I've heard the rave reviews but not really observed many of Rose's Sunderland performances myself. Has he developed to the degree that he looks as though he would have a serious shot at usurping BAE as first choice left back? If not then I can't see him being here next season. Now that he's had a taste of regular first team action he won't want to go back to warming the bench.

Naughton could be cited as a counter point to that view, but his ability to cover left back as well as right means that he gets in a decent number of games regardless of not being a first choice. Rose is not a good enough in midfield to get many games there and so he'd be left solely reliant on Ekotto getting injured or badly losing form in order to get a run.

At least we should get a good fee for him if nothing else though.

He looks infinitely more comfortable and confident on the ball than he has previously for us. Defensively looks pretty sound too, even though with Johnson/McClean in front of him he doesn't get the most help a lot of the time.

One move today where he started with the ball, played a one two, and then got into the penalty area and had his cross turned over the bar by a last ditch interception saving a certain goal was I have to say as good a bit of play as you will see from a fullback.

If he carries on like this for a full season then he should be really good competition for Ekotto next year.

I don't think he's ever going to a great player but it was stupid to loan him out when we had no other fit LB at the club, even in the U21's. I'd rather he was playing there and Vertonghen was playing CB for the last three months.
As a Lw he was never going to be a great player as soon as he got his terrible injury but as a LB I think he can tbh, this is his first full season as a LB and you know what he is playing extremely well considering his team is struggling and doesnt look out of depth at prem level, for U21 or GB he looked better than Bertrand at LB who is getting call ups national team and he was the only one who against a great Brazil olympic team, to come out of the performance with their head held high

I'm as guilty as any of dismissing Danny Rose's prospects as a PL footballer, but has he turned a corner? I'm a regular on a Newcastle board, and they have consistently suggested that Sunderland's best player does not belong to them. Sunderland fans seem to feel he has done well too, but I have been unable to see any Sunderland games this year (bar a handful of highlights). So can anyone out there confirm - has he been developing as a fullback? Is a run in the position helping him, as it did Kyle Walker?

I'd love to welcome him back as a genuine squad player at LB (back-up for injuries/cups etc) but saw too many issues in his general play. I'd be made up if we had another homegrown defender on our hands.

I thought he done brilliantly when he tucked into left back. Looked pretty solid.

That goal against arseholes was fantastic too.

I always had high hopes for rose, gio, Adel, bostock and routledge but for some reason it just didn't work out. All exciting players on their day

Always defended him. A youngish player adapting to a new position. He's going to make mistakes. I guess he doesn't get a second chance unless Fryers really stinks up the joint in Belgium but I wouldn't mind it one bit.

It's not like he was the first name on the sheet FFS. People were tearing strips off him. Then again, a lot of Spurs are like that. Douches.

Sunderland fans seem to be saying its a toss up between Rose and Baines for the best LB in the league. Must be playing alright!

Watched the Norwich/Sunderland game yesterday and he played very well.
Not much of an accolade to say he was Sunderland's best player
but he looked composed and got forward very well.
My first thought was why did we let him go?
He looks more effective at left back than Naughton ( who looked happier at right back on Saturday)

i've watched them probably 5 times this season and he's always been one of their best players. very quick, very tenacious, closes down crosses, he's comfortable on the ball and is always looking to play it rather than hoof it, he has the ekotto "shift inside" move to get him out of trouble and he breaks forward well - yesterday, practically every sunderland attack started with him and he had two very good efforts on goal as well as almost putting the ball on a plate for wickham but norwich just about managed to clear it.

unless we're going to sign someone incredible(who?) to replace benny in a couple of years time then it would be daft to sell danny, he has everything to make it as a top full back.

Because he needs games for his development, especially as its only relatively recently that he got converted to a LB. Its crucial he plays week in, week out and we should benefit from this next season.

Granted, I haven't watched him this season but for us I always found him average technically and he constantly made poor decisions.Unless he has improved dramatically I don't see him unsurping BAE, so this loan will at least raise his value for when we sell him on in the summer.

But we've just had half a season of makeshift LBs! We have so many games now - I'd absolutely love to have two quality options at both LB and RB. With Adam Smith potentially coming through I'd be happier if we cashed in on Walker or Naughton.

Why are a few people so insistent that he would refuse to come back to play "second fiddle"? Has he said anything to that effect? Genuine question.

If any player in this day and age (and at a top club involved in so many games) still thinks like that, they need a kick up the arse. I'd be unhappy if we didn't have two players regularly competing for every position at this club. We have a shit-ton of games, and get a shit-ton of injuries. That's life at the top.
