Was everyone this up in arms when Zaha decided that he longer wanted to play for England?

He didn't play a senior game for England. How can people not understand this is the gripe we have with the this **** Rice?

Although McClean didn't play for NI's senior team, he represented NI at various levels including U-21. If he doesn't identify with Northern Ireland at all (and I'm not disputing his right to his opinions), why did he play for NI at any level? Those teams all represent the same place and the same football association/system.
Another point. Let's just imagine that Rice were half-Irish and half-Welsh or half-Scottish instead of being half-Irish and half-English, and he'd been born and bred in Wales or Scotland. He plays a few friendlies for Ireland before deciding to play for Wales or Scotland, would McClean be having a go at Rice then? Or is McClean allowing his Anglophobia to show?
Or are you showing your McCleanophobia? He clearly does identify with Northern Ireland, he just disputes who rules it. A situation more unique than Rice’s I’d suggest. But that’s a whole other thing.

The Zaha thing is different too. England have a bigger and higher quality pool of players to choose from. Losing the likes of Rice, Grealish and even Michael Keane are huge blows to an already crippled side. That said, I actually enjoyed our game last night and am fully behind those who wear the green proudly.

You can't really blame him, guess it sucks from a ROI point of view but I'm quite sure most of us would have did the same thing if they were in his position.

McClean admitted he played the system for his benefit when he was younger. Difference is he turned down the chance to play for N. Ireland senior team because, as he said, it's not his country. Rice claimed to be a proud Irishmen and was happy to put on the Ireland shirt until England came calling. Is he no longer a proud Irishman? Was he ever?

As for you're second point, I imagine he'd have the same opinion, but no one would ask him about it.

I do blame him. He's a fucking fanny.

I hope England come over here to play. And I hope he comes and plays too because he'll have 7 shades kicked out of him.

I think the rules should be revised. I understand how U-21 and below shouldn’t count, especially when you have young foreign players or players who were born and raised in countries a long way from where the place they identify with. I remember BAE saying how so many French-African players simply didn’t feel at all French.

But when you get that call-up to senior level, that should be your moment to commit one way or another. It’s tricky, because on one hand you might be 18 and thinking it’s your best possibility of international football, and on the other hand you might develop and realise that you have a shot at your preferred option.

Either way, once you’ve committed to senior level, you should stay committed. Being brought into a senior international side is a huge honour, and means that they consider you to be someone they can potentially rely on and maybe build a team around. Shouldn’t matter if it’s a friendly or not. Those games are prep for competitive games, and therefore still tactically significant.

Would be amusing to see what happened if he scored a winning goal their. :barefoot::sneaky::X3:

I heard somewhere that the night Rice made his debut for England it meant there were four England players in the squad who could have played for Ireland by direct descent.
