Spain's prosecutor's office in Madrid said on Tuesday it had filed a lawsuit against Cristiano Ronaldo for allegedly defrauding Spanish authorities of €14.7 million between 2011 and 2014.

In a statement, the prosecutor's office said Ronaldo had knowingly used a "business structure" created in 2010 to hide his income in Spain from his image rights.

This involved a "voluntary" failure to comply with his tax obligations in Spain, the statement from the office's economic crimes section said. The accusations were based on a report from Spain's tax agency, it said.

Real Madrid declined to comment and calls to the agency representing Ronaldo, Gestifute, went unanswered.

Prosecutors alleged that Ronaldo had defrauded the tax authorities of €1.4m in 2011, €1.7m in 2012, €3.2m in 2013 and €8.5m in 2014.

Ronaldo, who is from Portugal, became a Spanish tax resident in January 2010 and in November 2011 opted to follow the Spanish tax regime that applies to foreigners working in Spain, the statement said.

They seem to be targeting a number of global names like this relating to 'unusual' business structures and image rights.

If there's genuine wrong doing, he'll pay a small portion back and get a suspended sentence, nothing more. I'm sure this goes on all over the planet from a sports star/athlete perspective

The thing that seems odd to me about this case (and Messi's) is how they were allowed to build up such a value in dodged taxes over a period of time. Says more about the tax authorities than the people involved IMO.

It's just another case of someone rolling in money trying hard to fiddle away even more, a problem I wish I had.

Yeh I see these things with a headline name involved and a tax fraud .

I also noticed a recent news item from the EU where they said they were now going to consider action against what I consider to be the real criminals ....the tax accountants and financial advisers who devise these shady schemes .

Dumb football players/showbiz people faced with an expert who tells them he can avoid millions in tax by doing some 'perfectly legal' move are going to say ok of course and then pay these con men accountant/financial advisors fortunes .

Get the financial people who devise these cheating schemes and lock the fuckers up

The whole financial crash was orchestrated by sleazy financial skullduggery from these people . We have to start locking them away . At the mo there is no disincentive for them to stop fucking everyone over . We need one badly .

A source close to Cristiano Ronaldo has told BBC Sport that he has decided to leave Spain after being accused of tax fraud.

According to the source, "He's very sad and really upset. He doesn't want to stay in Spain. He feels he's honest, has good character and did everything ok, so he doesn't understand. At this moment he wants to leave."

And look at all the media outlets tripping over themselves to post this news.

If the Spanish authorities dropped the case, he'd be fine.. clearly this is what it is trying to do. Drop it or I'll leave.

I'd sell him if I was Real. This is probably the last season you could get a serious transfer fee for him.

Get rid and bring in Hazard and someone else.
