This game did highlight one thing.

Winks is head and shoulders our best CM. The others are nowhere near, it’s a massive drop down in quality.

You may not agree with the strategy, but Levy is channeling his ambition into the stadium. That has an opportunity cost - investment in the squad.
The CL money should never be factored into the stadium debt, because it's not a guaranteed thing.

That money is effectively earned by the manager and his players and should be reinvested into the playing staff.

Yet we still have a near zero spend.

They were lucky to stumble across a decent manager that has worked wonders.
That manager has not been backed to win trophys.

Yup.

One extra factor of course is that Manager was happy to not be backed as he was told it wouldn’t happen until we’d built a new stadium.

I was actually the opposite - really gutted to go out in a semi-final, but oddly calm about losing today. Perhaps we were so comically bad today, that it took the sting out.

Had we advanced on Thursday then today's performance or set up might have been more forgivable. To go out Thursday and then again in the manner we did today is what is so frustrating.

Look how quickly Liverpool have gone from a 6th place club to competing for title and champions league final. All it takes is some gumption from the owners along with taking calculated risks on who you buy. It's possible we can compete in next 5 years with the foundations we currently have. However it's unlikely the investment will be made to see it come to fruition.
Bring me the oil money now then is my opinion. Cos Daniel ain't spending shit. And Liverpool haven't won Jack yet!

Sell for £2bn either to a) somebody who doesn't intend to invest all that much in the team, or b) someone to whom money is no object who has a different motive (e.g. Abrhamiovic wanting fame so he couldn't be disappeared by Putin, or the Sheikhs wanting to rehabilitate their reputation as generous football club owners rather than murderous fascist ****s).

Think you're probably right. Why Lewis has spent the last x number of years slowly building the club up in value with a view to sell for a huge profit is atounding!! He'll be dead sooner rather than later! So what was the fucking point?!!!!

Nope.

Bingo!

I know this is just going over old ground as far as this window is concerned but it's 100% true. Poch is happy with the squad and really hasn't been pushing for incomings. He has his extremely optimistic list and is more than aware they were unlikely to be brought in. The thing with the ITK's on here, and the other forums at least is that it comes from various different sources, some pro Levy, some anti Levy, some that have zero interests in the club what so ever. Believe me we all talk behind the scenes and everyone is hearing pretty much exactly the same thing regarding this, and have been for some time. Some of you can bury your heads in the sand and continue to blame Levy(don't get me wrong he has form) but our lack of transfers both now and in the Summer are not down to him. He's for once doing what we have all been asking for, for the last decade and backing the manager. I know, easier to do when he doesn't have to spend any money, but there is money available should Poch want to bolster the squad.

I'm all for having faith in the youth but lets be honest it would be far easier to blood them with real quality around them, rather than having to chuck them all in together when we are injury plagued, and lacking confidence.

Not sure if this should have gone in here, or if some of it should have been posted at all tbh but I'm sick of hearing "this is all Levy's fault" and "poor old Poch having to work on a shoestring" when as things stand it couldn't be further from the truth.
Well he needs to wake up.

I admire him for wanting to go with the youth but as you rightly state, it's a balance. Trying to compete on four fronts means that at some point you will need someone to step up when others are out, and expecting youth to be the ones who can step up is just naive.

We are now out of the two competitions we had any chance of winning and that simply isn't good enough or going to satisfy supporters in the long run. So, I think he needs to have a rethink and consider other players who may not be on his list. Plenty of players out there who could improve with his coaching and be an asset for us. If he doesn't wake up, he'll start to lose the goodwill he's worked so hard to get (not me personally).

Didn’t expect a good result today; disappointing, but I think we’re currently riding a negative wave. I truly believe the ‘project’ peaked earlier than expected and we’ve not been prepared financially/logistically for this sharp upward curve. My feelings are that in two/three years we’ll be there. 2nd year playing at Wembley; no summer squad investment and unfortunate injuries/Asian cup has halted our rhythm. We’ll be back.
And our rivals will standstill and wait for us to catch upto them?

It doesn't seem like Lewis has had to do very much at all. Levy runs the show (and owns 30% of ENIC, so stands to gain a lot from it!), for Lewis it's just another investment he can happily sit on and turn a profit from to pass onto his kids or whatever. It's almost free money to him.

So did Poch want Grealish?

Hope this was some sort of statement from Pochettino to the board. We clearly need 2-3 players in. Looked really poor today.
We do and you would think that it does look like some form of statement but what the problem seems to be is that the club can't stretch to the kind of players that Poch wants and he doesn't just want to add anyone. It does seem like that problem of being in the elite league but not being able to afford the elite players.

If you don’t invest in the squad you end up going backwards that for us means fighting the likes of West Ham, Everton ,Leicester etc for a 6th or 7th place finish. Good luck then trying to charge fans top dollar and selling out the stadium every other week to watch that.

another pointless season. another season closer to losing the decent players we currently have.

Walker, Dembele and soon Toby/Eriksen. The team slowly fading away and we're stuck with the mediocre players.

Won't surprise me if we in a couple of years look back at this squad thinking we wasted our chance ?

Sick of Lamela and that silly wobbly running style of his. Not quick enough for the PL and never will be.
Even though his wobbly running style has saved us on numerous occasions. Not fast enough for the PL? Thats utter crap, pity you probably wont realise it
