Roman Pavlyuchenko and Fraizer Campbell took full advantage of their starting berths with two goals each in our 4-2 Carling Cup fourth round victory over Liverpool at The Lane.

Russian international Roman returned to haunt the side he scored a last minute winner against in the league 10 days ago, while Fraizer netted his first goals for the Club since a loan move from Manchester United.

Damien Plessis and Sami Hyypia struck for the visitors in the first half, but our fifth win out of six in all competitions maintained Harry Redknapp's unbeaten start as Spurs manager and sent us through to the quarter-finals.

There were no less than seven changes to the side which defeated Manchester City in the league on Sunday.

Michael Dawson came into the centre of defence as skipper, with Alan Hutton and Gareth Bale in either full-back position.

Tom Huddlestone and Didier Zokora retained their places in central midfield with Aaron Lennon and Jamie O'Hara coming in to occupy the wings.

A break from the league programme also gave Redknapp the chance to experiment with two up-front for a change.

And Pavlyuchenko and Campbell relished the chance to prove themselves as the free-scoring Darren Bent was rested on the bench to start with.

From the start, the pair were causing trouble to the visiting backline. Pavlyuchenko rose but just failed to connect properly with Lennon's early cross, while Campbell was just out of reach having chased down Huddlestone's throughball on six minutes.

Lennon himself had a shot well blocked by Daniel Agger on 19 minutes, and from the resulting corner, Pavlyuchenko again couldn't get enough purchase on a header to trouble Diego Cavalieri.

But we were the dominant side and it seemed only a matter of time before we broke the deadlock. The opener came on 38 minutes and it was Pavlyuchenko who scored it.

Bale played a ball down the left hand side which Campbell chased and dragged back from the by-line for the Russian to sweep home left-footed through the goalkeeper's legs.

Full credit must go to Campbell for holding off the experienced Hyypia to get the ball in, and it summed up how the England Under-21 international's night was going.

A minute later, he was nearly the provider again, playing in O'Hara through the middle only for the midfielder's first time shot to be saved.
But Campbell wanted his name on the scoresheet, and as Cavalieri misjudged O'Hara's high ball on 42 minutes, he stole in to take it round the stranded Brazilian and tap home into an empty net.

It is fair to say few players have enjoyed their first goal for a club more than young Fraizer as he celebrated with the fans - and he wasn't finished there.

On the stroke of half-time, he got on the end of Lennon's curling cross and buried a header home to give us a comfortable half-time lead.
But Liverpool were determined not to go out without a fight and scored twice in the second half to reduce the deficit.

Their first came just four minutes after the break when Plessis' header from six yards out after Ryan Babel's corner wrong-footed Heurelho Gomes and sneaked over the line.

And on 64 minutes, Hyypia got to another Babel corner in-front of the on-rushing Gomes to head home into an empty net.

But in between these goals, Pavlyuchenko had netted our fourth to ensure there were not too many second half nerves.

O'Hara dispossessed Plessis in the middle of the park, and Zokora drove into the box and hit a deflected shot which fell into the path of the Russian who tapped home.

Pavlyuchenko could have had a hat-trick 10 minutes from time when he latched onto a Huddlestone throughball and hit a fierce shot that was beaten away by Cavalieri.

However, the night did have its sour note as Gomes was stretchered off with a head injury after a second half collision with Philipp Degen.
We will keep you updated on his progress.

But the main point from the night is another impressive victory as we continue our defence of the cup, and a bit of history as the win means Redknapp has made the best start to a managerial reign at the Club since Frank Brettell 110 years ago!

Spurs (4-4-2): Gomes (Cesar, 74); Hutton, Dawson, Corluka, Bale; Lennon, Zokora, Huddlestone, O'Hara; Campbell (Bent, 90), Pavlyuchenko (Boateng, 90)
Subs not used: Bentley, Modric, Gunter, Rocha

Liverpool (4-4-2): Cavalieri; Degen (Darby, 85), Agger, Hyypia, Dossena; El Zhar, Plessis (Alonso, 66), Leiva, Babel; N'Gog, Torres (Insua, 56)

I know this was not their first team, but you can only beat what is put in front of you. Well done boys, this performance has gone a long way to a corner being turned.
  2. paulw001
Bent, Pav and Campbell... who would have picked that as a tripple threat strick force (with other supporting goals). Amazing.

And as has been said, yes they made 11 changes, but we made 7 (it should have been 8 ) so it was practically our 2nd string too - althought its nice to see that our 2nd string also reads close to the 1st team. And yes you can only beat whats infront of you... would have been weird if we'd beaten Chelsea today

Lets not forget, it was not our first team either.

