Personally I dont think his signing really effected Yedlin's place much anyway. He's been playing pretty well at RB for them since Big Sam brought him back into the team, IMO. If nothing else, he is proving to have value as a PL RB next season. We could probably sell him to a lower mid-bottom table club for a profit this summer at least.

Why DeAndre Yedlin's blossoming at Sunderland after overcoming lack of experience

Sam Allardyce believes on-loan Spurs defender DeAndre Yedlin has proved himself a quality Premier League performer in recent months

DeAndre Yedlin is blossoming into a fully-fledged Premier League player at Sunderland, says Sam Allardyce.

Big Sam was worried about the on-loan Spurs right-back’s lack of experience, with the USA international having had only 11 minutes of English football to his name before he arrived on Wearside as cover for Billy Jones last summer.

And he had made little more than a handful of league starts up to the turn of the year, with Allardyce looking to recruit another right-back in the January transfer window leading to talk that Sunderland could even cut short Yedlin’s loan deal.

Allardyce was unable to bring in a right-back in the window, but he did later sign free agent Emmanuel Eboue - although that move has now turned sour, and the ex-Arsenal man is set to be sacked this week after it emerged he is serving a year-long FIFA ban.

But Allardyce is relaxed about Eboue’s impending departure, because Yedlin has since proved he can perform at this level after replacing the injured Jones in February and then retaining his place for the last six games on merit despite Jones returning to fitness.

“I have to say something on DeAndre who seems to have managed the situation as a young player in the Premier League for the first time, much, much better recently,” said Allardyce.

“Whether that’s because there’s better players around him and they’re helping him a bit more, I’ve been really pleased with his performances at right-back.

“Hopefully he’ll maintain those.

“As a young man of his age, you’ve got to look at the mistakes, look at your whole game and learn from them.

“He’s had a lot to take in and learn in a short period of time after coming from the States to the Premier League.

“But all the tools are there to help him. And it seems like he’s doing a job.”

Yedlin spoke last week about the work Allardyce has done with him to improve the defensive side of his game, but Big Sam also sees him as an attacking asset in much the same vein as left-back Patrick van Aanholt on the opposite flank.

He said of Yedlin: “Going forward, I like him. He’s got pace, he can take a player on.

“Perhaps his final ball needs to get a bit better, but he’s getting better”

Yedlin seems alot more solid at the back than Jones ever did. Highly doubt he'll get a chance here unless he blows Poch in pre season but at least we should be able to turn a nice profit off him by selling him to a team lower in the table or to a newly promoted team

I guess give him another pre-season with us to continue working with him and improving him while we search for another loan/sale.

I agree he doesn't seem to have a place here right now.

Yep. KWP is ready for some first team football and we have Trippier and Walker. Sell Yedlin, loan KWP to get regular games then see where we're at next summer. Wouldnt be surprised if KWP is our starting RB by the time we get to the new stadium in 2 years. That kid is going to be a star.

Ideal scenario is Sunderland stay up and he gets another full season there (on loan). I think we'll be in a better position to make a decision on his future this time next year.

IMO Yedlin had a very good game against Arsenal, was well involved in everything, Not only defensively, but also offensively. Looked like a good Pl player. Most importantly, Arsenal dropped two points, and tbh they looked shitty and bored. Özil was especially shit, which was nice. Is Yedlin good enough for Spurs? I dont know, we are pretty well stacked atm.. But I think we should definitely keep him, and give him a Pl loan. Perhaps some counter attack playing team would be a good choice, his pace is unreal and is a nightmare for defenders. Hopefully he can cause some problems to our rivals in next season also.

Tottenham Hotspur loanee DeAndre Yedlin impresses in Sunderland's draw with Arsenal

DeAndre Yedlin enjoyed another solid defensive display for Sunderland on Sunday afternoon as they boosted their survival hopes with a 0-0 draw at home to Arsenal.

The US international, who is on a season-long loan from Tottenham Hotspur, was making his ninth straight start at right-back for Sam Allardyce's side and showcased his recent progress by playing a key role in preserving the clean sheet.

As well as doing an excellent job of limiting the impact of Alex Iwobi and Nacho Monreal in the final third, the 31-times capped American made a crucial clearance off the line in the first half after a goalmouth scramble, before coming to the rescue once again in the closing stages with a great block to help secure his side a point that moves them out of the Premier League’s bottom three.

In total, the Tottenham loanee made two blocks, one tackle, two clearances, two interceptions, four ball recoveries and won three duels over the course of the 90 minutes, while also completing 21 of his 26 passes – four of which were long balls.

He did not really get a chance to showcase his attacking skills, meanwhile, recording only one key pass, three crosses which failed to find a target and one dribble, but that comes as little surprise given the job he was asked to do.

Having continually faced questions about his defence since his days in MLS with the Seattle Sounders, performances like the one against Arsenal serve as an encouraging sign for the promising speedster’s development, but what the long-term future holds for him remains to be seen.

He has seemingly proved at this point that he can be perfectly solid full-back at the Premier League level – despite past suggestions that he would be better served moving to midfield – but he has a tough task on his hands to earn minutes at that position back at Tottenham given the other options available to Mauricio Pochettino.

Thought he looked decent today. He didn't seem massively tested defensively though. Technically, he looked comfortable on the ball and used it well. I doubt we will keep him but if he keeps this form up we should get a decent fee for him from a another club.

Will be a choice between him and Trippier in the summer. I like Trippier, but I'm inclined to think Yedlin is the better bet long term. This summer he turns 23, while Trippier is 26 in September, and is a more like for like player with Walker which means more consistency in our system. I like Trippier and think technically he has a lot going for him, but Yedlin to me looks a player more likely to push Walker for a starting place long term. Also, with Walker-Peters still only just 19, it won't be a particular blockade to his development.

My best is that the one who stays is the one with lower resale value. Trippier is English and at this point, better, but Yedlin has more potential and is a full international for a fast growing football market.

We opened the door to the PL for him and he'll still be in it at his next club imo. He'll grow and have a decent career in the prem. Good luck to 'im.

Think KWP could be good enough and physically mature enough to get minutes off the bench next season, and become alternate full back within 2 seasons.

Long term KWP looks to have far more potential that Yedlin, and as Yedlin will not be as good as Trippier at the start of next season, think it'll probably make sense to move Yedlin on in next TW so as to leave space for KWP to develop.

Yedlin's still get some learning to do so the other alternative is to loan him out to another PL side next season - but think its in his interest to move permanently if a good PL move comes along
