David Button has joined Barnsley (Chamionship) on a months loan per OS

Hmmm Steele (Barnsley's keeper) is 27, has played 150 times for the club and was apparantly watched by the England team earlier this season. So on the face of it, Button goes on the bench unless Steele is injured (but nothing on Barnsley's fans sites to suggest that Steele is injured) - but not sure I understand why Spurs would send him on loan to sit on the bench ???!

It is a little strange one unless Steele has an injury they have been trying to cover.

With Gomes out injured as well, you would have thought Button would have been kept around unless guaranteed first team football was available elsewhere

Apparantly Steele, their no 1 goalkeeper is injured, but that was well covered up before yesterday. Wonder how long he is out for ?

Button conceded 93rd minute goal - but none of Barnsley's fans seem to blame him per their forums.

I high hopes for button. The fact that friedel and cudicini both have about 2 years left in them could work perfectly for him.

Button kept a clean sheet in a 1-0 win.

Barnsley said Steele will be out for 2 - 3 weeks which hopefully means Button can get a few more games in and Steele can recover more slowly !

Barnsley lost 4-0 at home to West Ham - catalogue of errors by the home defence, consequently Button had little chance with first two goals, made a mistake on the third, but only after a couple of errors by Barnsley defenders. Do Barnsley have the worst defence in that division - can't be fun playing behind them !

Barnsley want to extend Button's loan to end of the season (Steele their no 1 goalie still injured), he has played 5 games so far and (4 ?) more to the end of the season. Good news to get a few more games under his belt - with the Doncaster and Barndley loans combined he will probably be up to around 15 Championship games with a reasonable % of clean sheets - enough to prove he can hack the Championship.

He had a mere against West Ham last week, tried knocking it round the defender got caught out and lobbed. Other than that, I've not seen much of him.

So how good is this kid? Anyone seen him play?

In 2009/10 he was on loan at Shrewsbury League 2 (played 26 times) and he was compared favourably by fans to Joe Hart (now Man C) who had been on loan there previously and in 2010/11 he was on loan at Plymouth, League 1 (played 30 games) where again he was compared favourably to David Stockdale (now Fulham). At Doncaster (Championship) he played 8 times with 3 clean sheets and so far at Barnsley 5 times, 2 clean sheets - there are not that many goalkeepers on loan in Championship first teams.

Overall he stands a reasonable chance of becoming a Premiership goalkeeper - he's passed all the tests in the lower leagues.

There were 7 Barnsley players changed for the following match after the catalogue of errors on display from them.

Rather then splashing money on a younger keeper I'd like to see Button given a chance, Friedel will give us another season at least so would be good to give Button some bench time next season and games in the league cup to see how he fares.

Barnsley lost 3 - 1 to Hull. Fan Ratings :

Button 8, superb performance, saved us a right mauling.
Wiseman 4, looked out of his depth, short on confidence, poor positional play.
Foster 2, awful.
Collins, 5, best of a bad bunch in defence.
McNulty 2, thinks he's Baresi, he's not.
O'Brien 5, lots of effort, mainly trying to get the ball back after he'd given it away.
Perkins 5, bags of effort and leadership, no killer passes.
Doyle 4, maybe tried too hard, if he'd have been shooting at John Lennon, The Beatles will still be recording.
Cotterhill 4, Flattered to deceive, not one decent cross, can't remember him beating a man.
Gray 8, rans his nuts off, showed the others up.
Davies 5, followed Gray's example in the second half, but still poor.
Dawson 8 MOM, instilled some 'go forward' and passion, worked hard.
RNL 6, offerd more than Cotterhill.
Higginbottom 4, jury out, offered little.

Fans do not rate their defence, so Button is'nt getting much cover - which is good practice !

He needs a prem loan next season. If Swansea lose Vorm maybe they would be interested. Who to reading have in goal?

Great if he could get a Premiership loan but there have never been that many - I can only think of 3 in Premiership history (Hart on loan at Birmingham from Man City, Forster on loan to Watford from Man U and Forster at West Brom on loan from Birm).

if Birmingham win the Championship playoffs there is a potential opportunity at West Brom or Birm (Forster cannot play in both teams), but generally Premiership clubs have one or more decent recognised goalkeepers - Reading have an Australian international goalie plus an England under 21 goalie for example. Worth Sherwood having a chat with one or two Premiership sides to place Button but there are not too many clear options.

A solid Championship level loan with a club of mid-table/play-off standing would work if we can't get him a Premier League loan.

Sounds like he's progressing well though! Give him 10 years and he might displace the 50 year old Friedal between the sticks for us...
