Spurs defender no closer to move says Pompey boss.

Portsmouth manager Steve Cotterill admits he is in the dark over the possible transfer of Kyle Naughton.

Championship strugglers Pompey have been tracking the Tottenham right-back for some time, as they look to secure a short-term move for the defender.

However, Spurs manager Harry Redknapp is reportedly keen to tie Naughton down on a long-term contract before allowing him to go out on loan.

Fratton Park boss Cotterill is not expecting a quick resolution to the situation, although admits he wants to see the player switch to the South Coast if possible.

He told The News: "I don't know what is happening (with Naughton). It's not down to us.

"Tottenham were in Germany last night so there will be no quick decision on that.

"It would be nice if it could happen, though."

Pompey's miserable start to the campaign continued on Tuesday night as they went down 4-1 at Crystal Palace.

They will look to arrest their current slump when they travel to fellow out-of-form side Sheffield United at the weekend.

Why should Naughton sign a long term contract? He isn't even near the bench.

Because the club and Harry obviously think he has a bright future. Sending him out on loan and he performs well will get other clubs sniffing around and he or his agent may get offered opportunities to move on. Spurs are just trying to protect their investment.

Presumably the club do not want him to leave on a free so they are refusing to let him go out on loan unless he signs. That is what happened last season with Dervite - he dug his heals in and refused to sign so the club made an example of him by sidelining him for the entire season.

Going by Corluka's from Harry probably thinks he would be better! Top Class RB in Jan please

We don't need a RB in Jan. We've already got Charlie, Kaboul, Hutton, Walker, & Naughton. Charlie is defo off form at the mo but he'll come good after a spell on the bench and getting 100% fit. He looks to be carrying an injury. Would like to see Hutton given a run in the team to either nail down his squad place or show himself in the shop window for a move in Jan. The 2 Kyles are valuable backup squad players who can cover both fullback roles and I can see them getting their opportunity during the coming busy months.
