Sunderland is likely staying up and DeAndre Yedlin is a big reason why

@JeremiahOshan on May 7, 2016,

DeAndre Yedlin's move to England has not gone exactly as expected. The Seattle native has made just one senior team appearance for Tottenham Hotspur -- the team who paid a $3 million transfer fee to the Sounders -- and has been on loan to relegation battlers Sunderland all this season.

But it hasn't been all bad, as Yedlin has recently established himself as Sunderland's starting right back. In the Sunderland's last seven games -- all Yedlin starts -- the Black Cats have gone 2-1-4 and now only need a win in one of their final two games to guarantee safety. In fact, Sunderland has lost just one of Yedlin's last nine starts and allowed just nine goals, nearly a goal less per game than they had been averaging otherwise.

Yedlin's contribution was especially stark in their most recent win, 3-2 over Chelsea. With the score tied 2-2 in the 70th minute, it was Yedlin who dodged a tackle, pushed toward the endline and put in a cross that found its way to Jermaine Defoe. Although Yedlin wasn't credited with an assist, he was the driving force behind the goal (his pass is on the second of the two goals linked below).

Yedlin still gets caught out of position at times and he's still not contributing on offense as regularly as you might assume given his tool set, but he's showing dramatic improvement and has apparently won the trust of Sunderland manager Sam Allardyce. It's unclear what will happen after this loan spell lapses, but his move to England is looking a lot better than it did as recently as a few months ago.

4:03 to see Ydelin skip past a Chelski player as if he was made of air...

It's not quite Danny Rose's loan spell at Sunderland, but this was a loan that certainly panned out to be the best move for both the player and the loaning club. Rare that happens, especially for us.

I think Big Sam was probably the best thing to ever happen to Yedlin. He's been fairly solid at the back since Big Sam took over.

£2m would be an absolute steal for any Premier League club to buy their own first-choice right-back, as it were.

From ESPN.com on today's game against Puerto Rico:

DF DeAndre Yedlin, 9 -- Went up and down the right flank with impunity and created more dangerous moments for the USMNT than any other player. Improved defending was also on display.

I have a feeling he is going to find a home here next season. He has improved at every stop he has made in his career, so we will see if he has enough to challenge Trippier for a spot.

Another review:

DeAndre Yedelin – RB: 7
Played in position at right back and had one of his best games in a national team uniform. Go figure. Solid on defense and whipped in a number of dangerous crosses.

I think if Yedlin plays well defensively at Copa America, there is a chance he replaces Trippier - albeit a small chance.

The both played RB at clubs that were involved in a relegation battle - and Yedlin managed to stay up. I know Trippier has a number of supporters here, but I think he'll get some competition from Yedlin, and no matter how it turns out - its good for Spurs.

I could also see Yedlin going out on loan again, and then coming back a year from now, assuming it is a successful loan. Its hard to imagine Spurs selling Yedlin at this point - even if they brought him in primarily as a marketing ploy.
