Could actually winning the PL, spell the beginning of the end?

This isn't a negative post, just something I was thinking about.

If we actually win the PL. I could see Harry taking the England job, because it wouldn't get any better at Spurs. You could argue the Champion's League, but how often do English teams win it, and how many years would it take for a soon to be 65 year old manager to achieve it, if ever?

The main fear I have, would be our players suddenly thinking - "if we're title winning players, we deserve to be on the money players at other title winning clubs are on". Players at Chelski, Pool could be languishing in UEFA cup places earning three times the money.

This coupled with Redknapp taking the England job could create a "it doesn't get any better, what an epic season, but it's time for pastures new" mentality. Would our big players really want to play for a new manager, on lower wages than all their peers, when they've already achieved the holy grail? Even if Redknapp stayed, would the Premiership winning Star players be happy on £50,000-£70,000 a week?

Of course, I dream of us winning the Premiership, and want that above all else - but I'm just looking at the big picture objectively. Thoughts?

Same thing will happen even if we finish 3rd. This could be the best chance we get to win the league before the sharks circle in the summer.

Or no, because we'd get Mourinho and keep everyone, then have a queue of people wanting to join us, starting with Sneijder.

Only Spain have had more winners in the last 8 years with 3, then england and italy with 2, and in those 8 years there have been 7 english teams in the final. So English teams do well in there. And as for how long would it take for him to win it, didnt last year show that we got very far, and with improvments we have made, who says we couldnt have got futher this year.... and who knows next year!

It won't be the beginning of the end, rather the end of the beginning.

Yes. I hope we don't win it.

:hump:

Okay, Niccolò, firstly, I do understand what you are saying. And, up to a point I agree.

I said the other day, on a different thread, that we will probably have a better chance of winning the EPL this year than next, even if we keep our team together - unless Citeh's riches are nullified, somehow, or we get a mega-rich owner splashing the cash.

That is where our conjectures diverge. With CL money, and a new stadium on the horizon, plus the kudos of winning the EPL, we would be very attractive and still rising. The thread I alluded to was about Modric leaving, and even doing that, we would have all of this plus a huge wedge of cash to invest in exciting young players. I don't think we would go on to dominate the EPL in the way that United have, but I certainly think our long term progress would continue. I think you need to pay more attention to the time, money and effort Levy has put into the youth seet-up and the trainig facilities.

I get what your saying, if we do win the league then I can see Harry leaving because I think he may feel that its the perfect way to end his managerial career at club level. He may though want another crack at the Champions League, hard to tell.

It certainly wouldnt be 'the end' though if he did go, as SP points out, we have a lot of good things happening at the club and are well set up going forward into the long-term.

We'd have more chance of things going tits up if we fail to bring success because we have highlighted our talent now and is we don't back that up with some tangible success the big fish will swoop and we will be unsettled and picked apart (there has to be at least 6 players in our team that most teams in the world would like to have playing for them)

Depends on what we do after this hypothetical situation happens.

Any of our players wanting to leave would be on a high point and their value would be temporarily high.

Many ambitious managers would be lining up to manage us. If we pick the right manager and reinvest intelligently we could become a very big deal.
