Michael Dawson still believes Tottenham can turn their 2-0 Uefa Cup deficit to Shakhtar Donetsk around when the sides meet again next Thursday.

Spurs were beaten by two goals inside the last 10 minutes in Ukraine after Dawson had marshalled his much-changed backline well for the most part.

Dawson said: "I thought we did well in the first half and for the first half-hour of the second half -
but what happened at the end has cost us.

"We knew coming to a place like this they would have a lot of the ball but we're disappointed. It's going to be an uphill task - but we still believe we can do it."

Dawson lined up alongside youngster Chris Gunter at right back and with Tom Huddlestone as a makeshift centre-back partner, while there were a host of other changes as well as Spurs boss Harry Redknapp kept the league meeting with Hull and Carling Cup final against Manchester United in mind.

"Look at the players who've come in, we had a great team out there and believed we could come here and win,” said Dawson on Five.

"But we know how good we are at home and we'll have to take the game to them."

Redknapp said that he thought his side had done enough to take a goalless draw before they conceded late on.

Redknapp said: "I felt if we could stay in the game for 60-70 minutes we could push on for the last 15 or so.

"I couldn't see them scoring and thought they had run out of ideas but we gave a silly free-kick away and were punished. That's how it goes.

"It won't be easy now - the game is a couple of days before a cup final at Wembley against Manchester United.

"What sort of team am I going to put out? It's going to be a very young team but if they come in like (Dean) Parrett tonight it'll be a good experience.

"We'll have a good go but they are a seasoned Champions League team.

"I felt we contained them easily tonight but to pull a two-goal deficit back isn't going to be easy."

I hope so. Because if we lose the League Cup final, and just have the relegation scrap, the rest of this season will be even more depressing than it's been already.

A European campaign makes a season more exciting, I will be sorry if we go out, having not committed the required effort

Agreed '61 . He's spent a managerial life with teams without much European ambition and can't adjust in his 60s , to a bigger club with bigger ideas . Avoiding relegation and being out of Europe next year will not be seen as a triumph here at Spurs...at Pompey/Saints, maybe . Can Harry get his head round that ?

Can't see us going through to be honest & think they will score at the lane,we were pretty awful last night & dreading the rest of the season with this run we're currently on:cry:

I'd fancy us to turn it round with our first team. But we wont play key players a few days before the final. Palacios will probably play because he's Carling Cup tied. But other than that, i cant think of any key players coming into the side. We beat Zagreb well enough, and Shaktar are on a similar level, so it is possible. But i just cant see us fielding a strong enough team to turn it round.

I dont care what anyone says.. to me.. this cup is purely a luxury and doesnt really mean too much. We have no devine right to stay in the Premier league.. we've been in and out of the bottom 3 for too long that we cannot take any gambles, and if that means losing out on the UEFA cup so be it.

I love winning as much as the next man, but I feel we are taking staying the premier league as a dead cert.

We have some great players in the squad now, im confident if we are not in the UEFA next year... we should easily qualify the next. Its just not a massive loss considering our circumstances.

We're not going to turn it around with that sorry state of team that lost last night! Forget about it. The only thing that matters is staying up.

Why didn't he play Tarrabt? Why didn't he start Bent? Who is David Bentley? Parrett, what was the point?
  7. WIDEMAN3
    David Bentley - WTF?

Please someone - anyone - take a moment of your time to explain David Bentley to me. He has done one good thing all season: score at the Emirates. Apart from that, he has not taken a single effective free kick, his crosses are appalling - and his corners! I can't even bring myself to discuss his corners. Long, slow, deep, floating in the air so long that opposition defences have time for a cuppa before they need to organise themselves.

Some people can't stand Jenas. But Jenas has at least had some genuinely golden moments in a Spurs shirt. He has won matches for us and scored a few goals. But Bentley. Bentley. Bentley. Help me to understand the point of him - please - someone.

Hey....wake up pal....you and people like you are the problem with the fans at this club. I mean how self-righteous can one fan possibly sound...it's almost cringeworthy...this aint Bill Nic's spurs anymore ya know....we're WAY past that.

I'll tell you what will be a fuckin triumph this year, not being in the championship next year.....end of story. When are you gonna realise that this season is a write off. Sure if we can manage to somehow beat Man Utd in the league cup then fine and yeah, if we turn around this tie and get to the semi's or final of Uefa cup then la dee dah but should all that happen and then we get relegated....which is VERY, VERY possible....that what will any of the above matter one inch?? hhmm?? It won't....so get ur fuckin head on and pay attention....europe doesn't matter.

    Un-fuckin-believable.

agree with the guys above, staying in the premiership is our priority otherwise we can forget about good cup runs and playing in europe cos the club will be financially crippled.

we are resigned to rotation and it is compounded by our current situation. if the management before had registered more players and we had bought some decent replacements in the summer we wouldnt be in this mess.

harry is doing the best he can with what he has got. i'm damn sure he doesnt want to lose any game and i'm also sure that levy's brief to harry when he bought him in was keep us up - priority number 1.

this idea that we can play our best team all the time is short sighted and again compounded by injuries and ineligable players make the situation even worse.

harry isn't the source for rotation or our current circumstance it is the board and management before he got here.

exactly the narrow small minded thinking that will result in THFC becoming like Middlesborough, P'smouth or Wigan and just happy to stay in the division.

Give me the high expectation supporters any day as that is the only way we have any chance of realising any success, the minute we collectively lower our sights we become just another mediocre club not just a club having a poor season....... like it or not this is a club with a great heritage which demands we compete in all competitions. Think you might be better off at Fratton park - less for you to worry about there
  12. Boony
Firstly two of the three clubs you mentioned are above us after 25 games. Its fickle fans like you who put pressure on the club to make all the silly changes we make every 5 minutes, new players, new managers and rush for success. Its proven in every top club that stabilty and consistency is the key.

We are not saying we dont want success.. we are calling just this season a write off. Harry has bought in some new players, the squad is looking good, but staying in the prem has to be our priority, anything else is a bonus !

Jesus take a look at the league table :bang:
  13. Arjuanchivas
Avoiding the championship a triumph??? From what planet did you come??? How much did we spent on players at the beginning of the season and in january??? LOADS AND LOADS AND LOADS AND LOADS... hardly any other club can match that.. not even the topclubs abroad!!!!!!!!!!!

And with all we invested avoiding the championship would be a triumph??????????????????

What is this world coming to.. some fans are losing it... dear o dear..
  14. Arjuanchivas
Also.. maybe winning in Europe can give the players a moral boost and sefl confidence (That is now lacking)?????? Ever thought of that???

No of course not.. let´s give bollocks about Europe and lose without any effort or intention to win..

Yeah that will help us in the relegation battle.. go down instead of staying up!!!
  15. DC_Boy
we must be about 10/1 to go through -

we'll be playing an even more inexperienced team next Thurs

no jj or zokora I reckon and unless King is fit surely no Daws either

actually even if King is fit I wouldn't risk Daws on thurs

Jansson - Gunter Chimbo Hudd Bale - Bentley Parrett Bostock Gio - Campbell Obika

if O'Hara is fit - start him

somethng like that would be my choice

maybe Gomes - but I'd like to see Oscar get his chance and claim the Wembley bench spot
