Benfica coach Fernando Santos said Friday he wants defender Ricardo Rocha, who has reportedly sparked interest from English Premiership club Tottenham, to stay put at the Lisbon-based club.

"Obviously a player who regularly starts for Benfica is not considered to be available for a transfer," he told a news conference when asked about the reports linking Rocha to a move to Tottenham.

"But these issues are decided by the club's management, not by the coach. My job is to prepare the team technically."

Benfica's international striker Nuno Gomes also weighed in, telling reporters it would be better for the club if Rocha stayed.

"If he leaves that is life for a footballer but if he stays it is Benfica who wins," he said.

Earlier this week Portuguese media reported that Tottenham have offered Benfica five million euros (6.5 million US dollars) for Rocha, who has said he would welcome a move to the English Premiership.

Benfica issued a statement denying it was holding talks with Tottenham or any other club regarding the 28-year-old player while a Tottenham spokesman refused to confirm or deny the press reports.

Rocha joined Benfica in the summer of 2002 after spending time at Portuguese sides FC Famalicao and SC Braga. He is under contract with the club until 2010.

The player has scored three goals in 12 appearances for Benfica this season and also has three Portuguese caps.

As I wrote yesterday on another thread, in reply to gloryglory's mystification:

Come into the real world, man. No one, but no one, just offers the asking price. Never. Unless they're about to be relegated and are absolutely desperate (Portsmouth last year, West Ham this year). Not even Chelski just offers the asking price.

It's bad business, it makes you look like a chump and, worst of all, it sets up the rest of the world to think you're a soft touch for the next 5 years.

    You're just being impossibly naive.

They want 3.9 but were offering 3.2
    Wheres the 10mil in that?
Were desperatly short at the back, we have identified this guy as the solution, no? and here we are arguing the toss over 700.000.

David, youre the one being "impossibly naive" and guilty of not reading my posts correctly.

For arguments sake, lets say villa said barry wasnt for sale but we see him as the answer to our left sided problem, we offer Villa say 8m, they reject it but say we'll take 12... my point is, say ok herre's the 12 and thats that.

SWP, Shev to name two they paid the asking price for, Man u stumped up for Carrick, i gota go work or i'd reserch and prove you wrong some more.

David, when i read your posts sometimes you make good points but a lot of the time your correcting people on their opinions as though you have the devine right to be right.

I have said many times that we shouldnt throw stupid money away and that if their valuation exeeds ours then we should leave it and move on but you obviously didnt bother to read tha bit.

    Laters.

Sky Sports reckons that a €10m deal has been agreed (probably after an intervention by StokeSpur, but Sky were a little shy on that point) and that the club President will make the decision tomorrow about whether Rocha can leave.
Sounds like he'll puff his chest out to feel important and then say yes.

Yesterday will hopefully have been a real eye-opener for everyone - we were outplayed by Fulham when they had 11 and 10 men. Dawson and Gardner really couldn't cope with McBride/Helguson/Montella. It also seems to me, that Dawson is very liable to go to pieces unless he has King beside him.

A CB has to be a priority now, Rocha has experience so hopefully, if he signs, he can help tighten the backline up as it has been (all year so far) a complete mess.

I'm also starting to think we'll have to sign another CM, we're constantly getting over-run in midfield away from home. IF Reo-coker was available, I'd get him. If this doesn't develop, we may as well wait for JJ to get fully fit and see if can help our SHOCKING away form.

What is this Rocha like?? Gardner looked lost yesterday...

David, why have u not replied to stokespur?

Bollocks. I'm so tired of this tired argument that I could tear what's left of my hair out.

How many time are people going to post variants of "everyone has a right to an opinion" (which is what you are basically saying in different words) before it occurs to them that no one has ever suggested that people don't have a right to an opinion?

If someone has an opinion that I think is nonsense and I say so, it does not, in any way, suggest that I don't think they have a right to an opinion or that I "have a divine right to be right".

I probably change my mind more than anyone else on this board. If someone else has an opinion that's better than mine, mine goes straight down the drain, 'bye, gone. Opinions are temporary visitors, unless one has a rigid mind, which I certainly don't.

But I generally think before I formulate an opinion. That doesn't guarantee that I'll be right, But it increases the chances considerably. Quite a few other people here also think before they post. And occasionally even change their minds. They tend to be the same people. You won't find me being scathing about their posts, even (especially) when I disagree with them. Because that kind of disagreement sparks off an interesting debate.

The same cannot be said of some of the half-digested, impetuous, memory-like-a-goldfish, usually angry nonsense that people bung up on this board and then dignify with the title of an "opinion".

    They aren't opinions, they're reactions. Knee-jerk reactions.

Worse are the people who latch on to their initial reaction, decide that it's their "opinion" and then fossilise it into ironclad fact within minutes. Nothing thereafter, especially not evidence, can ever convince them that (for instance) Jermain Defoe is not a selfish git or Andy Reid is not fat.

Again, that isn't an "opinion". It's more like a dogma.

P.S. OK, adamsilver, I replied. Is that one good enough?

Im with you on this one stoke spur, if they rate this guy they should buy him and stop fuckin about, otherwise one of our rivals might sneak in and take him,
  10. adamsilver
Thanks, i enjoy the arguing on here!

    You're a mischievous bugger.

Egging other people on to be contentious and then :violin: as Rome burns.
  12. StokeSpur
    Yawn...

You cant see the bread for the prawns David.

If we find a player that will solve a problem then we should pay the asking price and get him in, is that so wrong? Do you know how important it is that we qualify for europe again to be able to attract the type of player that will complement the likes of Berbatov and Zokora etc, If west brom want 12m for Davies and we see him as the answer to a problem and a future England player etc then pay em and dont start with "well we'll give you 11" etc, Why should we mess about haggling for the sake of a few quid, sounds like your happy with mediocrity, well i'm not, i want us to be pushing and winning things.

Very true as my old grandaddy used to say " Opinions are like arseholes, every one has got one ":hump:
  14. StokeSpur
    very good.
  15. DannySafer
Who is this guy? Maybe I've missed earlier posts but does anyone have any decent info? Is he any good?
  16. st@rbug
well yeh, he is soo good that spurs wont pay an extra 700k for him. Dunno about u, but im convinced ^^ .. sigh
  17. davidmatzdorf
Yes. Completely wrong. Disneyland wrong. Cloud cuckoo land wrong. No resemblance to the real world wrong.

Fan's-eye-view, not real world. Not multi-million-pound international football business world.

No one pays the asking price unless they are desperate and on their last legs. We are not desperate and we are not staring at relegation. We are building a squad and keeping a sound business sound. So we negotiate. Always. No exceptions.

Sometimes, the other side won't negotiate, so we have to pay more than we intended: Chimbonda. But even then, you string it out and run it right to the last minute before you decide whether to pay th asking price or pull out.

The most important question about this player is whether he is any good. He's 28 years old and has played in a few friendlies for his country. Portugal has admittedly a very good national side, but their leagus is nothing like as competitive as ours, yet we have sold a good young player for £3m and are spending the money, plus a little more, on a player who we will probabky have no resale value and who has never played in the premiership. I suppose for now we have to trust the professional judgement of Comolli and Jol and expect him to be better than Davenport and Gardner. It's certainly possible. Chimbonda was in his mid 20s before Paul Jewell noticed how good he was. I hope we buy this guy and are surprised at how good he is. I can just imagine the kind of "what they wanna buy this wanker for" posts that will start appearing if he's not the right man.
