Peter Crouch last night looked set to join Tottenham Hotspur after the club finally agreed to match the terms offered to him by Sunderland and Fulham. Spurs have long been Crouch's first choice but only yesterday did they make serious moves for the striker.

Fulham have not yet given up hope of signing the 28-year-old England international but Sunderland, whose manager Steve Bruce met Crouch last Thursday, said yesterday they had withdrawn their bid of £12m. Spurs will have to match that amount if they are to make Crouch their first major signing of the summer.

Harry Redknapp's renewed pursuit of Crouch would suggest his first choice, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar of Real Madrid, is out of his grasp, with the Dutch striker seemingly heading for Stuttgart. Crouch's wages of £70,000 a week make him the top earner at Portsmouth and out of reach for all but a handful of clubs. Crouch signed associated schoolboy terms with Spurs at the age of 14, but left in 2000 for Queen's Park Rangers, without having been given a chance in the senior team.

This will be his seventh major move, plus one loan spell at Norwich, and it will be the fourth time he has played under Redknapp (at Portsmouth twice and Southampton). Bruce's fears over Crouch's willingness to relocate to the North-east were realised when the player informed Sunderland he would prefer to stay in the South.

Bruce had included Crouch among six key targets when he presented his wish list to Sunderland's chairman, Niall Quinn. The club had agreed a £12m fee with Pompey and personal terms with the player, whose agent Jonathan Barnett had rubbished claims he was looking for £90,000 a week, but could not seal a move.

"Naturally this is hugely disappointing for us as Peter was one of our primary targets," Bruce said. "I know he was impressed with the set-up here when he came for talks, but it's simply a matter of geographical location and that's not something we can affect.

"What's pleasing, however, is that it shows the intent of the club going forward that we are trying to bring in players of his calibre, and we will continue to pursue other targets.

"We have a number of irons in the fire at present and we will be looking to make several additions to our squad in the coming weeks."

Sunderland have been linked with the Spurs striker Darren Bent, a player they have previously tried to sign on at least two occasions and whose future at White Hart Lane appears limited if Crouch arrives.

Does anyone know why Keane wasnt playing!?

Injured??? Or Possibly on his way?????

If true and it looks increasingly likely, how dreadfully drepressing ............ the first step in Redknapps master plan to turn us into a mid table non entity of a football club.

Redknapp couldnt pull a quality top marque name if his life depended on it.

I really like Crouch. He always handles himself well, gentleman on pitch and off and his partnership with JD last season was great. I think this will prove a very good signing

Take it you weren't impressed when Defoe came back either then?
  5. Bilko
    Unbelievably bad news.
  6. Breezer
    Or Palacios!?
  7. The Original Yiddster
yep like Defoe but lets face it we were absolutely desperate for a striker when he came but he aint no world beater and it took about the same level of imagination and pulling power to sign him as it will take to sign Crouch actually less as Defoe was coming back to a club he knew well

Lets be honest dude, he's not impressed by ANYTHING! We could've signed Kaka and he'd find something negative to say about it

Him and MattC should have themselves a little love-in....although they way they respond to everything Spurs do in a similarly boring fashion, they could well be the same person.......now that's depressing!
  9. The Original Yiddster

congratulations another sparking generalisation without addressing the point - you excel at this!

Tell you what is depressing . . . your bloody comments on this website.

Stop whinging on about everything. It would be very interesting to see who you'd be signing if you were manager, Ronaldo, Tevez, Kaka no doubt. This isn't Champ Manager and we already are a 'mid table non entity of a football club'. Stop being so fickle and get behind the management and the team.

But what you're suggesting is that Redknapp's plan is to turn us into a mid-table "non-entity" team. Let's face it, we're not top 4 and we're not bottom 3 so anywhere in between could probably be classed as mid-table anyway. Without the likes of Defoe, Palacios, Chimbo and Keano we may not have had the run we did in the 2nd half of last season.

If it's looking like Bent is going, and who knows, behind the scenes that might be the case, then we'll need to replace him. Crouch has done more at international level than Bent and has more experience. I really dont think it matters that he's been changing clubs every 2 years because, let's face it, when he played for Saints and Pompey he was playing under Redknapp on all occasions.

I bet you're just really short and jealous.

You want me to address the point? I'd be happy to, the bottom line though is that you will just take the opposite view because you want to. Seemingly you enjoy arguing with people and can NEVER find anything positive to say about anything Spurs do, whether it be management, playing staff all the way down to the food served in the canteen.

I'll give you my view though, heck, what difference will it make. I think Peter Crouch is a proven player in the premier league, he has played for Liverpool and scored plenty of goals in big games against the best opposition. He is TOTALLY different in style to any other striker we have and he has a proven understanding with our key striker in Jermain Defoe.

His international record is fantastic and he is at an age where he is reaching the peak of his career. Now, would I prefer Negredo....probably...but he is FAR more of a gamble. Would I prefer Huntelaar....probably, but if he's going to Stuttgart, most likely cos of CL footy then at this point I see Crouch as the next best option.

    How's that?

love comments like this, you can always tell when schools out!

I honestly believe you get off on the fact that almost everyone on this site disagrees with you.

not bothered in the least because when I am at Spurs (sth entering my 25th year fyi) speaking to people on the ground, so to speak, they have vastly different opinion on most topics to most of the posters on here.

having said that, I think a large number of posters agree with me re Redknapp but even if they didnt could care less
  17. sebo_sek
    Or palacios.

TOY go support Man city - they have bundles of class signings. You wouldn't be disappointed as much.
  18. YiddArmy
    Why's that then?
  19. frosteye
Say what you like about TOY (and most of you do) but he does start some good debates/rows on this site....

Without him and David Matzdorf this site would be pretty quiet!
