I absolutely hate it when we go three at the back. It just doesn't work for us. We saw it against Chelsea and we have seen it again today. Utter confusion and lack of belief.

Three at the back does work for us when we have the correct personnel.

Like when we were fielding:

Dier Alderweireld Vertonghen

Walker / Trippier Wanyama Dembele Rose

Eriksen Dele

Kane


Problem at moment is you just cannot play Dier in front of a back three, it doesn’t work. Wanyama and Dembele though worked really well (arguably better than they did in a 4-2-3-1, which Dier is more suited to in our system).

Maybe if a duo if Winks, Skipp and Sissoko played it would have worked but not Dier.

Not slating Dier here, just observations from type of role he plays and has been shown he’s better when can sit back and at times slot in middle of back four rather than when sitting in front of a back three and is not so effective.

It also doesn’t help having right-footed KWP at wing back as inverted wing backs just don’t work,

Poch does make some daft choices sometimes, if he wanted to go gung ho he may as well have thrown the attack-minded Gegorgiou at left wing back in as at least he’s left footed and would have given us some width.

I like Skipp a lot, and I hope he's a real regular next season. But with Dembele going, Wanyama being finished and Dier being a terrible CM who's better at CB, we still need another player there.

The quality drops off drastically when the Fab Four are not playing. We need better quality cover for them.

Well I tell you what NOT to expect. A better defensive shape and resolve. Whenever we play 3 CBs we seem to do worse defensively.

Agree. Second half against Chelsea the only decent game playing three at the back in two seasons.

Yep, and any season where we do finish above Arsenal is satisfactory at least for me, so I'm not in out-and-out revolt mode as such yet. But just like Alan Patridge, this is a negative, Lynn, and right now I need two positives: finishing above Arsenal to cancel out the negative of the league cup semi-final exit, and then actually winning a pot, just so I can have a positive.
