Harry Redknapp will find himself on a collision course with chairman Daniel Levy over transfer funds if Tottenham qualify for the Champions League.

Boss Redknapp insists Spurs must seriously bulk up their squad if they hope to tackle Europe's elite competition.

But Levy will tell Redknapp he must sell players before buying this summer - despite the added burden of extra fixtures.

And even relatively modest Spurs transfer targets like West Ham's Scott Parker and Everton's Steven Pienaar could be beyond Redknapp's reach.

Levy has rubber-stamped transfer spending of £150million during the last three seasons and insists that there will be no major net spending this close-season.

But Redknapp believes if Spurs beat Manchester City and Aston Villa to fourth place they must invest or risk their Champions League tenure being short-lived.

Yet Levy, on behalf of Tottenham money man Joe Lewis, must consider the costs of the club's proposed new stadium, which is likely to come to at least £350m.

Another major consideration for Levy is that even if Spurs finish fourth, they will face a potentially tough two-legged qualifying tie just to reach the lucrative group stage.

And only if they win that, will they scoop up to £30m in TV and prize money.

The news Everton have slapped a £20m price tag on Pienaar won't help Redknapp's cause.

The 28-year-old wideman has been a sensation since arriving from Borussia Dortmund in a £2m deal in 2008 after a successful loan stint at Goodison.

Is Pienaar any better than we already have?

Is there any relevance in an article from the 'Birmingham Mail'?

Things look confusing seen from Birmingham.

We can easily raise £30m simply from selling unneeded players:

Hutton, O'Hara, Gio, Taarabt, Jenas, Keane

Im gonna hazard a guess that Levy and 'Arry havent talked this through at length yet. Securing the 4th spot first is all that matters at this time! Then the budget for next season can be looked at.

Has a single window gone by when Levy hasnt said we have to sell before we buy, only to then sign off on loads of spending???

Lots of quotes to back this up, so it must be true. Redknapp out!

Ofcourse we have to sell before we buy. Not because of a lack of transfer funds but simply that we need to trim the squad down. How many players did we have on loan this season?

    Hurr.

We have a decent squad as it is. It makes sense that we'll be planning on one in, one out for transfers.

Not over-burdened with quotes is it?

I'm sure we'll raise a bit by selling several players.

But we only really need a few signings. We already have Sandro. So it's more a case of who we can upgrade on this summer. Numbers wise, we have a big enough squad. Although maybe a few more youngsters get a chance to shine next season.

You can probably add Pav and Bentley to that list. Only because they will raise more funds.

Not saying we should sell all (or any) of them. But there is plenty of "value" in the squad should Harry think we need to tweak things.

For that reason, I am with Levy on this. We certainly have a strong enough squad as it stands - at least in terms of depth. I would say we are one, maybe two, real quality players short in our first XI. But then we have too much quality in our second XI (if we are realistic). So a couple of sales to fund one or two first XI purchases must be the way forward.

Wot a pathetic article typical brummies obviously written by a villa fan..... u can b sure levy n 'arry aint spoken about next season yet! simple thing is sell those that av no future all clubs do it. can c keano goin hutton goin jenas goin n altho i like him as a player o'hara will go i think after his anti spurs talk

Once again the deliberate exclusion of the word NET when refering to our spending.
  17. mawspurs
The problem is due to the fact that all the clubs in Europe will have to trim down to a squad of 25 next season there is going to be a flood of players on the market. So transfer fees will plummet except for the very best players who will have extortionate fees.

Get Stephen Ireland in. Won't cost the earth and will provide the goals from midfield that we're crying out for.