We didnt have King, Woodgate, Jenas, Modric, Bentley or Bent. 6 of our best starting XI.

Harry says we had 7 changes in our team tonight, and we started without our top scorer......I'm very pleased with the team tonight, and don't want to hear about Liverpool fielding a weakened side, that was up to them!
  6. brakefluid
Who gives a crap if its their 2nd string, we put 4 past the scousers!! We won!! And thats all that matters :D

Can't bloody stop grinning this past 3 weeks haha
  7. Don_Felipe
Who cares... we beat their first team the other week anyway... keep trying lads (maybe they need to bring the ladies...)

Barring Gomes not dealing with two corners it was a fine team performance. The workrate which set the platform for the win was phenomenal.

This 'weakened' Liverpool team included numerous international players. It ain't our problem they were out fought.

Hope he recovers quickly but ffs what is it with us and goalkeepers..........miss the safe hands of Cerny

Good performance by all bar Gomes, could have been a lot more if Lennon, Bale and O'Hara had any type of consistency with their delivery especially in the 1st half

Oh and it wasnt a penalty......well done Riley- at last

A lot more + than - To come out of that game for sure? What ever Harry's doing long may it continue...............We will lose a game or two..I'm ready for that...But tonight i can sleep safely in the knowledge..we are going to be OK!

Yeah, i agree this guy Gomes is a banana..... as you , i hope he`s not badly hurt. Where is Ben Alnwick ? has he been sold or what?

What an incredible change 'arry has brought about since he was installed as our manager, some 20 days ago.
I know we're still knee hire in the mire, but at least now we have hope. Hope in the league, plus the 3 cups we're still in. Hope that, just perhaps, we can continue this fabulous roll until the end of November, maybe December even, who knows.
All I know is that after Martin Jol bringing the joy back, for me at least, in watching Spurs again after sooooo many years of mediocrity dear 'arry has definitely brought back the magic, albeit it for only a month or so, of the high that I used to get watching the Spurs in the 60's and 70's.
Move over Dumbledore, there's a new wizard in town and he goes by the name of 'arry The Twitch.........just love the man

My mate's a Liverpool fan and had a bet with me. He kept bleating on about it being a second string before I knew our team, but my point aftewards was, we beat the side they put out, if they chose to field a 1st team, 2nd team or girls under 11's, too bad, Rafa made his selection, he chose wrong!! Lets not be fooled by them into thinking they were a bunch of amateurs, they still fielded a whole host of full internationals.
    Well done boys, great result.
  15. theoldguy
What impressed me most was how everyone came out running and playing quality football. Loved Tommy Thudd's deft passing and also enjoyed Michael Dawson's return to the form of, what, two years ago? And Frasier Campbell may not be the biggest guy around but boy is he spunky and hard to get off the ball when he has it. A victory to be savoured.

cilla black, ringo starr, kerry katona, roy evans!! steven gerrard!! can u hear me!! your boys took a hell of a beating!!!! lol coys!! so happy for pav!!
  17. spursintheblood
Not that I don't value our foreign imports, I really do, Pav for instance was brilliant and Modric is something special, but there is something that gives me a little pride in the fact that so many of the players were British tonight. For some reason Redknapp is a genius at getting players to believe. We've been lucky recently, very at times, but the results have gone our way and engendered a confidence into the team that is leading them to play with flair and guile I have not seem for a long time. There is a passion there I have not seen since the Cup final.

We dominated Liverpool. Utterly trounced them. Harry deserves every penny he gets if we keep this kind of form up.

Twice in the space of two weeks we have humbled the league leaders!!! Let the rest of the Premier League sit up and take notice..THE SPURS ARE ON THEIR WAY TO GLORY!!!

Twice, Arsenal have been belittled, twice Liverpool have been shamed, twice Chelsea
have been made to eat dust...bring on Manure, we'll rub their faces in it too...especially that Berba' face!
  19. oultima
I just wanna say how much i appreciate the job of our guys, get in there!

Early in the season, we were written off when the sulken berb & midget keane left, and was said our strike force won't be able to cope without the 2. We have prove all doubters wrong, it all boils down to confidence, now we have 3 proven strikers completing which is fantastic:)

On a note to point out, Juande Ramos made the worst start as our manager in 100 years and now Redknapp made the best start as our manager in 100 years!!

Ramos, get some hidding while your in spain and thanks for the effort!!:shake:
