    RUMOURS:

The race is on to land West Brom's highly-rated defender Curtis Davies with Spurs, Portsmouth, Aston Villa and Arsenal all in the hunt.

    Source: Eatsleepsport

The much sought after defender has been linked with a move from the Hawthorns in January but with so much interest the chances of landing him on the cheap look to be nil.

Spurs are said to be considering a player plus cash offer to try and land Davies who is rated at around £8m to £10m and Martin Jol is said to be ready to offer £5m plus Calum Davenport when the transfer window opens in January.

West Brom turned down some major bids for the player over the summer and with a swift return to the Premiership still possible they will be very reluctant to sell in the middle of the season unless someone comes up with an offer that they find impossible to turn down.

As I said before, the competition is going to be too big for qaulity players in this window, and don`t rule out Chelsea from being interested.

Just don't see this. At this sort of money he would have to come as a first choice regular. With the Prem's best young central defensive partnership already at the club this would only complicate things. And yes I know all about squad strength etc. With the progress already being made I wouldn't mind a quiet Jan this time.

Apparently Albion, who may have to sell in this transfer window, are lining up Brighton's 19 year-old Joel Lynch as a replacement: any good? And should we be thinking of him to join the Huddlestone-captained Spurs of the future?

I can't imagine offering Davenport as part exchange, unless he specifically wants to leave for first team football. I feel he has come on in the past three months and see him as a superb back up for Dawson and King.

i totally agree with u about us having the the best young pairing at centre back and that its a lot to pay for a guy who wont be 1st choice even though people will say he will get a lot of games.

I have to say though i hope its not a quiet january for us, i always think its good to freshen things up a bit, if we can continue playing as we are at the moment then the new faces could be benched until they are needed or have learnt the tottenham way of playing and learnt to adapt. Van Der Vaart would be nice!! we have a few outstanding players and quite a lot of quality players, now is the time to add more top quality to it with also a few young uns for the future.

i have to disagree (with your second point, that is). i think one of the main reasons we started so slowly this year was because the players needed time to get to know each other and thier games. adding more faces, to me, seems unnecessary unless it's going to be a left winger.

i truely believe our squad is big and deep enough at the moment and any more additions will rock the boat. if you look at the current squad, we do have good cover for all positions other than the left wing - because we don't have one.

look how well davenport and gardner have done when called upon. the only way they'll improve is by getting match experience. there's no use bringing in a load of new players, as the youngsters will just end up in hull.

While I wouldn't want to see Davenport on his way, I reckon Ledders really needs an operation and he will wilt under the toll of matches eventually. Davies would be a great addition.

A bit short sighted dont you think? A quiet Jan? Why not go all the way and say a quiet rest of the season.

THFC are in a very good position in all competitions and with the number of games to be played, King playing through the pain barrier, we need adequate cover. If it takes 10mill so be it....a small price to pay for success.

    Still want a quiet Jan?
  9. Laudrup
    Absolutely right, mate!
  10. vigospur
My point about a quiet Jan is that big money arrivals are just as likely to disrupt progress - at least for a couple of weeks. Surely the summer is the time for squad strenthening. Unless of course there is a one-off chance to get a long term target. Either way it's only a personal view. Very happy that MJ knows best.

What a strange post... the rest of the season's always quiet cos there's no transfer window. You're right about getting back-up, but any price..? Come on mate, we're not desperate. And lastly, if we only sign one player that will be a quiet January...!
  12. sloth
I think what a lot of people are forgetting is King's carrying an injury, he deperately needs an op and Davenport isn't adequate cover for King.

Davenport is superb cover for Dawson, neither are particularly mobile, nor the most cultured passers of the ball, but they're both comabative, fantastic in the air and good at attacking the first ball. You watch who attacks and who covers out of Ledley and Daws, watch between Ledley and Callum. Nine times out of ten Ledley is the one picking up the pieces.

Curtis Davies is made out of the same mould as Ledley that's why we want/need him.

The money being banded around for him is crazy. He is only likely to be cover as i can't see King and Dawson not still being first choice. I'd stick to what we've got, we have got a few young kids in the reserves that could make the grade in the not to distant future dervitte and Mills for example. Really don't see the need to be spending big on a centre half.
  14. Captain Spur
I know what your saying with King i suppose i keep hoping he lasts the season and can get looked at after it. I keep thinking it is a lot of money to spend on a player who might only cover King for a few games.
  15. sloth
Yeah, I don't think we should go after him at any price, maybe 5 mil and Gardner?? Or a bit more and chuck Dervitte as a loanee into the deal?? Some sort of package beneficial to all anyway... if we can't do it though then fair enough we've still got Gardner and Davenport and maybe even Dervitte... a lot depends on the seriousness of Kings injury I suppose...
  16. Captain Spur
Yes i just think we could be spending a lot of money on a back up, when money could be better put elsewhere.
If we do go for him (i do rate him by the way), but i'd draw the line at 4mill, 5 at a max, but i wouldn't include anyone in a permanent deal. Do like the sound of a loan for Dervitte could be a real good experience for him.
I would want to then sell one of Davenport or Gardener (my choice would be Gardener for 1.5-2mill).
As i say though i'd rather we didn't at all.

I don't think the amount of money is the issue here. We are usually very shrewd in our transfer dealings. Have you noticed we rerely give details of the financial aspects of the deals we have been involved in recently? The club often releases statements where the fee is undisclosed, whereas other clubs issue exact amount paid (in loan or cash). This is because we aim to get the best deal for the club, and sets us apart from the likes of middlesboro and the bar codes, who spend big money on TF fees and wages to get their players. We on the other hand will only get a player if the financal deal is right for the club. Often adding on future payments not direct transfer fees. This protects the club against over priced players who may not amount to anything, and rewards clubs who have developed players who push on and meet their potential.

therefore the question is not how much, but do we need him? The answer for me is yes -at the right deal for the club (which would be a forgone conclusion given our recent transfer activity). We need cover for King, and offering Dervite as a rest of season loan would benifit all.

Have seen a lot of Gardner and he seems fine to me as a back-up centre half, apart from the odd aberration he was excellent last season and is just reaching the peak of his footballing ability in age terms. He is also very quick.

If he is willing to be a squad player then I see no reason to replace him at all. And not having seen very much of CD I'm not really in a position to make recommendations to BMJ about it.
And I suspect not many of you on here have REALLY seen alot of CD and of those who have, even less are qualified to make a serious judgement.....

If he's that good and the price/deal is right then I'm sure they'll bid. But I won't be cursing anyone if he doesn't sign....
  19. BTN1
Totally agree with those sentiments. This is not after all CM, and BMJ and the club know whats best, and if the deal is right then it will be if not no worries
