astray again, and he makes a full recovery.

And although it seems disappointing that this thread should be the place to say it, I think he is a good colour commentator, with his naff jokes, application of personal examples and genuine enthusiasm over riding the Townsend-esque dull clichés or the Alan Smiff gooner bias

Get well soon champ

Former footballer Clarke Carlisle was charged with a drink-driving offence days before he was seriously injured when he was hit by a lorry, it has emerged.

The 35-year-old was struck by a lorry on the A64 near York on 22 December and remains in hospital in Leeds.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed he was charged with failing to provide a sample on 20 December.

He is due to appear at Highbury Corner Magistrates' Court on 20 January.

Mr Carlisle, who played for teams including Burnley, Queens Park Rangers, Leeds United and Northampton Town, was also the chairman of the Professional Footballers' Association.

His wife Gemma wrote on Twitter on Monday that he was "still very poorly but we're hopeful he'll make a full recovery" and thanked well-wishers for their support.

Takes some serious balls 1. to jump in front of a truck but then 2. to survive and 3. to come out and talk about it so publically.

I'm assuming that talking about it and giving a full account of what happened and the time leading up to the suicide attempt is part of the therapy.

Very sad how alone depression can make people feel. I think his wife's tweet saying "It’s a serious illness where your world & reality are warped." sums it up for me. Glad he's on the mend - hope he can move on from this. It certainly make you think of the ones who don't.

Well, going by Ralf Littles account Carlisle seems like a dick.

But obviously I hope he gets better for his kids sake.

It's so sad, he's an intelligent man suffering with a terrible affliction. It's impossible to really understand depression unless you suffer with it yourself. Mental illness is something you can't see easily except for the body language which isn't obvious to most people, not like a physical illness or condition.

I hope he can come through this.
