Harry Redknapp will find himself on a collision course with chairman Daniel Levy over transfer funds if Tottenham qualify for the Champions League.
Boss Redknapp insists Spurs must seriously bulk up their squad if they hope to tackle Europe's elite competition.
But Levy will tell Redknapp he must sell players before buying this summer - despite the added burden of extra fixtures.
And even relatively modest Spurs transfer targets like West Ham's Scott Parker and Everton's Steven Pienaar could be beyond Redknapp's reach.
Levy has rubber-stamped transfer spending of £150million during the last three seasons and insists that there will be no major net spending this close-season.
But Redknapp believes if Spurs beat Manchester City and Aston Villa to fourth place they must invest or risk their Champions League tenure being short-lived.
Yet Levy, on behalf of Tottenham money man Joe Lewis, must consider the costs of the club's proposed new stadium, which is likely to come to at least £350m.
Another major consideration for Levy is that even if Spurs finish fourth, they will face a potentially tough two-legged qualifying tie just to reach the lucrative group stage.
And only if they win that, will they scoop up to £30m in TV and prize money.
The news Everton have slapped a £20m price tag on Pienaar won't help Redknapp's cause.
The 28-year-old wideman has been a sensation since arriving from Borussia Dortmund in a £2m deal in 2008 after a successful loan stint at Goodison.
