David James wants a January move from Portsmouth to Tottenham to ensure that he goes into the World Cup finals as England's No 1 goalkeeper.
With the turmoil over Portsmouth’s ownership exacerbated by their poor start to the season, James is concerned that he could lose his national team place.
Harry Redknapp, the Tottenham manager, wanted to sign James in the summer but Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy refused to pay a big fee for a 39 year-old. However, a source close to the player insists that his desire to leave has hardened and that a deal is in the pipeline.
Tottenham have gained leverage over Portsmouth, which could help facilitate the deal. Spurs are still owed £2 million from Kevin Prince Boateng’s move to Fratton Park. It is understood that the Tottenham hierarchy are concerned that Portsmouth have spent money hiring Avram Grant as director of football and talked up recruitment in January while their debt remains unpaid.
Tottenham would still be reluctant to pay the £2 million Portsmouth want for James but could come to some accommodation, possibly an exchange involving Carlo Cudicini. Redknapp rates James above Heurelho Gomes and Cudicini.
James has had a difficult last six months. He had a shoulder operation at the end of last season and struggled with a knee problem at the beginning of this campaign. He missed five games for England before being called into action following Rob Green’s sending off in Ukraine.
