Story on Rose:

The 22-year-old was brought in from White Hart Lane on a season-long deal in an attempt to fill the void left by Kieran Richardson, who left the Black Cats for Fulham during the summer.

And the England Under-21 international has impressed during his 12 league appearances in O’Neill’s side this year, and both the Northern Irish manager and Rose are interested in making the deal permanent.

"There is that possibility," the 60-year-old told reporters when asked whether the defender could stay beyond his current deal.

"He wants to remain at the football club and that is encouraging.

"If he went back to Tottenham, particularly with [Benoit] Assou-Ekotto getting fit again, the chances are he wouldn't play that often, so it's certainly worth a look at anyway.

"He would love to stay here. He's got on terrifically well with everyone. The players have taken to him, everybody has taken to him. Most importantly, the crowd have taken to him and rightly so because he has been absolutely outstanding.

"I always felt he had that potential, but he's playing remarkably well. He's been really excellent for us and he's improving as well.

"I don't really want to shout it out because we want to try to keep him at the football club, but Danny has been splendid ever since he arrived.

Rose started as a left winger before then Spurs manager Harry Redknapp trialled him in defence, but O'Neill believes he could have a future in the heart of midfield.

"As his fitness improves moving forward, you feel as though he is very capable of playing in that [midfield] position.

"We wanted to try him there beforehand, but he's been so decent at left-back that I didn't want to change him until he gets the requisite amount of fitness that you probably need to play in midfield. But he was excellent when he moved there."

So the options for Rose are :

1 Come back to Spurs - possibly as a replacement for Assou-Ekotto (probably only if BAE is sold)
2 Come back to Spurs as a squad player - back up LB, LW and CM - but at 22 still has a chance of makinmg it into Spurs first team on a regular basis or if he doesn't, then move onto another Premiership team (Liverpool, Sunderland etc)
3 Move to a Premiership side, maybe as early as January, but more liikely in the summer, netting Spurs £5m - £10m

Whichever, best of luck to Danny, and its good for Spurs whichever the outcome as we either get a player with decent (20 + games) Premiership experience who qualifies as a 'Club trained' player under UEFA rules (and most sides are short of these, including Spurs) or a wadge of money to spend to re-inforce other areas.

Can I have the same 'problem' for every young Spurs player please.:D

Another good game, looks confident in defence and on the ball going forward, we need to loan more youngsters out to a better level, even look at a team in the Dutch League that can't afford top players but plays good football, like a Dutch Swansea, Fulham etc

Danny Rose and becoming almost like a cult hero for Sunderland. Jesus, it's crazy searching his name in Twitter. He's got what would best be described as "Sandro Status" for Sunderland fans. Unbelievable.

Really weird hearing the whole crowd chanting Danny Rose's Name since he isnt really a Sunderland player, 3 months ago this board thought I was crazy when I said he was a better LB than Bertrand

He did come off injured today and more worryingly if he does come back for the next game he could potentially play with Titus Bramble:eek:

Wow, I'm amazed. Well done Danny. The last time I saw him he looked very average, but it sounds like he's made a massive jump according to the Sunderland fans. They're unanimous that he's a quality player. Better get him back quick. Still think BAE is class though, some people don't see it but I reckon he's one of the best in the league. How we could have done with Danny so far this season though.

Danny Rose has been phenomenal again today. Just had a beautiful tackle against Yaya Toure in the box. Then he broke up a counter by cutting off Milner to the ball. And about a minute ago he had a sliding block of a shot in the box. He's been absolutely rock solid in defense.

even for us, you could tell he loved a tackle. could be an evra type. avg height, but strong and quick, he loves to break forward as well. If he carries on like this, then we are in a great position.

@CaulkinTheTimes noted:

Villas-Boas on Rose:
"Permanent is completely impossible because we have big expectations for the player for the future. You know, what we think is that there's a high possibility his loan spell will continue, but we appreciate what he's been doing over here. It has been a massive experience, he's been extremely well managed, he's been man of the match in a couple of games and we can't give away a player of his qualities. Our idea, as a fact, as he's our homegrown product, is that he comes back to Tottenham next year."

Staying at Sunderland for the rest of the season.

Danny Rose will remain on loan at Sunderland from Tottenham for the rest of the campaign after Andre Villas-Boas allowed a recall clause to lapse. "The loan deal contained an option for Spurs to recall Danny this month, but they had to exercise that option by January 17," manager Martin O'Neill tells the Sunderland Echo. "I'm pleased to say that they haven't done so, so he will be with us for the rest of the season and that is really good news."

Thats good tbh, he has had two bad games so far this season and they were both against Liverpool, though he was apparently injured in both matches and missed games after these two appearances

Every reason to continue the loan - with luck he will have 30 odd games of PL football this saeason, plus games from the Olympic squad as experience and whether he stays at Spurs, or he goes to anothe4r club fior a decent fee, everyone should be happy.

If he came back to Spurs now I cannot see him getting many games - and if he's playing at Sundelland there is no point in sending him to another PL club for the last 15 or so PL matches.

Hope to hear more of him performing well for Sunderland.

Injured Sunderland loan star Rose sent back to Tottenham Hotspur.

Danny Rose has returned to parent club Tottenham Hotspur for treatment on the hamstring injury which has ruled him out of tomorrow’s trip to West Brom.

On-loan Rose re-injured his hamstring against Arsenal a fortnight ago, and although the strain is not as serious as the one which saw him miss a month of Premier League action at the start of the year, the 22-year-old still faces another couple of weeks on the sidelines.

Spurs have been keen to assess Rose’s problem and he will remain at the club’s Enfield training base before returning to Wearside next week.

Sunderland boss Martin O’Neill told the Jarrow and Hebburn Gazette: “Danny’s likely to be a few more weeks.

“I think it’s less severe than the previous hamstring problem.

“But because he’s on loan, Tottenham Hotspur get involved as well and they want to assess him.

“That’s quite right – he’s their player and they like to see what’s happening. He’ll come back to us on Monday.

“It’s one of the drawbacks to having loan players. The parent club feel as if they have got a call for him.

“I can’t disagree with that. Let’s say anything happens to Connor Wickham (on-loan at Sheffield Wednesday), we’d want to assess him ourselves.”
